This awful winter virus

Anyone else suffering?

My immediate family, half my wider family and loads of friends seem to have the exact same evil virus.

Fatigue, congestion, headache, insomnia (partly because can't breath through nose), hunger evolving to a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Honestly it's worse than covid and doesn't seem to go. OK it's only been 5 days but it feels much longer as I've been awake so much.

Pretty sure it's the same virus for my relatives, even though they live 40, 60 and 150 miles away.

I'm also reasonably sure my winter colds have not usually been this bad, though to be fair I can't remember that well as it was pre covid.

My colleague who I've been working closely with and got it from me is now testing positive for Covid. So looks like it is that here, despite me testing negative. I wonder if it's because my test kits were quite old? Around 18 months or so I think. Would that make a difference?

Has this thing absolutely scrambled anyone else's brain? I'm so incoherent, keep scrambling up what I want to say!

My test kits are that old too. Yet they all show instant positives. Two different kinds too. The flowflex ones and the really old ones with the separate vials of liquid. Doesn't make much sense.

MistletoeMouse · 11/12/2022 15:00

Meant to say @SnuggleBuggleBoo that yes I feel scrambled too. First couple of days I was fluey style wiped out. Now everything is such an effort and I'm getting words mixed up. I keep begging people not to ring and ask how I am and just text me instead. It's so bloody exhausting thinking of words. I'm menopausal so am bad enough at the best of times.

Thought I was over it on day nine, but it is still there as a nasty cough. Ugh. Does anything work to relieve this?

@Pumpkin20222 my DS got it after his flu nasal spray and gave it to all of us. Five weeks on and he’s still coughing after jumping around (he’s nearly three) and a little bit at night even after a course of steroids :( I’ve still got a horrendous tickly cough which seems to be coming back! DS is now full of snot so loads of mucus causing more cough AND he has what seems to be conjunctivitis with a temp so I’m not sure if it’s related even though he’s had four weeks since he had the fever etc originally.
my mum got it from us and her cough was even more brutal and she still has it five weeks later!

Anyone’s oxygen levels dipping under 95%

Yes, mine went down to 94 on and off for a couple of days. Back up to normal now, though.

TheMousePipes · 12/12/2022 13:34

Day 11 here. Feeling a lot better than last week but still basically feel like shit. Cough won’t go, sinuses are disgusting, so tired all the time! I managed to go out for an hour earlier but back home on the sofa feeling wan again. I can smell again though - I can smell the Christmas tree today so that’s nice.

warofthemonstertrucks · 12/12/2022 13:40

I'm also feeling a bit better. Still full of snot and like Pp went out for an hour yesterday then had to spend all afternoon lying down. I'd really like my sense of smell to come back next please!

Fluffnotscruffy · 12/12/2022 13:57

I woke up yesterday really congested, violent sneezing, my face felt sore and tender and a dull headache.
Nose was completely blocked but also constantly streaming.
This morning I coughed up a massive rubbery sticky ball of mucus, like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was the size of a golf ball and solid 🤢 It was absolutely vile. More has come up since.

I’m starting to feel much better since the congestion started to clear. Hoping
it means I’ll be on the mend in a day or 2, but
this thread has me thinking maybe not.

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 14:31

Day 14 and I feel drained today. Not coughing as much. Sense of taste still not great. Blocked ears

NeverTooLateToSing · 12/12/2022 18:54

Day 10, and the GP has prescribed doxycycline, as the infection on my chest has gone nasty (technical term). Still feeling a constant low-level of suffocation through congestion. Just exhausted with it all.

declutteringmymind · 12/12/2022 19:21

I have this. Worked all last week and like others thought I'd got away with it. I had general malaise, aches and a scratchy throat. Covid negative. Since then it has progressed to full on cold, cough, sinusitis. Headache is awful. I'm on day 8. Covid negative. Not a strep throat either.

Wishing all of you well.

That's what I was prescribed for my chest on Thursday.

Drcoxisafox · 12/12/2022 20:45

I think mine is coming back again. My cough is suddenly back and my chest feels horrible. Joy.

This is what has happened to me today. Chest suddenly got worse again. I put in an econsult re the sinusitis today so hoping to get some ABs tomorrow. I've never known a virus like it.

This can happen at the point where the viral infection gets overtaken by a bacterial one which moves in to your lungs. It's why coughs can seem to be getting better then get so much worse. Worth a chat with a GP if you can. (I did an e-consult form this morning, GP phoned me this afternoon and sent a prescription to the chemist for me. Fingers crossed!)

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 12/12/2022 22:28

Day 3. Woke up soaked in sweat. Temp has been high.
Have had the worst headache of my lifetime - Excruciating and sharp.
My whole body aches and I just can’t get comfortable.
Sinuses are congested and causing pain across my face and teeth.
Ears ache.
Feel very very tired.

Missed a day at work today and thinking of taking one more tomorrow.

Seriously this is the worst I’ve felt in years. I’d rather have covid ten times over. Awful.

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 12/12/2022 22:31

Has anyone else taken time off work. I feel so guilty taking 1 day, let alone two if I have tomorrow off.
But I can barely sleep and I’m in constant pain. Plus, my husband and son have now caught this, so it would definitely take out some more people at work.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 12/12/2022 22:33

Ugh. Day 13. Cough is getting worse again. Anyone else having to break out the tenalady?

toomuchlaundry · 12/12/2022 22:42

No-one wants this for Christmas @Iwannabeacrocodilehunter. Take the day off

lollipoprainbow · 12/12/2022 22:47

I can't stop coughing after a week and blew my nose so hard earlier I went temporarily deaf. It's horrid.

I know. There’s so much pressure to go in though. I’m a school teacher. Equally, I’d hate to give this to any of the children I teach, it’s agony and miserable. I’m hoping for a miracle recovery. I think I’m just going to have to stay off until it passes. You’re right. I could really ruin someone’s Christmas.

BudgeUpAnne · 12/12/2022 23:05

I was off for a week, it was awful. Ok on day 5 of antibiotics and I feel so much better,.back to work today and my headache is finally gone

warofthemonstertrucks · 12/12/2022 23:12

I've just pissed myself whilst coughing. Beyond a joke.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 16/12/2022 20:27

I've just tested positive for covid! I had 2 weeks of feeling rough, 2 days of feeling a lot better, 2 days of feeling like I was going down with something and now I officially have bloody covid. I don't know if that was it all along or if it saw my weakened immune system and thought it'd join in the fun.

Itstheimplication · 16/12/2022 21:50

It’s horrible. I haven’t felt this bad since I had the flu years ago.
