Worried Tory backbenchers watching the markets and venting their anger to @AliFortescue:

  1. "I haven't seen this level of unease since the worst days of Boris. MPs aren't happy"
  1. "This is just shit or bust... They've been experimenting with people's lives"

Some extraordinary write ups by market analysts. Vasileios Gkionakis, Citigroup’s head of foreign exchange strategy: “The UK is now in the midst of a currency crisis.” Paul Donovan, UBS GWM: “Investors seem inclined to regard the UK Conservative Party as a doomsday cult.”

Cornettoninja · 26/09/2022 11:44

Investors seem inclined to regard the UK Conservative Party as a doomsday cult

there’s a nice sensational headline for the DM. Think they’ll make use of it?

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2022 11:45

Oof, Ed Milliband

"The Tories may believe in the markets. But the markets no longer believe in the Tories."

Cornettoninja · 26/09/2022 11:49

That’s a straight upper cut Confused

Notonthestairs · 26/09/2022 11:51

"This chart via @resi_analyst is truly frightening. Right now, at least 3000 households every day are coming out of their fixed rate mortgage. Most have been on under 2% interest. The best rate now is around double that. It may soon be treble. This is how housing markets crash."

It's flipping terrifying.

Mrs Thatcher had the backing of the city and the Bank of England in the 80s.
People may not have liked her policies, but she had the backing there to go ahead
Ms Truss doesn't seem to have this ( from what I can gather )

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2022 09:33

They are also refusing to reinstate the £20 universal credit uplift

a millionaire will be £55,000 better off & that equates to 53 years of £20 UC uplift

That puts it in perspective.

How about raising the income tax again to pay for that £20 up lift?

That's tricky down economics?!

tobee · 26/09/2022 12:30

This is not incompetence.
Is it?

Brilliant speech by Gary Neville at the Labour party conf.

"I didn't support the tax cut that was given at the end of last week. I also didn't support the removal of the cap for bankers' bonuses.
"It was a shock, to be honest with you – I shouldn't be shocked anymore.
"It didn't feel like it was reading the room in this country, when people are desperately worrying over the winter about how they are going to heat their homes, how they are going to feed their families, that bankers are potentially going to increase their bonuses or that the highest earners in this country are going to be better off.
"I don't think people in this country at the highest-earner bracket were actually expecting favour, they weren't asking for favour."
"We've been brought up in working-class families, we want good education, we want equal opportunities, we want good health – we don't want our families and our grandparents waiting two weeks to see their doctor, we want our families to be looked after and our children to have good opportunities.
"I don't think any footballer would be happy. Footballers have got a good conscience, they come from Bury and Barrow and Dudley and towns and communities like this, they are not born into wealth and so when they get to wealth they actually still respect where they came from and they are grounded."

Roussette · 26/09/2022 15:07

Incidentally..... isn't it strange that there's not a squeak from exBoris supporters or Tories on this thread anymore. I wonder why ho hum.

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2022 15:08

It’s a bit motherhood and apple pie. Has Reeves been on her feet yet?

Labour's @RachelReevesMP announces reversing 45p rate cut will pay for big boost to NHS staffing

👩‍⚕️ double number of new district nurses a year
❤️‍🩹 train more than 5,000 new health visitors
🏥create 10,000 extra nursing & midwife places
🩺 major expansion of medical school places

And more via her twitter threads

Blossomtoes · 26/09/2022 15:18

Thanks @DuncinToffee. They need to do more to sort out the NHS than just pour more money in though, even if it is ringfenced for more clinical staff.

Thread from Richard Murphy about options for the BoE. It's 6 hours old though so may be things have changed! But worth a read to get an idea of what to look for.

Kwasi was very tight lipped this morning
If this had been a Labour chancellor they would have been hung out to dry
