How many houses have you lived in?

We were discussing my brothers new house this weekend, he is in his 50's and is just about to move into his 17th house, he has lived in a few different countries on 4 different continents.

By contrast my sister who is 60 has lived in 2, our childhood home and the one she bought with her DH when they married.

I'm the oldest and have lived in 8 houses but all within 30 miles of each other.

My brother has moved around for work and has certainly had more life adventures than me or my sister.

Just being nosey wondering how far others have moved from home, how many times and has it enhanced your life?

I’m in my 15th house at 43.

Doing this one up and will move again in the next couple of years to a different area.

I’ve lived in lots of different places around the country even as a child, although a few of those moves were when we were renting in the same area - landlords sold up on us 4 times in 8 years.

I like moving and living in different places. My children are happy with it (youngest is only 2, but the 9 year old moved across the country at 7, and my 21 year old has lived in three different parts of the county with me now. They are all very easy going and are the sort of children that are really confident and fit in anywhere, which makes it easier).

My inlaws are the sort of family who have always lived in the same place. They are in their 70s and live in the house they bought in their 20s when they moved out of their parents houses, who did the same. SIL lives across the road from them in the house she bought when she moved out of home in her early 20s and will never leave it.

Dh caused huge upset when he up and left at 20 and moved 120 miles away and continued to try out new places. No one in his family does that, and so many people in the area he’s from are the same.

Different strokes and all that, but I would feel so constricted staying in one place my whole life.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 16/05/2023 11:53

I’m in my 40’s and I’ve lived in more than 30 different homes. I tried to count and gave up at 30.

DH stopped counting at 25.

I’m stunned at the number of people who are saying 2 or 3 (and slightly envious too).

ADHDat43 · 16/05/2023 11:53

When I was a few months old, parents moved house.

About 14 years old, we had to move out for a few months cos of some renovations, moved into one of the houses my parents usually had rented out.
Then they moved again when I was about 20. I lived there with them while at university.

Then moved into my own house about 24. And just moved into a new house last year.

While at uni, university accommodation. 1st year.
Then moved twice into different student t houses.

Had a resit year.

Then moved into a house initially during the summer holidays but it didn't work out so moved again come September, was only in the original house for a couple of weeks.
During initial university years,. Had some.placements for a few months so stayed at 2 separate hospital accommodations.

Last year had placements in different part of country, so again stayed at 2 different hospital accommodation.
Once qualified first few weeks, stayed in a different hospital accommodation.

Then next couple of years stayed in 2 different houses with work mates,.while having parents house as main address.

I'm in my 30s and honestly don't know off top of my head how many houses I've lived in! Would have to sit down and write them down. My guess would be 20+.

KnittedCardi · 16/05/2023 11:59

3 as a child with parents
4 as an adult with DH

All in the same 20 mile radius 😱

TomatoSandwiches · 16/05/2023 12:00

38 and I'm not quite 40 yet.

SaraSS · 16/05/2023 12:01

7 houses in childhood, then as an adult, 13.
My home now is with my partner and we've been here 2 years and plan to stay put!!
I'm 32.
I've moved a fair amount due to renting and changes in rental costs/ landlord selling etc. Rarely through my own choice. I'm only on my second home that I've purchased so that's not many IMO

frozendaisy · 16/05/2023 12:02

DogInATent · 16/05/2023 12:05

4 in childhood
4 or 5 as a student - mixture of digs and flats
4 as an adult - inc. 2 short-term rentals

ChickenBurgers · 16/05/2023 12:06

28, 8 houses. Hoping to be be moving on to number 9 this year. All local to where I was born.

WorriedMillie · 16/05/2023 12:09

I’d lived in 2 houses before we moved to what I call my childhood home, aged 3. Lived there until uni
After uni, I lived in the city centre in a flat for a year, then moved in with OH and lived in his flat for 3 years ish
Then we bought our first house, lived there for 3 ish years
Since then, we’ve lived in our current house, no immediate plans to move, but plan to downsize when we retire and buy a smaller place and a camper van!

quietheart · 16/05/2023 12:11

@Dwightlovesmichael There are families that live close like that aren't there with the odd one that moves on. I suppose we are a bit like that and my brother is the wanderer, not that anyone minded. Three of my uncles moved countries for work and they seem to have lived full and enriched lives. I have heard that children who move a lot are confident and independent because they learn to resettle and make new friends. I don't know how true that is.

@DifficultBloodyWoman have those moves been through choice for example work or better lifestyle? I read of many people having to move often because they can't secure housing and I think the state of UK housing is a disgrace.
