Another thing about an elected hol will be voter turnout. Will the electorate vote in large numbers? And will it just be a second tier popularity contest? It's such a tricky issue.

Would we lose the current types of people with good experience in non political life?

tobee · 08/06/2023 12:53

I did know enough about systems in other countries to compare and contrast.

borntobequiet · 08/06/2023 15:27

I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea of an elected HOL. But then I have little confidence in our electoral system, which seems mostly designed to disenfranchise people.

Boris Johnson has been sent findings of an investigation into whether he misled Parliament over the Downing Street parties scandal

He has 2 weeks to respond

If he is sanctioned for 10 days or more he faces by-election

Johnson's has no legal recourse if he objects to findings

Privileges committee says only that it will take further submissions 'into account'

'If committee decides to criticise Mr Johnson it will not come to final conclusion until it has taken into account further submissions'

Ooh interesting!

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2023 16:50

& then Parliament will have a chance to amend findings (!) and those amendments will be subject to a vote.

So even if the report recommends 10 days (and therefore trigger a by-election) MPs will get a chance to alter it.

So we can all stand by for a Johnson charm offensive.

StormShadow · 08/06/2023 16:51

I can't quite get past the idea that he might use this as an excuse not to contest Uxbridge at the next GE and try to find a safer seat.

No wonder he was in Uxbridge last week campaigning to re-open the Police Station that he, as Mayor, closed.

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2023 17:51

Parliament recess begins 20th July I think.
I assume they'll have a vote of the Privileges Committee report before then.

That would put the Tories in a bit of a bind. Either they vote to punish Johnson, and Dorries and JRM ramble on about natural injustice, or they don't and piss the electorate off further.

Well tough shit quite frankly

The Twitter community note added to Boris’s tweet on that was one of the best I’ve seen.

What did it say?

Hopefully this show the "readers added context"

Johnson's honours list to be published later today.

Sharma & Dorries are not in the list - their names have been resubmitted to the Appointments Committee for further vetting and their peerages 'are likely to be granted at a later date'.

Which seems rather fortunate for Sunak as this avoids 2 by elections.

I imagine Dorries seat becoming available at a later date might also benefit Johnson.

Stanley Johnson off the list also.

RafaistheKingofClay · 09/06/2023 07:22

Does feel like there ought to be a rule about not being able to give peerages to family members.

Roussette · 09/06/2023 08:01

Can the wonderful @DuncinToffee think about another thread... there are only a few posts to go, and I need this place as a go-to thread to check up what's going on!

I doubt this was ever an issue before Johnson.

Notonthestairs · 09/06/2023 08:13

I thought I had better get a new one rolling.

tobee · 09/06/2023 15:55

Dorries standing down with immediate effect

Nadine Dorries to stand down as MP www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65860564

Is that normal if you're ennobled?

Piggywaspushed · 09/06/2023 16:13

Yay!
