DH thinks I was rude but I disagree

At our local pub my usual tipple is rose wine. Almost every time we go they want to flog us the bottle and I always say no thanks.
I tend to have a large glass to start and then a couple of small ones with ice & soda to 'tip in'
Anyway today they tried to push the bottle and as usual I said no thanks to which the lass helping out behind the bar ( not even staff) said "do you know just how much wine you drink? You would save money by buying the bottle "
I replied "judgmental much?"

But I dare drink wine?
Obviously I'm a raging fucking alkie!

I don’t know many pubs that sell beer by the barrel or gin by the bottle but it’s very common to order a bottle of wine. Especially when you drink almost a bottle anyway.

I do think you have an issue with alcohol which is why she has touched a nerve.
Most people would have just said yes or no.

Johnnysgirl · 12/06/2022 21:27

You said twice that you'd save 50p if you bought the bottle 🤷🏻‍♀️

Came here to say this.. how is it £19? You've already said its a 50p difference?

PlantSpider · 12/06/2022 21:31

She phrased it rudely. And the way you replied was a bit narky but maybe it will get the point across. If she’s aware of what you typically drink as a regular then she’s also aware that you always turn down a bottle. That should be enough for her to stop asking you. Particularly as it’s no skin off their nose - actually beneficial to them.

OvO · 12/06/2022 21:28

stares at ops username 😒

I don’t think you were rude. Not polite either but I’d get fed up of them pushing the bottle and sometimes blunt is best.

Ohh, I always thought it was you with an odd new nc 🤣

bakebeans · 12/06/2022 21:32

Yes you were sounding rude.

as a wine drinker. If you are buying that much in the pub you may as well buy the bottle and take the bottle home (they usually allow you to take the bottle as you have purchased the bottle)
large 250ml + 2 small at 1.25ml per glass is 500ml and there is 750ml in a bottle.
most venues charge more per glass. I had 2 large wines today for a meal which would have been £14.50 but it was only an extra £3 for the bottle!

I think if you only want to drink 500ml
of wine, you should have that choice. I suspect it's more because they never sell
the last bit before it goes off and are fed up throwing it away

Maverickess · 12/06/2022 21:34

Seems like the helper behind the bar has touched a nerve........... I have had this reaction before when offering a bottle to customers who are ordering more than one glass of the same wine, especially if they're going to eat, because it's cheaper and pointing out a cheaper alternative is usually seen as good customer service.

"Do you think I'm some sort of wino or something?! How dare you infer that I would drink a full bottle of wine in one sitting!"

I couldn't give a flying fuck about your alcohol consumption, you're really not that important to me. I'm offering the bottle because you'll likely whinge if I don't and you do actually go on to drink a full bottle or near one and you realise you could have had that cheaper, you'll then be accusing me of profiteering. It also switches the onus off me and onto you around getting drunk and me still serving you, I serve you a bottle in individual glasses then I can be held responsible if you do something stupid while drunk, you buy the bottle and drink it then that's your choice to do so and your responsibility if you do something stupid.

Young whippersnapper coming in here and stealing names. Down with this sort of thing!

I actually lost my OvO name for a long time as crappy MN system wouldnt allow a change back to a 3 letter username (4 letters was the new minimum) but now the new, also crappy MN, is letting me use it again. 😁

I take it back @OvOvO . You are rude

bringbacksideburns · 12/06/2022 21:37

You overreacted on a massive scale but rest assured they will remember you in future. You sound like a lovely friendly customer!

Are people really this prickly? Have you ever worked behind a bar? They probably mention a bottle a lot to people. You don’t have to take it so personally!

Misty84 · 12/06/2022 21:37

You weren’t rude OP, it’s annoying to constantly be pushed a bottle that you don’t want. It’s your choice how you like to drink your wine.

SirChenjins · 12/06/2022 21:39

I hope the bar staff ask you if you want a bottle every single time you’re in there from now on.

BadNomad · 12/06/2022 21:41

She wasn't staff?

Yes, you were rude. She was just doing her (or not her?) job of trying to sell more drinks to people.

YerAWizardHarry01 · 12/06/2022 21:41

Anyone wanna come back when OP has sobered up calmed down?

onlythreenow · 12/06/2022 21:41

@Johnnysgirl 50 pence if I wanted 3 x individual 250 ml glasses which I do not want are you really that fucking dense?

Yep, definitely rude!

Mummybud · 12/06/2022 21:35

I haven’t even read the whole thread and think you’re rude.

Snap, & I'd take the bottle if girls night probably one each 😆

OvOvO · 12/06/2022 21:43

@OvO how long have you been here because I've been here for around 18 years and I have not 'stolen' your username. I've had about eleventybillion usernames since hacker gate and this was a just the latest so rest assured you will have it all to yourself again when I decide to name change or I may not to piss you off seeing as I am so aggressive

OP posts:
SmileyClare · 12/06/2022 21:44

Your responses are rude and aggressive on here. It seems like you want to lash out for whatever reason.
Get over yourself and stop stewing over a trivial pub interaction. Nothing worse than an angry drunk Op.

Jagley · 12/06/2022 21:49

It's just standard up selling that staff are told to do, and it works out cheaper anyway. Yes it gets annoying but you were still rude.

SmileyClare · 12/06/2022 22:11

This is one reason bar work is so shit; punters kicking off over a perceived slight or some knock to their ego..fuelled by alcohol and a contempt for serving staff.

Sally872 · 12/06/2022 22:12

Rude. Even if upselling they are only doing a job.

It was an offer that may have been better value if you were going to 750ml of wine not an insult or accusation that you are drinking too much.

No thank you is all you had to say.
