We’ve moved near an Aldi (I don’t drive so have to walk to do grocery shopping) and I’m besides myself with excitement.

Can you tell me your top buys if you shop there? I’ve heard good things about the chocolate…

I do most of my shopping in either ALDI or LIDL (both next to each other here). I think most things are pretty good but I always try to get their malted bloomer loaf (in a papery bag) and their organic Pinot Grigio. The one thing I don't like from either is the balsamic vinegar, I think it's probably worth spending more on that. It's a question of trying stuff really.

whoruntheworldgirls · 09/03/2022 11:26

I go to Aldi every week but i think i need to save this thread to give me ideas to branch out of my standard purchases :-D

EvilPea · 09/03/2022 11:29

@ScribblingPixie

Brilliant, EvilPea. Thanks very much. I'm in a hard water area too and I just can't be arsed to keep on top of the limescale.
I know that feeling. It’s relentless isn’t it! In lockdown I couldn’t get it, I could only get flash and fancy brands, 2-3 times the price and I still needed like scale stuff and it never looked clean.

I still use cif for the bath once a week and every 6 months + have to scrub the grout. But that’s it.
It’s magic.
I hope it brings you as much joy as me
Grin

The only things I'm not keen on in Aldi is the gravy granules ( oily) and the chicken ( tasteless and watery), washing tablets and powders ( clothes don't smell fresh after washing, not as good as the brands) but everything else is good quality.

MrsGHarrison87 · 09/03/2022 11:29

The wines are great for the price. I like the rosès.

LadyCatStark · 09/03/2022 11:36

Most things but things that’s stand out are:

skin on fries
Fake Mars bars/ Snickers/ Twixes/ Milky Ways, they’re better than the real things IMHO.
Actually any chocolate.
The fake Jo Malone candles etc.
Vitamins.
If you have a dog, their Langhams range of dog food.

The only thing we don’t really like is their chicken.

Arghhconfused · 09/03/2022 11:40

TINNED cherry tomatoes! Amazing. Their chocolate, especially the rum and raisin. Puddings are good. The only issue I have is that their meat often goes off before its best before date. So I don't buy meat from there. Their melt in the middle salmon fishcakes are amazing too.

user1499609760 · 09/03/2022 14:20

Turns out DH bought the cod & chorizo fishcakes this week, so we’re trying them tonight! Think they were mentioned here.

fussychica · 09/03/2022 15:52

Just back and they appear to no longer be stocking my washing tabletsAngry.

Only wanted a few other bits so went to get a basket rather than a trolley. They were so filthy I carried everything in my arms. Not keeping up any covid cleaning then. Looked like they'd never, ever been washedShock.

On the plus side if anyone wants a heated airer and cover they are on sale for £25 which appears to be a total bargain. I have had a Lakeland one for years so resisted the temptation Grin

Isseywith3witchycats · 09/03/2022 16:39

their wonky veg range is surprisingly good quality and cheaper than even their normal veg range especially the potatoes
as people have said try things and thats the best way of finding out what you like and dont like, we dont buy the baked beans as my Oh likes branston ones or the essentials tomatoes the labelled cuccio ones are very good , the curry sauces with the spices at the top are excellent , the deli section is all top quality we like the valley spreadable butter which is anchor like

tulips27 · 09/03/2022 17:58

@fussychica same issue here with the baskets, both Aldi and Lidl have rank baskets. It was good during covid when they actually cleaned them. I have thought about contacting environmental health because they look like a health hazard. 🤢

Rizzoli123 · 09/03/2022 18:44

Disco biscuits

ScribblingPixie · 09/03/2022 19:05

Thanks, EvilPea. I'm heading down tomorrow with high hopes.

Whilst you are in there buy the Surface Cleaner - about 70p - it is brilliant for doing the kitchen tops.
Hellorhighwater · 09/03/2022 22:46

Oh, maple butter, with the jam. Lovely maple flavour, but not drippy,s so you can spread it on crumpets etc.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 09/03/2022 22:57

The kids love the frozen- hash browns, hot and spicy chicken strips, salt and pepper chips/ fries.
Frozen Cornetto ice creams, mini magnum type ice creams. Frozen peperoni pizza.
Lacura Rejuvalate face cream.
Salted caramel chocolate, dark orange chocolate.
Prosseco, white wines and Argentinian red Malbec.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 09/03/2022 23:00

Bramwell tinned tomato soup, as good as Heinz.
Cheese croquets in the chill isle.

Sswhinesthebest · 09/03/2022 23:02

Smoked gammon joints when boiled, are melt in the mouth and much better than tescos.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2022 01:19

Where I am in the US the tinned beans and tomatoes are also excellent, and way cheaper than elsewhere. They also sell tins of pumpkin for a fraction of the price of branded pumpkin. I always stock up between Thanksgiving and Christmas and then we have pumpkin muffins and the odd pie throughout the year.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2022 01:23

And YYY to ski goggles and the odd chainsaw 😂

Also metal shelves for all my kitchen bits and pieces, clothes racks, and handy bathroom storage.

I have bought several dutch ovens for myself and family members for at least $10 less than the cheapest available in TJMaxx. The quality is excellent.

Dutch ovens are often completely free over here (slang term) 🤣

I keep on looking for these fabled hash browns (seen them mentioned before) but there aren't ever any in stock.

Gruffalogrinch · 10/03/2022 19:14

I am a huge fan of Aldi, and tried the coveted hash browns a while ago. They were “ok” but nothing like McDonalds.
