NEW: Chris Pincher is being investigated by the standards commissioner.

Probe opened last Thursday into "actions causing significant damage to the reputation of the House as a whole, or of its members generally".

Astonishing that the Pincher investigation has only just happened really.

'Chope and Bone are dinasaurs who should have been pensioned off years ago'

What awful ageist comments.

Anyway I told you all a couple of days ago not to fret, Sunak would swing it.

Big Dog will return though at some point is my prediction.

I was listening to Christopher Chope on R4 and wondering how on earth people can be so deluded as to actually believe what he was saying. How can he believe it? It's mind blowing that we can have people that thick in government, so I can only assume they know full well it's bullshit but give so little regard for the people they are speaking to that they can say shite like that with a straight face.

I had a similar feeling when I listened to Henry Newman on The News Agents podcast last night.

Parroting that Boris Johnson

"Got all the big calls right"
"Got Brexit done"
"Covid"
Etc etc

Just repeat often enough and people will believe it. That's all these people have got.

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2022 13:11

Have I Got News For You

Boris Johnson claimed to have the backing of 102 MPs, just like he claimed to have those 40 new hospitals, 50,000 new nurses and £350million a week for the NHS.

Yes I heard that interview and marvelled as the ridiculous responses. Then I remembered Henry Newman is one of Carrie Johnson's "Gay Boys". Was supposedly being interviewed in Johnson's flat the night of the ABBA party. Never investigated.

Meanwhile, a key measure of economic health -manufacturing PMI - was out today. Anything under 50 indicates shrinking. Analysts expected the figure to be 48 this month. The actual figure came in at 45.8. Services also down from 50 to 47.5. Lowest since pandemic. Awful news. ~AA

Bloody hell, that political milquetoast Mordaunt sooooo wants to sit at the top table and have the black car ferrying her about.

I really hope Sunak sends her back where she belongs and doesn't let her haggle her way into Cabinet. She does NOT have '90 nominations'. She has 25.

itsgettingweird · 24/10/2022 13:50

I listened to Shapps on radio 4 this morning.

Annoyingly I found I actually liked what he was saying and how he was speaking.

But it was clear even the Tory's are fed up of parroting the Johnson "he got x done" when the interviewer asked a question and he said "well yes xxxxxxx." And then made a comment about not even getting Johnson's "greatest hits" into that reply! The tone of sarcasm was actually very funny.

I know he has a jaded past and isn't known for his honesty but his ability to speak well in interviews is pretty good.

@Janiie I thought it had been reported that Boris had already returned from his holiday, were those predictions incorrect?

While you are here could if you think it is acceptable for an MP to be on holiday whilst parliament is sitting?

itsgettingweird · 24/10/2022 13:59

Mourdant has withdrawn.

ClaudineClare · 24/10/2022 14:00

There will be much gnashing of racist teeth amongst the party membership.

itsgettingweird · 24/10/2022 14:00

Mordaunt even

Indeed. We had that caller on LBC, these are readers of the Spectator.
Be warned it's a horrible read

I have been monitoring the below the line comments on The Spectator for a while – call it research – and noticed over past months an uptick in racist dog whistles 1/7

Mordaunt was even haggling for jobs for her supporters as well.

I hope Sunak faced her down. They deserve nothing.

Saucery · 24/10/2022 14:06

Here’s hoping for a period of settled markets and a bit more certainty for the people in the UK. 🤞
Although slight trepidation about what Cabinet Of Hideousities he might appoint.

tobee · 24/10/2022 14:07

Anyway well done Tory party! There was no damage done at all since Boris Johnson stepped down.

Too right. I want his Cabinet to be HIS Cabinet, not the usual melted waxworks.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/10/2022 14:14

It's just a shame we have another liar as prime minister. If that's the best they've got we need a general election now.

DuncinToffee · 24/10/2022 14:16

3rd prime minister in 7 weeks, 5th in 6 years

GE now!

There is a complete dearth of talent to choose from in terms of cabinet apoointments*. What a farce this is.

*Typo, but seems apt really.

Agree. I think there will be one in the New Year.

What pain is Sunak going to rain down on us all in the meantime?
