How many houses have you lived in?

quietheart · 16/05/2023 10:47

We were discussing my brothers new house this weekend, he is in his 50's and is just about to move into his 17th house, he has lived in a few different countries on 4 different continents.

By contrast my sister who is 60 has lived in 2, our childhood home and the one she bought with her DH when they married.

I'm the oldest and have lived in 8 houses but all within 30 miles of each other.

My brother has moved around for work and has certainly had more life adventures than me or my sister.

Just being nosey wondering how far others have moved from home, how many times and has it enhanced your life?

Our current place is future proofed, all doors are wide, flat entry and stairs can take a stair lift ... and crucially only 2 mins to pub and shops, you have to think of these things once you hit middle age Grin

Azealeasinbloom · 16/05/2023 11:01

18 - 3 in childhood, 7 we, or the bank , have owned, and the other 8 were flats/ lets that we stayed in while working abroad.
Have to say it’s given me a restless streak, but also the ability to settle pretty much anywhere

murasaki · 16/05/2023 11:01

2 childhood homes, 5 as an adult post university, and 3 rooms in College, if they count! As they were in the same building, I'd say 8 overall. Mid forties.

MadEyeMoodysEye · 16/05/2023 11:02

I'm 42 and lived in 14 houses/flats in my first 27 years (4 family homes and 10 rentals - a mix of alone, flatshares and with boyfriends. Various parts of London and a year in the West Country.

DH and I bought our current house (in London suburbs) as first time buyers 15 years ago and I can't see us moving again.

Inadvertentlyspring · 16/05/2023 11:03

Omg, 25 and I didn’t even think I was that transient. See my comment on other thread about serial renovating!

the killer is, I HATE packing! And moving!

Calzonepizza · 16/05/2023 11:05

11 but not including my time when working overseas and staying in properties for extended periods

FunnysInLaJardin · 16/05/2023 11:06

6 in 2 countries, 3 in various towns and villages in the UK and 3 in various villages abroad

peachespeachespeaches · 16/05/2023 11:12

2, I'm 35.

TheNoodlesIncident · 16/05/2023 11:13

My current one is the eighth.

First parents' house (extended new build), second parents' house (mature detached stone villa), third parents' house (4 bed semi), bedsit, rental (2 bed terrace), my first house (2 bed terrace), my second house (3 bed terrace), our house (3 bed semi).

First two in a different country. Second one I spent most of my childhood in and this house has featured as a location in my overnight dreams for years, so fair to say it left a strong impression on me.

My second house was the one DH came to live in together after we'd got married.

I bought my first house in 1998, a tiny two bed terrace, for £19,995. Sold it for £26,500 which meant I could buy the second one for £27,500. Crikey.

Spidey66 · 16/05/2023 11:14

9, including a couple of bedsits. I lived in 3 until I left home, all close to each other (council flat to owner occupied then larger house). Then after leaving home I lived in 2 nurses home bedsits, then a Housing Trust bedsit, then a room in a shared house. When I met my now husband I moved into his council flat and after a couple of years we'd saved up to buy. We've lived here since 1995, but are hoping to move to Somerset in the near future. I'm 56. So far I've only lived in various parts of NW/N London.

RoseBucket · 16/05/2023 11:14

I think about 11, how do people remember some of the larger amounts?

quietheart · 16/05/2023 11:14

Yes I should have said homes including flats etc

@Maggiesgirl that's a lot of moving, do you feel settled now or were you happy to be moving around so much?

For those who have lived in other countries do you have a preference, have you settled or would you choose one of the other countries to settle in. My brother has always come back to the UK and when he has lived here it's always been within 5 miles of our childhood home, he said he wouldn't settle anywhere else.

@2chocolateoranges just like my sister and she has no plans to move.

I hate packing, all of my moves since I left home have been working up the ladder otherwise I would have stayed put and my loft would have been falling in by now.

I had 2 childhood homes, though I was too young to remember the first. When I left home I moved into a flat, then into a two up two down terraced house, then a small semi, then a new build semi, then a detached and finally into this home which has been our main family home for the last 20 years. Quite boring compared to some people.

13 - being a student and then a junior doctor pushed the numbers up.

CharlottenBurger · 16/05/2023 11:16

17 rented places in 2 cities, London and Bristol, from age 19 to age 44, 1 owned since then; still there.

checktoolate · 16/05/2023 11:19

15 - ( but I did count three years at a boarding school as a "house". 4 different countries. Am 33.

TwoBlueFish · 16/05/2023 11:21

At least 23 and I’m early 50’s and have lived in my current house for 15 years.

quietheart · 16/05/2023 11:22

@TheNoodlesIncident ah yes houses could be bought for as little as an annual wage those days or less than a joint salary. I'm sure when I was first looking at mortgages they said the maximum we could borrow was the equivalent of one times the largest salary plus half the other.

6
2 childhood homes
Halls of residence
Student flat
Forever home
We then lived with in laws for 7 months while our house had major repairs done to it and then back home again.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 16/05/2023 11:29

13, I'm in my 50s

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 11:30

18 including halls of residence and uni flats

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 16/05/2023 11:31

I'm 34.

4th house. I hate moving.

Lcb123 · 16/05/2023 11:31

About 15, I’m early 30s. And that doesn’t include flat shares and house sitting whilst travelling. I think that’s quite normal

Xanadu58 · 16/05/2023 11:32

9 . I'm 55

Herecomesthemoon · 16/05/2023 11:32

8 homes and I'm in my 60s. 4 with my parents and 4 as an adult. The first move was several hundred miles and all the others within 10 miles.

Lengokengo · 16/05/2023 11:32

I am early 50s and it’s 21, over 4 different countries. Have been in the last one for just over 8 years and can’t see that we will move again ( I will but suspect DH never would want to)

One siblings number is 14 but only in 1 country. Other sibling is similar to mine, eg approx 20 over 4 countries, but 3different countries to mine!

Interesting question!
