If I tell you some podcasts I've liked, could anyone recommend more that are similar please?

I love podcasts but only of a certain genre. The criteria is:

  • a true story
  • that builds over the episodes rather than one story each episode
  • not too grisly
  • and that preferably reaches a conclusion (have listened to a few mystery type ones recently that are just frustrating because there's just endless speculation and no answers)

Some I have really liked are:

  • last man standing
  • I am not a monster
  • the fake heiress
  • the dropout
  • dr death
  • flight 149
  • Tiffany Dover is dead
  • wind of change.

Does anyone have any suggestions that fit the above please?

The only one I have to add is Immaculate Deception.

BrilliantGreenFlamingo · 08/10/2022 08:20

@NorthFaceofthelaundrypile that one was brilliant. Just listened to it. Really fucking dark tho.

The cruelty-a child unclaimed. Bbc sounds! Binged it in a day. Real life mystery.

I haven’t listened yet but the people who made the Battersea Poltergeist have a new series, The Witch Farm.

Ooh yes! It took a completely different direction to what I expected, but I listened to it all in one day.
Assume Nothing series can be a bit hit & miss (the dramatised ones aren't all that great IMO), but Obscene is incredible.
Also really into the Bible John BBC series.
Unravel has 4 series so far, and is really well done.

The one about the Murdaugh Murders. No conclusion yet as it’s ongoing IRL, and you have to get past the presenter’s vocal fry. But it’s very evocative of that part of America and that slice of Southern society.

Watching this with interest

Something Was Wrong

There's about 10 seasons now and many of the stories build slowly over a few episodes. Each of them is a true story of a different woman who gets into a situation (relationship/friendship etc) and discovers the person is not who they say they are. Gripping stuff!

FeralWitch · 18/10/2022 02:38

I agree with Something Was Wrong, although, in the first story, I thought the woman and her family were nearly as weird and stalkers as the wrong ‘un!

FeralWitch · 18/10/2022 02:38

*stalkery

Nat6999 · 18/10/2022 04:08

I love This is Politics by Alastair Campbell & Rory Stewart, I have learnt more about politics from them than any newspaper, TV news or social media.

HailMary1988 · 18/10/2022 18:18

I've just listened to "The Boy in the Woods" on BBC Sounds. If fulfills all the criteria set out in the OP. Such a sad story, but the podcast is really sensitive. The presenter has interviews with a lot of the key people - his mum, the police, jurors, scientists who worked the original case etc.

While the crime story part is compelling it's also quite a sobering look at the challenges faced by some children and families and how little Rikki was failed by so many people.

Tunnel 29 on BBC Sounds. True story of a tunnel they dug between east and west Germany in the middle of Berlin.

magaluf1999 · 22/10/2022 12:46

Can i tell you a secret-by the guardian. Real life serialised prolific stalking case.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 26/10/2022 18:33

Thank you for the Tunnel29 and My Sweet Bobby recommendations. Really enjoyed both and dog got some extra long walks so I could finish them off, so DDog happy too!

Who the hell is hamish.
About an aussie conman.
By the australian. Have listened to a few by them and the standard of journalism is very good.

DesMoulinsRouge · 30/10/2022 21:07

Thought of another one on BBC sounds

The Strange Death of Innes Ewart

LadyOfTheCanyon · 31/10/2022 05:03

The Assume Nothing series on BBC sounds from Radio Ulster is really good.
Not all of them have a conclusion but some do ( some are ongoing enquiries)
A range of topics, some are dramatised rather than reportage style, which is not really to my taste but the journalism behind it is solid enough to carry those ones.

VittysCardigan · 18/11/2022 08:14

Just discovered You must remember this. All about old Hollywood.

Yes I agree Assume Nothing is very good.

Coming back to this to say that I have just listened to Con Juan which fits all of the criteria in my OP. A remarkable story that develops over a number of episodes and reaches an incredible conclusion. Highly recommend it!

Will try that one next

buddhasbelly · 12/12/2022 18:58

American Scandal - there’s about 40 series - each series has circa 5 episodes of about 45-1hr in length. Topics covered including the kidnapping of patty Hearst, Iran contra, lance armstrong, Nixon scandal, . All v good

American History tellers - as above but moments in American history inc Tulsa Race Massacre, women’s suffrage in America - again v interesting

S-Town if not already mentioned

Your Own Backyard

if the top two appeal the same guy has also done a mammoth podcast of the history of each American president and their path to power- it’s really fascinating - American Elections Wicked Game

The casual criminalist. Very good show and loads of episodes to enjoy
