Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Jess phillips is also good at bringing up women's issues and DV as well in parliament.

I like Jess Phillips.

They need to wheel her and Rachel reeves out more often.

Labour has some good strong capable woman in their cabinet.

Yvette cooper is brilliant too.

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/09/2022 08:21

I'm not surprised to hear about them shorting the pound.
One of the reasons for people voting for Brexit was because of the lack of accountability and transparency of expenses being paid out from Brussels.
It seems that the politicians have got off one gravy train and straight onto another. One that they are avoiding scrutiny on by abusing our parliamentary system.

Every single mp with questions to answer that refuses to respond and take responsibility should be jailed until they do.

Anyone who has behaved fraudulently by abusing the system- e.g. shorting the pound or misuse of procurement cards should be jailed and all assets frozen and returned to the state.

DowningStreetParty · 25/09/2022 09:17

That hedge fund behaviour is so sickening and selfish as to be actually psychopathic. People will suffer and die at the levels of poverty and stress this government’s putting them under.
Just from normal fucking every year winter cold because they’re so terrified about their bills they won’t put the heating on and they will then die from normal infections because they won’t have been able to afford to eat properly.
All that the old people I know can talk about is how frightened they are and how scared they are of this awful government. I live in a Tory area. The Lib Dem’s just need to make a little bit more noise and they will clean up. Just do something visually appealing and visible beyond issuing the normal policy statements that will get reported on. People are absolutely desperate for help.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 09:20

Mick Lynch is on now with Sophy Ridge , one of the few people who speaks some sense.

DowningStreetParty · 25/09/2022 09:29

Also glad to see Labour putting out some woman friendly policies regarding rape convictions. The Tories offer fuck all for women- the Boris johnson-era women’s health strategy seems to have left Downing Street with him. Therese Coffey doesn’t give a shit about anything.

So while I have felt alienated by Labour’s TWAW, which will bite them on the arse- TWATW which is perfectly fine and most importantly accurate and doesn’t take anything away from women- I will continue to vote for Labour. With much more enthusiasm if they promote good women.

Cooper or Reeve for leader come the next GE. Starmer has steadied the party which was much needed but he’s yesterday’s man now, he embodies the reaction to Corbyn which we have all nationally moved on from. Everything pre pandemic feels like yesteryear now I am afraid.
Labour need a woman with brains and charisma to lead the next GE campaign focused on the economy, and that campaign should be starting now.

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2022 09:31

Someone been reading MN?

Nice to see Starmer dropping the swears. Trickle down economics is a pisstake. Next time call Truss a fucker and the election is in the bag mate.

As much as the party conference season feels like a distraction from all the massive issues to deal with, and holding the awful government to account….
I want to see how the big 3 parties set out their stalls. Labour and the LibDems have never had a better chance to properly cut through to voters, I really, really hope they can finally make it.

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2022 09:35

Starmer on tax sets out the policy. Tells @bbclaurak would reverse the scrapping of the top rate 45p band. AND says he supports the 19p income tax cut

And will impose a windfall tax

DowningStreetParty · 25/09/2022 09:36

Yes Kier! Grin

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2022 09:45

Labour will also announce a Green Growth Plan, something to keep an eye out for.

Notonthestairs · 25/09/2022 09:59

That Times article -

"Yet interest rates are now expected to rise as high as 5 per cent, driving up the cost of mortgages for a generation used to low-cost borrowing. “Whatever people gain in tax cuts is going to be wiped out by higher mortgages,” a former No 10 official said. “Middle England got nothing.”
"Ministers are expected to lay a negative statutory instrument reversing the rules that ban the sale of sweets and chocolate near checkouts. Proposals to scrap the EU’s 48-hours-a-week working time directive are also on the table."

Plus proposals to change planning restrictions and lift the ban on live exports of animals 😬

A free for all for people with money, and no protection for those without. Conservative strap line.

the80sweregreat · 25/09/2022 10:05

Why are they airbrushing the borrowing they are doing to pay for these cuts ?
Why isn't this mentioned more ?

Notonthestairs · 25/09/2022 10:06

Interesting hint of MORE tax cuts to come.
@KwasiKwarteng tells @bbclaurak “There's more to come. We’ve only been here 19 days. I want to see over the next year people retain more of their income."

Quite.

KK said he wouldn't put a limit on Government borrowing.

Meanwhile

"One school in Lewisham, south-east London, told the charity about a child who was “pretending to eat out of an empty lunchbox” because they did not qualify for free school meals and did not want their friends to know there was no food at home.
Community food aid groups also told the Observer this week that they are struggling to cope with new demand from families unable to feed their children. “We are hearing about kids who are so hungry they are eating rubbers in school,” said Naomi Duncan, chief executive of Chefs in Schools. “Kids are coming in having not eaten anything since lunch the day before. The government has to do something.”

Honestly I want to cry with relief seeing Labour come out with the stuff. Thank god. These morally corrupt Trussbots are absolute terrifying.

Although the EU sets tax policy was a new one on me.

I agree.

And I agree reeves or cooper would be amazing.

Phillips is also a strong contender.

And I honestly think Labour will clean up if they put a woman in charge of the party. Will do so much for their stance on woman's rights and also take away the Tory line of attack about them never having a woman leader or making PM.

Notonthestairs · 25/09/2022 13:48

This doesn't tell us anything we don't know but thought it was worth reading - Guardian interview with Ken Clarke last month (tweeted by Andrew Sparrow)

As a former chancellor of the exchequer, what do you think of the idea, put forward by Liz Truss in the Tory leadership campaign, that tax cuts will trigger economic growth?

The simplistic idea that tax cuts will automatically produce growth is nonsense. Everybody would do it if that worked. There’s a slight touch of the Argentinian or Venezuelan government about it. This is not a time for tax cuts because we have incurred enormous public expenditure, which I supported, to stave off the worst effects of Covid-19, leading to enormous public debts. Tax cuts will stimulate growth in demand, but the problems are with the difficulties in supply, so they will push inflation further up.

Is it even legal to make a ton of money when you have information of a deliberate shortening of the pound ?
Does it not come under corruption , like insider share dealing etc?
@DowningStreetParty I'm in tears at your post about the little one pretending to eat out of an empty lunch box.
