Thanks Duncin

Thank you for another thread.

Steve Baker now giving his backing to Ritchie Sushi.

I'm thinking that maybe Rishi will be the only one to get 100 plus and therefore could be PM tomorrow without having to go to the members.

I think that's what Graham Brady was relying on. He should have set the bar higher though.

Spookily placemarking.
Thanks for the new thread.

I think Johnson will get 100.
But I think Sunak will be much more - maybe 180-200.

The members vote in Johnson but the party will be totally ungovernable before the Privileges Committee even begin sitting. Then more sordid details come out and they spiral once again.

It's going to be a terrible mess.

I agree. the 1922 committee really needs to get their rule changes through. Its going to be catastrophic if Boris returns. I'm just hoping Boris doesn't get the 100..

tobee · 23/10/2022 15:40

I was catching up on podcasts last night and the ones after Truss quit but before Brady announced numbers requirements people estimated 120 at least would be the right amount.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 15:41

I'm just hoping Boris doesn't get the 100..

I suspect there are a lot of people working very hard this weekend to ensure he doesn’t. No decent Tory - and there are some - wants him back. They had a hard enough time getting rid of him three months ago.

tobee · 23/10/2022 15:42

Say he got the 100 and the indicative vote happened and it was down to Sunak and Johnson. Then all Mordaunt votes went to Sunak (unlikely maybe) and the members still voted Johnson that would be hopeless.

AdamRyan · 23/10/2022 15:57

Following in abject horror

Begoniasforever · 23/10/2022 16:01

Brady has always said he thinks it’s going to the members.

the fact that boris is silent is to me possibly indicating he won’t stand. But there are still 100 mps who have not indicated where they will vote. That’s a significant number. I have to assume many of them are behind boris, otherwise why say nothing now. We will know tomorrow. But boris’s total silence is odd.

tobee · 23/10/2022 16:12

Hmm possibly the silent ones behind Johnson but from what I'm reading they don't want to support him and then he doesn't stand. Why would they be silent? I mean it could be for some sort of shock but I think people being out in the open would encourage the others...? Maybe James Cleverly declaring (as he has just now) will be the momentum everyone's been waiting for...?

Incidentally, I saw talk in the last few days that Cleverly will stay on as For Sec whoever PM because he's been better than expected 🤨

itsgettingweird · 23/10/2022 16:15

I do t understand why Johnson would fly back if he didn't intend to stand?

After all he's just an MP now and doesn't need to be here. He's not even in the cabinet.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 23/10/2022 16:22

BREAKING NEWS:
BBC reporting that Johnson has approached Mordaunt to ask her to drop out of the contest and switch her endorsementst to him. She has refused.

TimWasMeanToMe · 23/10/2022 16:22

Sorry if this was covered in tge previous thread - but what kind of deal was Boris looking/hoping for?

Cleverly is certainly another way of ensuring that the next PM is worse than the previous one, so he is a perfectly sensible candidate.

Thanks @DuncinToffee

I still think you should have gone with my suggestion of Big Dog returning to his vomit.
If he gets in he'll drown them all in it.

Oh, I forgot your suggestion, sorry Mystic

I should have included a Grin Duncin - I wasn't really telling you off. Sorry if it sounded that way.

tobee · 23/10/2022 17:40

Of course the MPs who haven't declared for Johnson probably haven't heard he was coming back from holiday and maybe interested in running.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2022 17:40

Not at all, I know you meant it lighthearted! Just that it was a good title!

Dories might wamt to lie low for a bit

Ms Dorries is lucky journalists are distracted. The Culture Committee - cross party - has concluded she told us an entirely fabricated story. Misleading Select Committees is serious. I’ll be referring our report to Commons Privileges & Lords Appointments.

I think Boris won't declare until he knows he's definitely got 100+

If he doesn't reach the magic number I expect him to say that he never intended to stand anyway, rather than face the humiliation of realising that he's not as popular as he thought he was. Why else would he have come back from his holidays if it wasn't to be on the ground so to speak?

That then leaves all his backers high and dry (which will make me laugh for a very long time). Looking through the names of his backers, they are definitely the representation of the worst of the Tory party.

My sympathy levels are zero.

DuncinToffee · 23/10/2022 18:02

He didn’t fly back for

  • the London riots
  • Afghanistan's fall to the Taliban
  • Cost of Living crisis

And make good points. Lying has to start having consequences again.

It brought the Cher song gypsies tramps and thieves to mind, except changing the word gypsy to tories, and line about girl in trouble to country in trouble.
