DH thinks I was rude but I disagree

At our local pub my usual tipple is rose wine. Almost every time we go they want to flog us the bottle and I always say no thanks.
I tend to have a large glass to start and then a couple of small ones with ice & soda to 'tip in'
Anyway today they tried to push the bottle and as usual I said no thanks to which the lass helping out behind the bar ( not even staff) said "do you know just how much wine you drink? You would save money by buying the bottle "
I replied "judgmental much?"

You were rude.

CavernousScream · 12/06/2022 20:24

Yeah, you were quite rude and it also sounds like she might be right and you’d be better off buying the bottle?

Frogface8 · 12/06/2022 20:25

Yes sounds like you were rude! Poor girl sounds like she was actually trying to do you a favour not judge you, did she touch a nerve perhaps?!

MidwichCuckoo · 12/06/2022 20:25

She phrased it wrongly, but probably was trying to be helpful and save you money.

PuffinMcStuffin · 12/06/2022 20:25

You were rude, they were trying to do you a favour.

dudsville · 12/06/2022 20:25

It's an odd interaction on both parts.

Gigia · 12/06/2022 20:25

I think you were both rude tbh

OvOvO · 12/06/2022 20:26

DH thinks I was rude but I think she was rude. Nobody tries to push a fucking barrel on lager drinkers or a whole gin bottle on gin drinkers- I'm really pissed off and it wasn't even staff just one of their mates helping out!

OP posts:
AtomicBlondeRose · 12/06/2022 20:26

I think it was slightly unnecessary- I think what they were saying was that for what you spend on “a large glass to start and then a couple of small ones with ice & soda” you could spend less and get the whole bottle - you might not have realised how much they add up to compared to the bottle cost so they’re trying to help you out. Let’s face it, it’s not a bar person’s place to judge how much people drink, those drinkers keep them in a job! And anywhere I’ve known the bar staff drink as much as the customers when they’re not working!

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 20:26

Didn’t she just mean it was false economy not to buy the bottle, she worded it pretty crack handedly though. Rose is gross so that makes you UR 😋

Happierthanever91 · 12/06/2022 20:27

It is rude to say ' do you know just how much wine you drink'. Not sure why everyone so far hasn't said anything about that.

I'd be bothered by that too.

I probably wouldn't have made the comment back but I get why you did

However, money wise she is probably right if you're going through nearly a full bottle anyway

DorotheaHomeAlone · 12/06/2022 20:27

You’re drinking 150mls shirt of a bottle each time so financially might be better off buying the bottle. That’s literally all she was saying. Yes, you were rude.

sillysmiles · 12/06/2022 20:27

You were rude. And also weird to not just buy the bottle.

honeylulu · 12/06/2022 20:27

If its 250ml and then 125ml x 2 then that is 500ml (the measures might be larger). A bottle (750ml) is bound to cost less than those three measures and you could take it home to finish if you don'twant it all in one evening. Nothing judgemental about it. Common sense.

fyn · 12/06/2022 20:28

I can’t understand why you just don’t buy a bottle if you are drinking it…

Sleepingsatellite1 · 12/06/2022 20:28

Did she really say ‘just how much you drink?’ And if she doesn’t usually work there how would she know?

WeAreBob · 12/06/2022 20:29

They're right. You're drinking a whole bottle worth but paying twice the price because you're buying by the glass.

They're right. Stop denying how much your drink and just buy the bottle.

You were rude. It sounds like you're trying to lid yourself over his much you're going to drink so you order by the glass, but you're still drinking a lot each time. You're not fooling anyone. You'd save a lot of money just buying the bottle.

BlancmanegeBunny · 12/06/2022 20:30

You were rude! Wine is cheaper by the bottle. Beer and spirits are not so they don't suggest buying a bottle or a barrel.

OvOvO · 12/06/2022 20:31

The bottle costs a whole 50 pence less than buying drinks singularly - plus they don't provide an ice bucket so I would be effectively drinking warm wine and saving 50p 🤷‍♂️

OP posts:
TheSmallAssassin · 12/06/2022 20:31

If the large glass is 250ml and the two small glasses are 175ml then it's still not a whole bottle, so it might be cheaper, but what are you going to do with the last 150ml?

Mostmarriedcouple · 12/06/2022 20:31

Bar person was rude. You are fine.

Lager or gin drinkers won’t be drinking anywhere near a barrel or a bottle during their visit though. Sounds like you do drink approaching a bottle…

She didn’t raise the point in the most elegant or articulate of ways… but you were rude, and are frankly odd in your refusal (reminds me of my teenage son who just doubles down on the most ridiculous of points for no reason).

Except there’s no comparison between a barrel of larger vs a couple of glasses and the approx three quarters of a bottle of wine which you drink.

And you seem particularly touchy when the amount you drank was brought to your attention. Do you think you drink too much?

OvOvO · 12/06/2022 20:33

A small glass in this pub is 125 ml not 175 - that would be medium.

Not providing an ice bucket is quite the drip feed…
