Ukrainian surrogacy in Ireland

Deeocal · 08/05/2023 20:17

This lady has used the help of a Ukrainian surrogate to grow her family, and is also sharing her journey on social media. Sharing to wish them luck on their return journey home ☘️

I believe this is also a journey Rosanna Davison (former miss world?) has undertaken although not in current circumstances.

‘I just want to get home’ – Irish couple and their newborn son shelter from bombs in Ukraine

Early last week, with her newborn baby asleep in her Kyiv hotel room, Jane Cunningham was awoken by a siren from her phone — an air-raid alert had been triggered, as Russian missiles and drones headed for the Ukrainian capital.

That story is behind a paywall

Deeocal · 08/05/2023 20:20

Unfortunately I’m not able to access but have read the paper copy!

What has happened to the surrogate mother? Does the article say?

I believe she is still in Ukraine @sashagabadon

Hope she is ok. Seems odd to commission a baby from a woman in a war torn country though and then leave her there post birth with bombs dropping ( as the article states).

Throwncrumbs · 08/05/2023 20:25

Someone buys a baby from a surrogate in a war torn country. Sorry just ridiculous, there’s a war on and her main concern is getting home, stupid woman rents a surrogate during the war, travels to the country to pick up the baby and now can’t leave…idiots. The poor baby and the poor real mother!

Garbled post, but the link works

unfortunateevents · 08/05/2023 20:30

Unbelievable.

So this couple already had a child but wanted another so paid a woman in a war torn country to have their baby. Gross.

They then ran the risk that the baby might die during a war and that they could be killed when they went to collect him, potentially leaving their existing child without parents.

Then they ran to a newspaper to tell everyone about their 'journey'

Selfish idiots.

Goodoccasionallypoor · 08/05/2023 20:36

What positive sentiment are you taking from this story, op?

Completely agree with this. How bloody selfish.

Appalling exploitation. It really sickens me to see Irish people renting wombs from poor women and buying babies considering our own terrible history. Have you been to Ukraine, OP? I have, and even before the war it was a desperately poor place full of people with few choices in life. For shame, portraying this as a feelgood story.

RestingMurderousFace · 08/05/2023 20:41

A local woman here used a Ukrainian surrogate, cost 21K. I was horrified.

blahblahblah1654 · 08/05/2023 20:47

I feel so bad for these poor ladies who are so desperate for money they have to go through pregnancy and childbirth and give the baby away. It's so exploitative.

OP, you have started two threads on this topic now. Care you share your thoughts on it with us?

Deeocal · 08/05/2023 21:12

@unfortunateevents i know of the couple through mutual friends and support their decision to do this. As I said on the thread, I wish them well and wanted others to join me in this.

Generally women aren't pro the exploitation of vulnerable women. Buying babies and removing them from the mother they have been growing attached to in the womb is an awful, immoral thing to do.

Whadda · 08/05/2023 21:15

Awful.

They’re no better than sex tourists in Thailand.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 08/05/2023 21:16

I have to wonder about the mentality of someone who sees a war torn country and their first thought is “what can I get from these people”.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 08/05/2023 21:16

Here's my thoughts on people who exploit impoverished and vulnerable women and their bodies for their own desires: cruel, selfish and greedy.

a little surprised by the tone of the comments on this thread

A lot of women see surrogacy bad commodifying women's bodies and it has a n extra unethical layer when the surrogacy they paid is from a war torn or is desperate due to poverty etc.

Some people go abroad to get round their own country's surrogacy laws.

Im aware some women do have babies for other people without money changing hands and for genuine altruistic reasons but many people think buying a baby is wrong and see stories like this as negatives, using a woman from a war torn country to carry a baby for them and then selling their story to the papers is gonna be seen as exploitation by many and they're not wrong in calling it out.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 08/05/2023 21:18

All surrogacy should be banned completely it should also be illegal for citizens of this country to go elsewhere for surrogacy. Surrogacy is banned completely in most of Western Europe rightly so
