Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Might be wrong but I though PM can call an election at the time of her choosing (subject to royal prerogative). But that if the Government failed a No Confidence vote they'd have to resign and an election would be required.

@Notonthestairs Thank you, let us hope so! I thought it was now only the PM who could call an election so if there can be a vote of no confidence , the sooner the better. I want to see SIr Keir Starmer given a chance along with some of those very talented Labour mp's. I wouldn't mind a Lab/Lib Dem coalition either.

Page 12 of The Times - "One Whitehall source claimed Truss's new Downing Street operation was already showing signs of dysfunction."You've got Mark Fullbrook as chief of staff, but he's a good 20 years older than pretty much every other political adviser in the building and they've already started briefing against him."

Well he is rich, so why should he have to pay tax?

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2022 19:12

I know we talked about being run by the EEG but it does seem to have some basis in reality.

Johnson had 17 core committees. There are now half a dozen. The representation on the committees has shrunk too.

"The key domestic and economic implementation committee which used to have 20 cabinet ministers on it has been scrapped altogether. In its place is a new economic affairs committee attended by a mere__ six of Truss's inner ministerial circle".

We got 6 of them running the economy. 😬

And so it starts - after less than three weeks. Fucking Tories gonna Tory.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 24/09/2022 19:20

I also don't think we yet quite realise how much air Johnson sucked out of politics. He dominated discussions for all the wrong reasons. You can't argue policy with someone who doesn't give a shit about anything.

This is a good way of putting it.

He was also someone for whom becoming PM and going down in flames were both inevitabilities. Things that we were going to have to experience and get out of the way, because of him and because of us. As you say, that sucked a lot of energy out of the room and has done for years now. For all that he still appears to think he can come back, a bit of shit stirring and hot air from the sidelines is a huge reduction in how much space he's been occupying.

The nice thing is that Boris and his fan club heckling from the sidelines just helps cement the Tories exit. Can we call it Texit yet?

Jgw you've kept him happily amused with your amazing humour and posts across the Tory posts today.

I want to get cross with posters when they think you're actually being serious. Then I realise how worrying it is that people do actually have those POV and they assume you're one of them!

Some of the threads for the last couple of days have been brilliant. The posters keeping repeating they vote Tory because they are the party of low taxes. Brilliant.

Or because they know what a woman is. That drives me crazy.

I have tried to ask 3 different posters today what a woman is after they have said that. None of them have even tried to answer.

Labour announced last week that they would set up new courts to focus on rape cases

The former director of public prosecutions (DPP) said he initially could not believe the statistics, and asked his team to double-check them. “1.6% is staggeringly bad. And it’s an indictment on the government that the percentage is where it is.”
The most recent figures from the Crown Prosecution Service show that while there was a 63% increase in the volume of rape prosecutions from 1,557 in 2020-21 to 2,537 in 2021-2022, the conviction rate dropped from 71% to 69%.
Victims are also waiting longer for justice after half of all courts were shut by successive Conservative-led governments since 2010, with additional cuts to the number of days judges can sit on trials.

Was this mentioned on MN?

No we can't mention this, because everyone knows that Labour have no policies.

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2022 20:55

Johnson knows what a woman is.

Yet they've let rape convictions drop so low and no one will even accept they don't support woman's rights.

Woman are also statistically much more likely to be victims of DV.

When you think how close we got to Penny Mordaunt as PM.

DuncinToffee · 24/09/2022 22:09

Yvette Cooper has brought up the shocking rape conviction rates on many occasions.

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2022 22:24

Jess phillips is also good at bringing up women's issues and DV as well in parliament.

Roussette · 25/09/2022 05:39

Once a year, every year, Jess Phillips reads out the names of the women murdered by men in the HoC. Last year I believe it was 128

Ah, but the Home Secretary has told the police to cut murders by 20%, so it will be a shorter list next year.

I really don't know why previous Home Secretaries haven't been as bold as to tell the police to do that before.

Roussette · 25/09/2022 06:45

And talking of Jess Phillips... she has tweeted this. It makes me feel sick too.

A source who was present at a dinner attended by hedge-fund managers a week ago revealed: “They were all supporters of Truss and every one of them was shorting the pound.”
