This awful winter virus

Anyone else suffering?

My immediate family, half my wider family and loads of friends seem to have the exact same evil virus.

Fatigue, congestion, headache, insomnia (partly because can't breath through nose), hunger evolving to a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Honestly it's worse than covid and doesn't seem to go. OK it's only been 5 days but it feels much longer as I've been awake so much.

Pretty sure it's the same virus for my relatives, even though they live 40, 60 and 150 miles away.

I'm also reasonably sure my winter colds have not usually been this bad, though to be fair I can't remember that well as it was pre covid.

I've got something similar but no cough. Worst thing is the blocked nose, painful sinuses and streams of snot. Have only had a fever once but general malaise, aching joints, night sweats, loss of appetite and loss of taste and smell since last weekend (tested negative for Covid). I've had covid twice and this is worse. I've also had the flu jab. I got antibiotics from the GP today for sinusitis.

OakTreex · 06/12/2022 23:11

I've had this one about a month ago. Was vile. Hate to say it, but although most of the symptoms passed quickly I'm still suffering with sinusitis and have been ever since, which I've never had before. I've become possibly addicted to Sudafed Nose Unblocking Spray. I panicked when I realised I was running out earlier and made a special trip to get more. There is still an ungodly amount of mucus continually dripping down my throat, thick and green from my nose and my sinuses ache at times.

Going to call the doc this week because I'm so bloody fed up now.

I hope you all manage to shift it better than I have!

You definitely need a GP call. I've had it 2 weeks and on Saturday this awful bright yellow liquid started streaming from the left hand sinus plus horrific throbbing pain down that side of my face. Spoke to GP today and he said sinus infection and a week of penicillin xx

I’ve just recovered from this with still some sinus pain. I usually shake things off but this floored me. I also had insomnia.
Night Nurse and hot showers for the steam were the only things that helped.

GratefulCheddar · 07/12/2022 01:57

I bought a saline nasal spray which seems to have helped. I’m allergic to lots of stuff so bought one for babies as is just water and salt.

I am sleeping on the recliner sofa so I’m a bit upright as well but am suffering with terrible insomnia, can’t sleep flat at all. I’m also really hungry all the time, when I had covid plus when I have had awful flu which is two previous times I could hardly eat.

darisdet · 07/12/2022 02:12

I'm also quite hungry and eating more. Insomnia yes

Nurofen, hot drinks and vitamin c drinks (those effervescent tablets) seem to be helpful.

NHS says flu comes on suddenly. If it builds up more slowly it's more likely some other virus.

I’d always thought that, too, but this version seems to come on gradually (and keep getting worse!)! We had Influenza A confirmed by swabs done at A&E.

Haruka · 07/12/2022 07:46

I wonder whether it's some flu/ cold virus mutant or Covid which stubbornly refuses to show up on a LFT.

I've had a hacking cough for days with all the usual cold symptoms, but then the sudden onset of aching muscles I've only ever had with Covid, now also joined by fatigue hitting me every time I so much as get off the sofa to walk to the loo.

Colleagues have had it, too, but I seem the worst hit out of all of us.

olivehater · 06/12/2022 22:58

Why do people ask this on a national forum ( actual international). There is more than one virus knowing about in winter across the country!

I don't think everyone on this thread has the same thing. I do think a lot of us do though. I think the people with bad cold symptoms which came on slowly PLUS insomnia are more likely to have the same virus.

Those of you who had this but without a fever did you have your flu jab? What I'm noticing is sudden onset fever with no flu jab and all the other symptoms but no fever with a flu jab!!

Yes! I had this without fever and I've had my flu jab. It did feel very flu-like: aching all over, and even clothes were uncomfortable against my skin.

CottonSock · 07/12/2022 09:52

I have a raging fever and have had by flu jab. Its probably a different virus.
My dd who shared it with me will see GP this morning.

Welshy26 · 07/12/2022 10:42

I've got the fever on and off and had my flu jab about 6 weeks ago.

toomuchlaundry · 07/12/2022 10:50

Has anyone got balance issues? When I got out of bed it was like I was walking on a boat! I assume down to blocked sinuses

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/12/2022 10:51

I have it. Or covid. Don't know which and don't care because either way I feel like utter death.

It's my birthdays on Saturday and we had a weekend away booked which probably won't now happen.

Has anyone found any medication to touch it? Paracetamol isn't helping me in the slightest.

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/12/2022 10:53

And oh my god, the snot. What little sleep o am getting is disturbed becussebinkeep waking up with my face covered in bloody snot Envy

warofthemonstertrucks · 07/12/2022 10:54

And yes to the balance. My ears are painful so I assume vertigo caused by ear infection as part
Of the whole package

It's not just that. It doesn't sound like we all have the same thing, but many shared symptoms, helpful remedies, and a bit of a grumble, I personally find of use.

Same. Both my kids have had flu vaccine and no temp. One has a slightly raised temp once.

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 07/12/2022 12:18

I've taken the day off work. At the moment the cough is the worst bit for me, it's a really hacking cough that's made me sick at times. Ribs are sore from coughing, heads sore from coughing and my muscles ache. I'm living on ibuprofen and lemsip. No appetite at all, and to add the cherry on the cake I'm practically wetting myself when I cough. Been testing everyday so definitely not covid

TheMousePipes · 07/12/2022 13:37

Meant to be going to a gig tonight that has been booked for over a year. That’s not happening- this morning I coughed so hard I vomited down my front and my poor pelvic floor is in tatters. Excitingly the snot has started today in earnest so when I cough I need to have a tissue at the ready as well.
I have never felt more appealing.

yellowsmileyface · 07/12/2022 14:25

I'm on day 5 of whatever virus/flu this is. Bit worrying to read that some people have been affected for weeks!

Main symptoms currently are sore throat and cough, headache, and extreme fatigue. It's just so relentless! I've also been struggling to sleep. It's awful feeling exhausted yet unable to sleep.

I do feel like I'm getting over the worst of it, but I think some of the symptoms will linger for a while.

It helps to have a bit of a moan at least!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 07/12/2022 19:17

I'm so poorly. My throat is so sore. What can I take for it?

I just want to hide in my bed but I've got two small children and my husband is self employed so can't miss work.

I'm so miserable.

Yes I thought the same, and like you I got the hacking cough and a cold but later on aching muscles and tiredness like flu.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 06/12/2022 19:42

Have you tried night nurse? I was sceptical but tried it Saturday night and slept 10 hours straight through. I usually average about 5 hours of patches of broken sleep.

Watch out though, can give you the mad shits.

mummabubs · 07/12/2022 19:29

I've had all these symptoms over the last week. Where I live the PCRs now test for multiple different things, mine came back positive for flu. (One of the A strains not covered by this years vaccine). It's been horrible and the worst illness I've had in years. 😬
