This awful winter virus

Anyone else suffering?

My immediate family, half my wider family and loads of friends seem to have the exact same evil virus.

Fatigue, congestion, headache, insomnia (partly because can't breath through nose), hunger evolving to a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Honestly it's worse than covid and doesn't seem to go. OK it's only been 5 days but it feels much longer as I've been awake so much.

Pretty sure it's the same virus for my relatives, even though they live 40, 60 and 150 miles away.

I'm also reasonably sure my winter colds have not usually been this bad, though to be fair I can't remember that well as it was pre covid.

I think I had it a couple of months ago. It affected my voicebox for weeks. It seems to be making another pass through the office. Yes, I found it worse than covid.

violetcuriosity · 06/12/2022 19:20

Omg I thought I was just having pregnancy issues. For the last 2 weeks I've had congestion, severe insomnia, fatigue and headaches. When I blow my nose there's often blood too, I can't seem to kick it. I actually cried at 4am this morning because I was so frustrated

Mangogogogo · 06/12/2022 19:23

I had a chest infection and was slowly recovering, then went to a big Meeting where everyone Bar 2 people!! Got this Brutal Virus. I then gave it to my family cos I’m fucking kind and we’ve all been Man down for a week and counting.

i have also cried.

I feel like crap, no temp but 9 days in on day 5 rivers and I mean rivers of snot, exhausted plus sinus pain. It isn’t worse than covid for me but I had it in wave one plus zero vaccine then and was seriously ill got long covid and it took a year to fully recover.

I had to go to bed and leave teen with pre schooler because i couldn't take little one to pre school i couldn't move to drive. Thankfully it was teens day off college

GratefulCheddar · 06/12/2022 19:28

@violetcuriosity its the inside of your nose becoming inflamed, try steam on your face it’s helped loads for my poor nasal cavities. I used olbas oil but pretty sure it’s contra indicated for pregnancy so please read up first . Washing nasal cavities with cooled boiled water with salt is good, have a look on you tube.

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 19:28

I can't speak above a whisper at the moment because my throat hurts too much.

Just did the washing up as I'm feeling bad for DH who is recovering himself (5 days ahead of me) and looking after kids alone. Feel like I've climbed a mountain!

DS and I have got it. I've never seen him so I'll - he has a terrible hacking cough. I'm not quite as bad but have had very little sleep over the past 2 nights.

magicalorange · 06/12/2022 19:31

I had this for 3.5 weeks, tested negative for covid throughout. It's horrid, I sympathise. DH and I are much better but still coughing 6 weeks later.

Night nurse was the only thing that allowed us to sleep. Even then we slept in separate rooms for 3 weeks because we were waking each other her up every hour.

We were much more ill with this than we were with covid.

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 19:32

The lack of sleep is unusual for me. I don't think it's just being conjested, it feels like the insomnia is a stand alone symptom. Obviously does nothing for your recovery to be so sleep deprived too.

Yep I'm day 13 and feeling horrendous.

Started with chesty cough to the point of being sick every morning, constant headache, exhausted, then the rivers of snot started.

I've just started a week of antibiotics cos it's graduated into a sinus infection. You wouldn't believe the colour of the shit coming out of my face this morning!

Floraflower3 · 06/12/2022 19:32

It started off as a mild sore throat for me then descended into a dry and now productive cough. The cough is awful especially at night. So many people in London are coughing it’s madness!

WhichWitchIsTheWitch · 06/12/2022 19:32

Same thing going round here. Everyone at works asking everyone else “have you done a covid test?” “Yes, it’s negative”.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2022 19:33

Dh and around 7 other people we know have this. He’s been for a week and thought he was getting better but today his cough has got so much worse. I’m just hoping I don’t get it because it’s nasty.

Vinylloving · 06/12/2022 19:33

I think I've had it, I completely lost my voice it was all squeaky and very sore. I was struggling through then decided to give up and spend a whole day in bed resting and sleeping and getting lots of fluids. It seemed to help me get back to a place where I could get on and function. Still coughing and blocked up though

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 19:34

Mine started really mild too. I was feeling really smug thinking I'd got a milder version of what DH had. Turned out it was just the start.

Same! And my response is - I've done 8 tests, FFS!!!

violetcuriosity · 06/12/2022 19:40

The weirdest part is definitely the insomnia, it is partly linked to the congestion but I've never had sleep issues like this with other colds.

Have you tried night nurse? I was sceptical but tried it Saturday night and slept 10 hours straight through. I usually average about 5 hours of patches of broken sleep.

Comedycook · 06/12/2022 19:44

Yes, 3 weeks ago my ds 14 was really ill with the symptoms you describe. He had to have a whole week off school which is unlike him. Then DD caught it. Got better, then fell ill last Friday again. Was ill for three days coughing and exhausted. Now I have it. Just feels like endless germs and illness. Can't remember when all of us were well at the same time.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2022 19:44

Night nurse is the only good bit about being ill. I wish I could take it every night!

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 19:44

I've not tried night nurse. Might get some tomorrow if I'm well enough.
I've had loads of lemsip max but it doesn't seem to do much.

lochmaree · 06/12/2022 19:47

We've all got something - me, DH, DS1 who's almost 3 and DS2 who's 5m. We've had it a week now and it's still awful. Some nausea, very sore throat, horrendous cough, fatigue, muscle pain, headaches. Not massively snotty though (yet!) DH had a swab done at the doctor yesterday and results should be back tomorrow.

BessieSurtees · 06/12/2022 20:04

I think I’ve started with it. I wfh and have been out very little. This weekend I’ve been out to meet friends, none of who were coughing or poorly but I couldn’t sleep last night and today I am coughing, sore throat, tight chest, hot eyes, sneezing, runny nose and feel so tired already.
