If I tell you some podcasts I've liked, could anyone recommend more that are similar please?

I love podcasts but only of a certain genre. The criteria is:

  • a true story
  • that builds over the episodes rather than one story each episode
  • not too grisly
  • and that preferably reaches a conclusion (have listened to a few mystery type ones recently that are just frustrating because there's just endless speculation and no answers)

Some I have really liked are:

  • last man standing
  • I am not a monster
  • the fake heiress
  • the dropout
  • dr death
  • flight 149
  • Tiffany Dover is dead
  • wind of change.

Does anyone have any suggestions that fit the above please?

If you like a bit of history, I am listening to a podcaster who has a stash of love letters from her great great grandparents and is telling the story of their life. It's called My Love Letter Time Machine.

‘Shreds’ on bbc sounds - about the wrongful conviction of the Cardiff 5
excellent journalism

Apollo 13 on BBC sounds?

Just listened to the last episode of the Bible John podcast by Audrey Gillan on BBC Sounds. It's definitely not a binge listen series because each episode really throws up so much to think about, and you do need to take a break to absorb the details. It's incredible journalism, and I sobbed my heart out for the last ten minutes of it.

I’m listening to that. It’s so good but a hard listen.

@PriamFarrl Audrey Gillan has done a couple of other really amazing podcast series, and they are all hard listens. She deserves to be better known as a journalist, she really brings the people into focus. The last episode is heartbreaking, but absolutely beautiful.

Adding to my own list. I am enjoying the Estonian at the moment. It's about the sinking of the ship and what caused it.

Is that "the secret history of the Estonia"?

PseudoBadger · 16/02/2023 06:19

If anyone has audible I am currently listening to 'Edge of Reality" which is about reality TV and the damage it does to the contestants.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 16/02/2023 07:02

Lost in Larrimah is great, but there is no conclusion.

@PseudoBadger yes that's the one!

So happy to find this thread!

The difficulty now is choosing which one to start with.

BBC sounds Please Protect Abraham

BankOfMaeve · 17/02/2023 07:32

The Cruelty: A Child Unclaimed, was very good.

BertieBotts · 17/02/2023 07:34

I listen to podcasts when cleaning the house and on public transport.

I've not listened to many like this but recently I've been listening to The Tavistock: Inside the gender clinic. It's not really on a side, it just wants to tell the story, I think it's quite good.

Behind the Bastards is also good, though usually one episode per bastard. Sometimes short serials 2-4 eps.

Another vote for The Lady Vanishes - doesn’t come to a conclusion but that’s because there’s still new stuff being unearthed and it’s really fascinating (as well as very sad - but the podcast has actually helped unearth stuff that is really helping her daughter come to terms with what happened too so it’s not just voyeuristic).

I'd never come across this story. It is intriguing! All those identities. I feel so sorry for her son.

WarningToTheCurious · 17/02/2023 09:23

Agree that Bible John is a good listen,

Obscene: The Dublin Scandal is intriguing too - about murders in Dublin in 1982.

Coroico97 · 25/02/2023 17:31

Am listening to Stolen Hearts. Very good.

HRTQueen · 25/02/2023 18:27

I have been listening to Crime Analyst it’s brilliant, The host Laura Richards has done some amazing work for women and girls and raising awards and deeper understanding of domestic violence and coercive control.

The episodes on the Sophie Toscan du Plantier are very interesting. I found the main suspect, the murderer imo, got far too much air time on West Cork it became his show such a nasty arrogant narcissistic character who has a history of extreme violence towards women

Coroico97 · 25/02/2023 18:56

Yes agree re: Crime Analyst. Her episodes on Savile were v good.

CaveMum · 25/02/2023 20:19

@HRTQueen and @Coroico97 if you like Crime Analyst then try Real Crime Profile which Laura is a Co-presenter on. The show has been running for about 5 years so plenty of episodes to get through. Their breakdown of the Nicole Simpson-Brown murder was incredibly detailed and they look at plenty of other high profile cases, both recent and past. They don’t just cover murders either, they deep dive on the likes of Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson, Woody Allen, etc too.
