Wont make a difference in most safe tory seats of course

It will. This used to be the safest Tory seat in the country, followed by Wokingham. Redwood’s majority is now down to 7k in Wokingham and the majority here has fallen with every GE in the last 12 years. We now have a LibDem county council and a Labour mayor. I think there will be a lot of staying at home and spoilt papers here next time.

I imagine so.

Low turnout rarely good for opposition parties though

Also worth bearing in mind, when ministers are asked about the BBC Chairman today, that Richard Sharp is not only long-term friends with Boris Johnson

He is also Rishi Sunak’s former boss

twitter.com/harryyorke1/status/1617088326195879939?s=46&t=4f1v9HWhHY3oSGnTgqmugw

BBC chairman Sharp declined to appear on the BBC to defend himself.

All in bed together, all got their noses in the same trough 😠

Bloody hell.... James Cleverley. LK drilled down on Zahawi and why isn't Cleverley answering any of the questions but saying he doesn't know. And why doesn't he know.

Cleverley said he's been in the US and when he got back he went shopping.

Okey dokey Hmm

I must remember when I'm next asked why I didn't know something I should to say

"I went to France and then Asda" Grin

Fladdermus · 22/01/2023 12:22

It's a bit like my exH's answer to DD about why he hadn't seen. 'Because he was moving house'. For 29 years?

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2023 12:30

James Cleverly was squirming today , but trying to appear aloof ' nothing to see here ' let's brush it under the big carpet shall we?
People still defend it all though ,' if this the best the opposition can come up with ' attitude. Anyone can be bit a late paying their way or organise some big loans in return for a lucrative job! Let's move on .. a couple of lbc callers this morning said the same.
It's the arrogance that annoys me more and the ones who feel its all alright.

Roussette · 22/01/2023 13:02

I do not get the mindset of ... "he's paid what he owed, why are we going on about it"

Because he tried to dodge paying tax whilst being Chancellor and the top man of HMRC!

People are so passive and ridiculous sometimes. You get an instant £100 fine if your tax isn't paid on the due date. They don't even allow you 24 hours. There is a cut off date and that's it. Miss it, slapped with £100 fine.

Yet we are supposed to think what Zahawi did is OK? My mind is truly boggled.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 22/01/2023 14:12

Can you imagine being so wealthy that you accidentally forget to declare £27 million to the taxman and never even noticed?

Because he didn't forget. And he noticed.

He's worth £100million. So it's over quarter of his worth suddenly landing in his bank account.

If I were to suddenly receive a quarter of my worth in my account, you can bet your bottom dollar I would be thinking... shit... wonderful... oh god how much tax do I have to pay on this.

If it was £500 I'd be noticing!

Of course he noticed. I was being facetious as we're expected to buy the 'oops I didn't notice it had fallen down the back of the sofa' bullshit.

Exactly!

I've just been on my bank account because you never know Grin.
I have sold something on Vinted and the money's come through, that was nice!

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2023 16:08

And Johnson makes a surprise visit to Ukraine

Wonder who paid for it....

As an aside I’ve just watched Laura Kuenssberg from this morning. Did I imagine it or did she go in much harder on Cleverly than normal and much easier on Reeves? She actually fed Reeves the Davros question and gave the Tesco chairman the opportunity to endorse Labour’s approach to business. I was a bit shocked.

Totally agree. I was surprised how hard she went in on Cleverley. But bearing in mind 80% of his time there was about Zahawi and he kept saying he knew nothing, I was getting as irritated as LK.

Blossomtoes · 22/01/2023 16:21

Yes, me too. Usually she wouldn’t have pursued it as hard as she did though. Making all MPs punish their tax return is such a good idea, I couldn’t believe that Cleverly was arguing that politicians shouldn’t be held to higher standards than the rest of us, he really is an arrogant tosser.

Blossomtoes · 22/01/2023 16:22

Publish, not punish!😡 Damned autocorrect!

Chevyimpala67 · 22/01/2023 16:27

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
There has never been a more corrupt, venal, self serving, talentless, ignorant, law breaking, callous government than the current tory government.

I feel utter contempt for all of them.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2023 16:52

But Johnson is such a likeable buffoon....

I just saw that on twitter. It’s beyond belief. I’m so angry with the absolute lack of protection and care for children just because they’re the group of choice to be demonised by the government.

I said on another thread, but all the shitheads on mumsnet, fb, twitter who blithely go “oh they’re all adults pretending to be kids, they’re liars and criminals” - everyone who believes, repeats and spreads that absolute shit has blood on their hands. The government are allowing children to be kidnapped to appease their racist base. That’s how low they’ll go.

Librarian, I just want to say that I really appreciate your posts on immigration threads and I admire your patience and politeness with certain posters.

Thank you @DuncinToffee that’s really kind. 💐

I’m definitely updating my CV to add “good at patiently googling things for people who don’t understand how google works or if it even exists.” and “Forces people to learn everything about the asylum system against their will”. Skillz 😁

I'm in Sweden and here all tax returns are public documents. I can look up my neighbours or anyone else I'm interested in for a small fee (used to free). It hasn't led to a total collapse of society but it does contribute to a much fairer society.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2023 19:17

Apparently Sunak said he would publish his tax returns by Christmas but he hasn't yet

Good point

He wouldn’t dare. None of them would, the last thing any of them wants is to show us just how obscenely wealthy they really are.

DuncinToffee · 22/01/2023 19:21

Wasn't his wealth published on the Times rich list?
