We’ve moved near an Aldi (I don’t drive so have to walk to do grocery shopping) and I’m besides myself with excitement.

Can you tell me your top buys if you shop there? I’ve heard good things about the chocolate…

Their jaffa cakes/jaffa cake bars are better than actual jaffa cakes. They taste more citrusy.

Raininglemons · 08/03/2022 23:29

Personally not a fan of their fresh food to be honest. Veg turns really quick and often lacks flavour. Meat just looks unappealing. But I do use a butchers and veg box scheme weekly.
Purchased a soup once and binned it. Was awful and bland. Kids did not like the smoothies or yoghurts. I don’t seem to have had much luck with the fresh food but I’m not open to trying the butter and cheese as other members have suggested.

Products we buy…

Coconut milk - it’s a bargain!
The pouches of ready cooked quinoa, beans and lentils etc.
Nappies
Wipes
Binbags
Breadsticks
Olive or rapeseed oil
Non bio tablets
Hazelnut chocolate

I used to buy some of the baby snacks but outgrown those now.
Some of the special aisle branded food bits can be good value
Tinned tomatoes, beans, chickpeas etc.
It’s a really good place to fill up your dry stores!

Throughabushbackwards · 09/03/2022 01:35

Biodegradable baby wipes
All of the chocolate
The cheap wonky vegetables
Their "posh" pizzas
The middle aisle of random stuff

Furries · 09/03/2022 02:04

@SaveWaterDrinkGin

I only go in for the bakery section, plus the chocolate and biscuits.

Oh, and ski goggles and the odd chainsaw 😂

Blimey - how many chainsaws have you now got in your collection? 🤣
Suzi888 · 09/03/2022 02:07

Fruit and veg always much nice than Tesco and Asda.
We do a shop at Sainsbury and Aldi, I can’t personally get everything I want in Aldi (dog food for one).

Hebeee · 09/03/2022 03:11

We shop in Aldi and Tesco (can't get everything in Aldi and don't have any supermarkets nearby except a Lidl, which imho is only good for the bakery counter 🙄).

Favourite Aldi items for us are - sourdough crumpets (better than any other supermarket crumpets 😋), specially selected Swiss roll - particularly the Sicilian lemon and triple chocolate, pesto, softest quilted toilet rolls (DH refuses to buy anything else now!), specially selected paella/patatas bravas, specially selected vegetable crisps, sausage rolls, moser roth chocolate truffles.

We also stock up on tinned/dry goods etc but aren't keen on the choice of fruit and veg, which is often poor in ours - especially maris pipers - and we don't tend to buy much meat there, preferring Tesco.

mathanxiety · 09/03/2022 03:17

I'm in the US so my impressions may not count, but I love the candles, the chocolate, and the frozen veg.

Nice wine selection - I've bought a good deal of Malbec that was really good.

Lacura creams, excellent and great value.

Snazzyjazzpants · 09/03/2022 05:55

@cobblers123

I buy their Wonky fruit, blueberries and grapes, much cheaper and I don't really care about whether some of the fruit is different sizes, it all goes down the same way.
Apparently it all comes out the same way too.
Nevermindthefragglerocks · 09/03/2022 06:38

Crispy duck with pancakes
Non-bio laundry liquid
Nappy pants
Baby wipes
Toddler cereal bars and adult ones (a lot cheaper than branded)
L'Oréal style shampoo for 89p!

To be honest the list is endless! I rarely go there for a full shop but go regularly to stock up on these items

AlwaysLatte · 09/03/2022 06:46

I got some really good fillet steaks in there the other day. I only popped in for milk but I'm thinking of trying Aldi now for more shopping. If only they delivered!

Seasidemumma77 · 09/03/2022 07:12

@BeaLola

Can someone take a pic of the butter with crystals please - never seen this in ours , thanks
No picture but it's a dark blue wrapper, block not tub.
lollipoprainbow · 09/03/2022 07:14

My dd adores their Ham and pineapple pizzas
The mini American pancakes
Wines are really cheap and nice
Hash browns identical to McDonald's
I finally managed to get some of the caviar moisturiser and it's lovely smells so nice too
The scented candles love the lime and basil
Packs of cokes are cheaper
Crunchy French bread pizzas
Tomato and cheese pasta ready meal

Love Aldi!

EvilPea · 09/03/2022 07:24

The plastic pots of chocolate millionaires / rocky road
Like you get in m and s. The millionaires is incredible. Normally at the bottom of the cake section

FuggyPidding · 09/03/2022 07:30

Try everything!!
I love an Aldi shop - great quality & fab prices. I find their products are just as good- in some cases, better- than branded stuff, and way cheaper!

I especially like the dark chocolate and their cheese & onion crisps! But I don't shop any where else. Enjoy! :)

backintothefire · 09/03/2022 08:42

Apple and caramel sponge pudding

Oh god I'd forgotten about this - had some the other week...delicious!

ScribblingPixie · 09/03/2022 09:41

@EvilPea

Oh the bathroom cleaner is like nothing else you can buy. It’s utterly magic. Zero water marks and I’m in a really really hard water area.
What's it called, EvilPea? Liquid or cream? I need this!
CaveMum · 09/03/2022 09:49

Around Christmas time (it only ever seems to be in stock at Christmasxin our area) make sure to buy Ballycastle, which is the Aldi version of Baileys. It’s not as cheap as it used to be but still significantly cheaper than Baileys and, to me, tastes better!

emmathedilemma · 09/03/2022 10:31

I forgot the organic prosecco!!

EvilPea · 09/03/2022 10:48

@ScribblingPixie
Literally bathroom cleaner. It shares the display box with the kitchen cleaner. It’s really good, it’s often sold out so you have to grab it when you see it.
Quick spray and wipe with a microfibre cloth. Done.
I always recommend it on the house keeping posts, no one ever listens. They end up using weird concoctions and 25 different sprays.

Chocolate.
Lacto free milk

Of course they count!
I think most of the things aldi sells are universal anyway.

ScribblingPixie · 09/03/2022 11:07

Brilliant, EvilPea. Thanks very much. I'm in a hard water area too and I just can't be arsed to keep on top of the limescale.

2Gen · 09/03/2022 11:12

I discovered Aldi over 20 ears ago and ever since then, their thin forzen pizzas have been our Saturday night tea because they are just the nicest frozen pizzas we've ever tried and their so cheap. They don't skimp on the cheese either!
I used to just buy one cheese and tomato and share it with my son when he was small. Since he's got big and bold, he like the pepperoni one and it's even cheaper than the cheese and tomato! My husband and me sometimes share a C&T or have one each! The deep pan C&T ones are very nice too! Very occasionally I splash out on a chicken and peppers "Take- Away" one and I can never eat more than half as it's so big, but it is really nice and only costs about 2.50 Euros!
I would strongly recommend you try one! And don't keep them in the oven too long; they do cook really quickly!! Stick to the instructions!

whoruntheworldgirls · 09/03/2022 11:12

@cherrytopcake

Ready, Set…Cook! Thai Green Curry Kit. It's amazing and costs £1.59. We add frozen prawns & fresh carrots (or green beans or peppers). Cook the rice. Quick dinner. Tastes amazing. I prefer this to a takeaway thai green curry (or at least just as good).
The Pad Thai kit is gorgeous! As is the Thai Red Curry
