Kruger- immigrant parents. Braverman - immigrant parents. Patel - immigrant parents. I guess we should feel ashamed we haven't come up to scratch as a country and glad we've got them to point out our shortcomings. And MN, it's not xenophobic to comment about incipient arising fascism yet I expect this post to be deleted.

I wonder where all the posters who were insisting this wasn’t the direction of travel for the U.K. a few years ago are now? The ones that used to throw a hissy fit if you mentioned nazi rise to power in 1930s Germany.

I’m not suggesting that our government would commit genocide, but those warning signs about moving further and further towards an authoritarian state are getting bigger.

Notonthestairs · 16/05/2023 09:07

I know Braverman etc is soaking up the attention at the moment but I don't think we should forget that Badenoch jumped at the chance to get a photo and recommendation from Ron DeSantis last summer. At the time he was described as a leading representative of National Conservatism.
They are all trying to get funding from the US right wing.

I remember thinking to myself on the local voting day I wonder if all the ID thing will exclude alot of those kind of insular brexit voters who don't travel much and so don't have a passport and vote Tory . Looks like I was right .Didn't take a genius to work that out really did it ? It shows that the JRM type don't understand ordinary voters one bit . What a lemon ! He's that sharp he's cut himself springs to mind.

Is there space in the Tory party for two lemons?

#dklemon and pictures of lemons are quite popular in the constituency of Daniel Kawcynski.

What’s the third of the trio of controversial bills I’m thinking of?

Electoral reform bill - reformed electoral commission, removing scrutiny and making them less independent;
crime & policing bill - limits right to peaceful protest

There was a third with a really problematic effect. I don’t think it was Raab’s human rights one or the illegal migration bill.
They were about the same time because everyone was banging on about lockdowns being an issue meanwhile the government were busy removing all sorts of accountability measures and rights while nobody batted an eyelid.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/05/2023 09:19

There’s enough lemons in the Tory party to keep us in lemonade for quite a while.

GabrielleLegs · 16/05/2023 09:23

Didn't Farage say he'd leave Britain for 'abroad' if Brexit was a failure?

We can but hope.

Peter Walker is back on Twitter duty

Back at NatCon for day two. Highlights for the day include Michael Gove doing a so-called “fireside chat” at 2pm.

‘globalists’ is today’s anti-Semitic conspiracy theory at the NatC Rally. From the Heritage Foundation. I won’t hold my breath for the Tory cabinet ministers and MPs to come out and publicly distance themselves. They know exactly who they are getting involved with here.

I’m not sure that any American turning up and causing the left of being ‘globalists’ in the U.K. is quite up to date with thinking in U.K. politics.

jgw1 · 16/05/2023 12:21

Is this the same Mariam Cates who was being lauded by some posters on other parts of this board as the voice of reason as to what should and is being taught in PSHE lessons in schools?

There's thinking going on?

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/05/2023 12:34

Good point. Thinking stopped a while ago.

itsgettingweird · 16/05/2023 16:12

but those warning signs about moving further and further towards an authoritarian state are getting bigger.

I said about 18 months ago I felt we were heading towards an authoritarian state. The warning signs haven't been subtle.

DuncinToffee · 16/05/2023 16:51

So one part of the government is trying to ‘ban’ online misogyny whilst a number of their ministers are at a conference where one of their MPs is suggesting women are being over-educated and another thinks women should stay with their husbands even if they’re abusive.

Dawn Butler raised JRM's gerrymandering comment in parliament today. The Deputy Speaker's response doesn't fill me with hope

There is the slight issue that presumably the police force you’d have to report it to is the Met.

They’d probably find they were guilty of gerrymandering but it’s irrelevant and not worth pursuing because they lost.

Oh good Lord. Reading that thread now.
