This awful winter virus

Anyone else suffering?

My immediate family, half my wider family and loads of friends seem to have the exact same evil virus.

Fatigue, congestion, headache, insomnia (partly because can't breath through nose), hunger evolving to a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Honestly it's worse than covid and doesn't seem to go. OK it's only been 5 days but it feels much longer as I've been awake so much.

Pretty sure it's the same virus for my relatives, even though they live 40, 60 and 150 miles away.

I'm also reasonably sure my winter colds have not usually been this bad, though to be fair I can't remember that well as it was pre covid.

My youngest (older teen) has had it she has been SO ill. Missed parties, her hobbies the works and still looks shit a week later.

Sunshineismyfriend · 06/12/2022 21:51

3 out of 4 of us have had this. I had it a couple of weeks after covid but did feel worse with covid. Tested for covid again as was quite similar but test was negative. Daughter thinks she’s getting it again now as she’s got a sore throat again. I hope she’s wrong!

darisdet · 06/12/2022 21:52

Yes

I had to stay in to recuperate most of the weekend. Thought I was over it but felt distinctly woozy and fuzzy (if that makes sense) when out today.

I have this, I think it's flu.

Influenza A is doing the rounds.

You know it's flu when you can't stand up for more than a few mins. The last time I felt this ill was when I last had flu about 10 years ago!!

I've had a high fever continuously for 3 days, despite max meds, headache, joint pain, nausea, hacking cough that makes me vomit, loss of appetite and cold sweats.

Grim.

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 21:58

For those saying it could be flu, doesn't that usually come on fairly rapidly and involve fever? I've not had a fever at all.

Also, everyone in my immediate and wider family have had flu vaccinations. I know it doesn't stop flu but I'd hope I didn't feel this shitty having been vaccinated.

Both my children had it, awful lasted for weeks. X

darisdet · 06/12/2022 22:02

Fever but no cough here.

I'm not a medic but I always thought flu includes a fever? I don't have one so am thinking it's another kind of bug...

I had this in November. I now have covid. I can safely say that covid is worse but this virus came a close second.

mawik · 06/12/2022 22:23

I am in 3rd week of this virus! I have had covid twice and this has been worse!
apart from the fact I never got my sense of smell back! And was left with heart failure!

After not wearing masks for ages on public transport and getting covid I’m now going back to wearing them. Don’t give a shit what others think.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/12/2022 22:31

Those of you who had this but without a fever did you have your flu jab? What I'm noticing is sudden onset fever with no flu jab and all the other symptoms but no fever with a flu jab!!

Wiloswisp · 06/12/2022 22:32

Yes DH and I currently have it. Two weeks today for me, sore throat, fatigue, headaches which went after a week but the cough is relentless at night. DH who is about five days behind me went to docs today and was told he has the beginning of a chest infection. Don’t feel I have a chest infection but we’ve resorted to separate rooms as we are keeping each other awake at night.

we both got Covid at beginning of October then we had a snotty cold but not too bad straight after and then a few days feeling ok and now this. I am soooo fed up of feeling crap.

it’s difficult to know what to do, avoiding going out, using masks etc and try hard not to catch things but at some point we need to get our immunity back but I do wonder how long that may actually take.

No fever for me, I had a flu jab and a Covid jab at the end of September a week apart.

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2022 22:39

My dh has had no fever and has had the flu jab and another Covid jab about a month ago.

dragonfly16 · 06/12/2022 22:41

Yes DC had fever of 39, very sore throat, chest cough and snot ++. Was unwell enough to need 4 days off school. Actually slept during day which is unheard off. Much worse than when we had CoVid.

Perennis · 06/12/2022 22:42

NHS says flu comes on suddenly. If it builds up more slowly it's more likely some other virus.

AnyFucker · 06/12/2022 22:44

Just got over it. Started off with constant sneezing which was epic, made me piss my pants a little every time and I am not usually incontinent. Blocked nose but still running like a tap.

Than the congestion of ears and head. Feeling of malaise, muscle aches but no fever. Loss of appetite, exhaustion.

Then the cough and the layer of cold sores which won’t heal. The type that leave a permanent mark under your nose.

Am so relieved to be feeling better. I tested for covid twice and was negative. It didn’t feel like flu either. A good old fashioned nasty virus, supercharged.

Getupthychimneylad · 06/12/2022 22:50

Yes, in Portugal and have it, had it end of October then back worse since last week, knocked us out completely for a couple of days, just sleeping all day and temp. Now just so weak and non stop cough, especially at night. Some nights of no sleep, feels like covid to me, really weird

IamSamantha · 06/12/2022 22:51

We have it. 4 weeks of coughs, fevers, sickness and we're still going. Both dc been off school when they are rarely off and I have had to take time off work which is again unheard of. I'm fully vaccinated for both flu and covid. Have had covid a couple of times and this is very similar. Been to docs for checks as cough now productive but they've said it's viral.

I'm exhausted and ache all over. Cannot sleep for coughing and feel sick with the phlegm. Everytime I lie down etc it starts. I'm also suffering stress incontinence for the first time and basically wetting myself constantly. It's horrid.

ThisGirlNever · 06/12/2022 22:55

We've all had a vomiting bug and then straight into a nasty cough.

I'm a bit more concerned about the Strep A, but I'm hoping my son had it a few weeks ago - very, very poorly, but made immediate improvements when he took antibiotics.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/12/2022 22:57

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2022 22:39

My dh has had no fever and has had the flu jab and another Covid jab about a month ago.

Proves my theory then 😁

I'm definitely regretting not getting the flu jab as 3 days of a high fever has been awful.

olivehater · 06/12/2022 22:58

Why do people ask this on a national forum ( actual international). There is more than one virus knowing about in winter across the country!
