💥 Market turmoil forces Halifax, UK's largest mortgage lender, to temporarily withdraw all mortgage products that come with a fee.

"As a result of significant changes in the cost of funding, we're making some changes to our product range."

BOE statement

"The Bank is monitoring developments in financial markets very closely in light of the significant repricing of financial assets...we will not hesitate to change interest rates by as much as needed to return inflation to the 2% target sustainably in the medium-term"

Markets don’t seem very convinced by these interventions. Gilts and Sterling both going in the wrong respective directions in their wake.

We're in a fucking mess aren't we?

Someone needs to start a new thread, I'm away on and off so would appreciate anyone doing it at some point soon, as this will be my go-to place to look at the shitshow that's going on

Chancellor @KwasiKwarteng has set out how the Growth Plan will be delivered.

Our supply side reforms will be outlined from October, the Medium-Term Fiscal Plan will be published on 23 November & an @OBR_UK forecast has been commissioned for that date.

Kwasi was very tight lipped this morning
If this had been a Labour chancellor they would have been hung out to dry

Thread from Richard Murphy about options for the BoE. It's 6 hours old though so may be things have changed! But worth a read to get an idea of what to look for.

Thanks @DuncinToffee. They need to do more to sort out the NHS than just pour more money in though, even if it is ringfenced for more clinical staff.

It’s a bit motherhood and apple pie. Has Reeves been on her feet yet?

Brilliant speech by Gary Neville at the Labour party conf.

"I didn't support the tax cut that was given at the end of last week. I also didn't support the removal of the cap for bankers' bonuses.
"It was a shock, to be honest with you – I shouldn't be shocked anymore.
"It didn't feel like it was reading the room in this country, when people are desperately worrying over the winter about how they are going to heat their homes, how they are going to feed their families, that bankers are potentially going to increase their bonuses or that the highest earners in this country are going to be better off.
"I don't think people in this country at the highest-earner bracket were actually expecting favour, they weren't asking for favour."
"We've been brought up in working-class families, we want good education, we want equal opportunities, we want good health – we don't want our families and our grandparents waiting two weeks to see their doctor, we want our families to be looked after and our children to have good opportunities.
"I don't think any footballer would be happy. Footballers have got a good conscience, they come from Bury and Barrow and Dudley and towns and communities like this, they are not born into wealth and so when they get to wealth they actually still respect where they came from and they are grounded."
