This awful winter virus

Anyone else suffering?

My immediate family, half my wider family and loads of friends seem to have the exact same evil virus.

Fatigue, congestion, headache, insomnia (partly because can't breath through nose), hunger evolving to a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Honestly it's worse than covid and doesn't seem to go. OK it's only been 5 days but it feels much longer as I've been awake so much.

Pretty sure it's the same virus for my relatives, even though they live 40, 60 and 150 miles away.

I'm also reasonably sure my winter colds have not usually been this bad, though to be fair I can't remember that well as it was pre covid.

Me too. I'm also pregnant so battling the lack of medication I can actually take. Along with every cough making me vomit and an already weak pelvic floor added to the mix. I feel broken!!
Thankfully no one else in the household has it so hopefully it stays that way.

I've had it about a week now and still got it, friend has had it 8 days, sister and her kids have all got it too. Worse than covid for me, I've been having heart palpatations too is anyone else getting that with this virus?

My mum did! Told me in the morning 'I thought I was going to die last night!'

This virus is an utter bitch. I just feel totally wiped out. Two weeks now. I've been going to work throughout (they wanted me too, everyone else has it too!) and honestly I just want to curl up and sleep. I've been sleeping all night too. I suppose I'm lucky not to have the insomnia some people are!

It's my sinuses and all the fricking snot that's bothering me most. Is anyone else getting crazy dizzy spells too?

Yep, I've got this. Caught it from my son, and - for us at least - it's flu, Influenza A. They swabbed him at A&E to check, and once they found what it was they moved us into an isolation room pronto.

I've had my flu jab, and was all smug that I wasn't catching it. Then I started what felt like a light cold. And it's just got worse and worse every day since then. I haven't felt this ill since ... I last had flu, 23 years ago!

Oh interesting
I wonder if that's what my kids have then? We've all been vaccinated too and my DH is now coming down with it I think.
Did/do you have a cough?

took me a month to get over - and even now there's a slight, lingering cough.

I made the mistake of going for a short walk when I was feeling a bit better after a couple of weeks, and knocked myself right back for a whole weekend.

Lost voice after 3 weeks, just when the cough was calming down.

Eldest had it for a week, youngest had a slight sore throat and cough for a couple of days, it was me that it floored.

Weirdly, everyone I talk to at work - even entire continents away - is describing the same symptoms, it's just going through us all like wildfire.

Bluezoo123 · 06/12/2022 21:08

All got it here too. How long is it taking people to get over it? Ds is on day 8 and has missed the last 6 days of school. Seems to have turned a corner but is still bunged up and has a cough on and off (managed to sleep through last night without coughing). Is meant to be heading off on school ski trip in 4 days time and got everything crossed he will be well enough...

happylittletree · 06/12/2022 21:11

I have it! It's been a week now, feels like longer. I feel shattered all the time. It's making me feel less alone to read about others' struggles with it!

NeverTooLateToSing · 06/12/2022 21:13

@ofwarren oh yes. The cough to end all coughs. Everyone in this house sounds like they're coughing up a lung. Plus: headache, fever, chills, nausea, exhaustion, sore throat, bunged-up ear.

But that hacking cough is the worst.

My son is on day 11 and just managed to go back to work today. But taking it really easy!

Distantview · 06/12/2022 21:15

I'm on day 6 of exactly the symptoms the OP describes. On day 1 I tested positive for Covid.

I dread to think what he would have been like if he hadn't been vaccinated then.

plominoagain · 06/12/2022 21:17

And here . It’s decimated work completely - you could hear the cough travelling down the room , and about 12 people ended up going home early . I hung on till the end because I just had the sore throat , but now I’m coughing my ass off and my back really hurts . Can only assume I’ve pulled something . Bloody grim .

TimeAtTheBar · 06/12/2022 21:19

Me and DS currently. I’ve had the last 2 days off work and got cover for tomorrow as well.

I haven’t slept for three nights. I’m almost tempted to have a glass of wine to see if it knocks me out a bit. But I’d probably just throw it up. My legs hurt like I’ve been kicked in the shins. Fever, sweats, sore throat, swollen neck glands.

DS thankfully has it milder (he’s 11) but has still mostly been in bed during the day which is unheard of, he perked up yesterday evening and this evening but I think that was boredom and calpol.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 06/12/2022 21:21

I have it now and I feel so dreadful.

And my poorly baby won't fucking settle so I can go to sleep!

WhatNoPeas · 06/12/2022 21:22

We all tested negative for covid.

It's definitely not flu. I've had flu before and that's quite distinctive - comes on really fast, fever and muscle pains.

This started slow and I though I'd just got a mild cold, but it built to 3 days in bed.

I'm getting better but it's really slow. I could do with a decent night's sleep.

Bleugh. I had it last week. Started to feel better after five days. But yeah, was worse than Covid (it wasn't covid as I tested a few times). The worst bit was the everlasting headache. Would. Not. Shift.

You're shitting me right ?

Rudolfthepurple · 06/12/2022 21:25

I think I have what you describe OP, pretty much identical symptoms. A nasty virus and I've tested negative for covid too.

Others on the thread with severe fevers etc sounds more like flu :(
Hope everyone feels better soon!

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 06/12/2022 21:29

Yep I've got this now.
Started with a cold around 10 days ago, progressed to coughing up phlegm, I've coughed to the point of vomiting. One minute I'm freezing and shivering and the next im burning up. Not had a sore throat or headache.
The muscle aches and fatigue are something else though

KevinsChilli · 06/12/2022 21:30

I’ve just had the very sore throat, came on very quickly and hurt so much. Then started to fade off a bit during daytime but night times I’d feel awful with it.

Welshy26 · 06/12/2022 21:34

Yes I've got it. Tomorrow day 8. Headache finally shifted but my god never had so much snot, mucus, catarrh. Im choked with it. My right ear is completely blocked, my chest is rattling, my cough is productive but I can't get anything up. Last night in bed I was drenched with a fever. Its the absolute pits. Been a long long time since I felt this ill. Tested negative for Covid though.

billycorn · 06/12/2022 21:44

I’m currently ill with it, horrible

Withnoshoes · 06/12/2022 21:44

Sounds like some of you have got actual Flu. It’s rife. We test in hospital and many are positive for mostly Flu A. Although we’ve seen the odd Flu B! It’s pretty brutal and is wiping patients of all ages out as flu tends to do. I

Of course many other viruses with similar symptoms too.

Flu doesn’t present exactly the same way and symptoms each time a person gets it….. could well be flu!

cantba · 06/12/2022 21:47

Same here. Feel rotten. Both teens had a week off school. Never off like that ever before. Now i have it.

Norfolkungood · 06/12/2022 21:48

Me, DH and eldest DS have had it and it seems worse than when I had covid. Cough , cough, cough, constant nose blowing, sore throat and just feeling wiped out. I'd never seen DH so ill. He lost a whole week while in bed with it and this wasn't even because of a man flu dramatisation. The only one who didn't get ot was youngest DS who's had the nasal flu vaccine and he's usually the first one to catch anything that's going about.

toomuchlaundry · 06/12/2022 21:50

Have had flu jab, not really had a temperature but had all the other symptoms
