Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

"Worth noting that govt is so confident of the appeal of #InvestmentZones (rebrand of #CharterCities), that councils are being given 24-48h to sign up with virtually no detail."

I believe it does Elodie but I doubt anyone's looking at it in our brave new world without shame. Shame is now the preserve of those children with empty lunchboxes.

On another thread I am being told that with out bankers investing like this we would not have mobile phones. One could hardly make it up!

EXCL: Mark Fullbrook is understood to have been promised by Liz Truss that his company could run the Tories’ next general election campaign if he joined her No 10 operation as chief of staff.

Pincher - "The Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) has dropped the complaint because the alleged incident did not occur on the parliamentary estate, The Sunday Times and The Observer reported"

This seems odd given they knew it happened off site at the very start!

IT HAPPENED
The pound just plunged to the lowest EVER level against the US dollar, lower even than the 1985 nadir.
Touched $1.037 before rebounding slightly. Now at $1.0569.

NOTANUM · 26/09/2022 07:19

Not a surprise at all. Every hedge fund and day trader has shorted the pound since Truss came in.
The Tory party fundraisers told them everything they needed to know. I’m sure Rees Mogg made a mint.
So brilliant for the hedge funds, awful for the UK Plc.

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2022 08:18

Government will not comment on the markets.

Sticking head in sand, that will work

Kay Burley this morning

Why is the PM's Chief of staff, Mark Fulbrook, salary being paid by his lobbying company... how do you feel about that?

Chloe Smith - "I have no emotion on the matter, Kay"

Notonthestairs · 26/09/2022 08:23

Apparently it's Corbyn's fault.

In fairness to Conservative members more than 60 000 didn't believe in Truss.

V significant via @Steven_Swinford. No new spending review despite high inflation. Spending envelope set when inflation set to peak at 4%. Now forecast at 11% in autumn (currently). So big squeeze on pub sector pay + difficult choices for schools & hospitals as budgets squeezed

it means it’s much more expensive for the government to borrow

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2022 08:53

Certainly true that the US dollar is v strong at the moment but note that the pound is also falling v fast against other currencies too.
Here it is vs the euro.
Down about 5 cents since the mini Budget

Meanwhile

"One school in Lewisham, south-east London, told the charity about a child who was “pretending to eat out of an empty lunchbox” because they did not qualify for free school meals and did not want their friends to know there was no food at home.
Community food aid groups also told the Observer this week that they are struggling to cope with new demand from families unable to feed their children. “We are hearing about kids who are so hungry they are eating rubbers in school,” said Naomi Duncan, chief executive of Chefs in Schools. “Kids are coming in having not eaten anything since lunch the day before. The government has to do something.”
www.theguardian.com/business/2022/sep/25/schools-in-england-warn-of-crisis-of-heartbreaking-rise-in-hungry-children

That's reduced me to tears. A government that can't ensure that children are fed has no legitemacy at all. Shame on the lot of them.

They are also refusing to reinstate the £20 universal credit uplift

a millionaire will be £55,000 better off & that equates to 53 years of £20 UC uplift

Anyone remember partygate and Johnson's legal advicer?

As we revealed a few weeks ago, privileges committee has drawn up a rebuttal to Lord Pannick - now published

They say his legal advice "is founded on a systemic misunderstanding of the parliamentary process and misplaced analogies with the criminal law".
