We’ve moved near an Aldi (I don’t drive so have to walk to do grocery shopping) and I’m besides myself with excitement.

Can you tell me your top buys if you shop there? I’ve heard good things about the chocolate…

Moser Roth chocolate
The round cheesy garlic bread in the fridge aisle
The garlic dip (with the pizzas) - 3 times the size of the pot you get with a Dominos and tastes even better!
Fajita kit
My kids prefer their versions of wotsits, hula hoops and quavers

They have really nice reed diffusers that are a fraction of the price you'd pay in a posh shop.

sasparilla1 · 08/03/2022 11:10

I do 95% of my shopping in there, but my absolute favourites are:

full fat greek yogurt
own brand fajita kits
the kids love the huge stuffed crust pizzas in the cardboard box
cold meats - especially pastrami
chocolate ganache puddings in the little glass pots
extra special fillet steak - I'd rather have a small bit of lovely meat
all the Lacura face stuff - I use the Skin Caviar constantly

I always buy their laundry gel as it's such good value and really is good.

Murderinparadise · 08/03/2022 11:25

I also do 95% of my shopping there and have very few failure things. My favourite though is their specially selected West Country butter with salt crystals. The best real butter I’ve ever had. I find their fruit and veg excellent too,,they have such a fast through rate that most doesn’t get the chance to go bad too quickly. And all supermarkets have some veg that doesn’t last.

I really love the sushi and the mussels in white wine sauce
cobblers123 · 08/03/2022 11:33

I buy their Wonky fruit, blueberries and grapes, much cheaper and I don't really care about whether some of the fruit is different sizes, it all goes down the same way.

user1499609760 · 08/03/2022 11:33

We do most of our shopping there & have only occasionally had a dud product. We used to avoid their pasta as it wasn’t great, but recently they have had some Specially Selected pasta in a variety of shapes which is much better. Love their sourdough pizzas at the moment. Specially Selected peppermint teabags. Greek yoghurt. Millionaire dessert pots - shortbread, caramel, chocolate, delicious. Their Specially Selected oven chips - nicer than the chipper even.

My main problem with Aldi is that you’ll develop a love for something, only for them to discontinue it! I used to love these naan chips and then they stopped selling them… Sad

The frozen rectangle flat bread pizzas

BIWI · 08/03/2022 11:38

Wines and spirits are very good and also very good value.

Currently on offer (because of Valentine's day I think) is a South African Pinotage Rosé, for £3.99. Usually £6 something.

All their gins are good - their 'basic' gin, branded Greysons, is also an award-winner. But the Haysmiths range is also very good. My current favourite is the oriental spiced one - much nicer, more subtle than Ophir - which is £14.99 for 70cl.

Very good cheese range, especially their regional cheddars and Red Fox Leicester.

Anything branded 'Specially Selected' is well worth a try.

And I love their Lacura moisturisers as well.

Never had a problem with veg/fruit going off; in fact, I think the quality of their fruit and veg is excellent.

If only our cats liked their cheaper cat food!

Wolveryeti · 08/03/2022 11:40

Moser Roth white choc
Gin
Argentine wine in £6 range
Their cheapest EV olive oil is excellent
Oat cakes / crackers

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 08/03/2022 11:43

Norpack butter

The Aldi hot chocolate. Less than a quid and it's one of the nicest hot chocolates I've had

The specially selected layered yogurts. They do a mango, fudge and strawberry flavours in it

trying29 · 08/03/2022 11:44

i forgot their cheeses - really good parmesan, gruyere for £2.50! unheard of elsewhere. i always stock up there

CaveMum · 08/03/2022 11:48

@user1499609760 oh god yes the Millionaire Shortbread Chocolate pots are divine!

mrsm43s · 08/03/2022 11:53

Their Salmon Wellingons (freezer section) are great for about £4. We also rate their dishwasher tabs, their cheeses and cured meats. They also do a sliced choc chip brioche loaf which is great.

On the whole we find their fruit and veg OK, but we do find it needs to be used pretty quickly.

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/03/2022 11:58

Mussels in white wine or garlic sauce, plus the part-bake sourdough rolls. A very easy dinner.

Whatterywhat · 08/03/2022 12:02

Their 3 fish roast in the freezer section. All their cheeses and prepared veg. Nothing is wasted
All there face cream and make up. Also their luxury shower gel, not cheap at £2 but it's gorgeous as real treat

tulips27 · 08/03/2022 12:07

Agree with @user1499609760 about the specially selected pasta. Also the large tubs of Greek yoghurt. A lot of the solid chocolate bars are palm oil-free, which is great.

They do lovely round Mediterranean style pittas which are like the ones you get in falafel places. Their feta is also a good price vs. other supermarkets. I read somewhere to get the extra mature cheddar in a gold wrapper but haven't tried it myself yet. A lot of the "special" cheeses look good but I can't really afford them.

Over summer they do a small factor 50 baby sunscreen which I use on the beach as I burn easily, it's really effective. I wanted to stock up at the end of this summer but it was all gone when I went to do that!

Generally I pick up useful stuff for round the house like sheets regularly, too, for a good price.

user1499609760 · 08/03/2022 12:14

@CaveMum One of their sourdough pizzas & a millionaire chocolate pot - the ideal Saturday night treat!

Their crackers & breadstick-type things are lovely. Both the regular cheese & chive puff pastry ones & the specially selected ones are great, especially the Parmesan. I get effervescent vitamin C tablets there too, in raspberry - much nicer than all the orange varieties out there that leave a strong aftertaste.

Billandben444 · 08/03/2022 12:19

Lacura caviar night cream - as good as the clarins one I used to use. I can't rave about much else tbh.

Furries · 08/03/2022 12:33

Their versions of branded products are great, and most of them are around half the price of branded: ready salted crisps, hula hoops, quavers, chocolate digestives, mayo, brown sauce, dishwasher tablets, washing tablets.

Always good value on loo roll, kitchen roll, tin foil, bin bags (I’ll never buy genuine Brabantia bags again)

Frozen veg is always good value.

Their Specially Selected range is normally good (but like Tescos Finest). Have just tried (from the frozen section) salmon fish cakes with a sweet chilli dip centre - blooming lovely.

Pesto, pasta sauces etc. their jars of herbs are great value compared to branded.

I’ll buy their beef mince and diced chicken/mini chicken fillets for batch cooking bolognaise or curry etc and also for doing a stir fry. If I want meat to be just “meat” (ie for a roast, steak etc) then I tend to buy that elsewhere. Their fish is normally pretty good. I don’t eat much dairy, but they seem to have lots of choice at good prices.

Their wines/spirits are usually good and are very good value.

Lots of toiletries are good value.

Their bread section is also good value. Naan bread/wraps/brioche rolls etc - much better value than other supermarkets.

I find most of their fresh veg has been absolutely fine. They also do bags of frozen chopped peppers, onions etc.

I’d say give it a few weeks of shopping there. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised re what you can swap out with regards to branded products. The only things I haven’t been able to substitute so far are Heinz ketchup and Heinz baked beans!

Good luck getting used to the speed at which you need to throw stuff back in your trolley at the checkout 😂

SouthParkCovid · 08/03/2022 12:39

Love:

Baby wipes and nappies
Formula
Baby snacks, pouches etc
Cheap fromage frais
Sausage rolls
Body wash

Not a fan of:

Meat
Lacura face creams, very thick and greasy on the skin
Fruit nd veg, ends up rotten very quickly
Diet coke, very cheap and you can tell

CurryLover56 · 08/03/2022 12:58

PPs have already mentioned some of what I was going to say. I do find their frozen food very good & very reasonable. Another vote for the salmon wellingtons ( one with prawns & one with leek & cheese). I haven’t found the wines very good lately & the fruit & veg can be hit & miss eg kale for the bunnies tends to be fresher & last longer from Asda or Tescos. The washing gel is very good, also the big citrus scented kitchen rolls. Cheeses, foreign hams etc are excellent.

Happylittlethoughts · 08/03/2022 13:44

The fake McDonald's breakfast stuff- the hash browns are best Ive ever tasted. Get the pork patties and breakfast muffins 🙌

emmathedilemma · 08/03/2022 14:01

I just do my normal shop there but things I'd stock up on and rarely buy in Sainsburys now:
shampoo & conditioner that looks the L'oreal bottles
shower gel that smells like the Original Source range
bath bubbles
dishwasher tablets
washing up liquid
sandwich bags
tinfoil
bin liners
tinned tomatoes / beans / chickpeas etc
tomato puree
pasatta
boxes of tissues and the little handbag packs
kitchen roll
baking ingredients - flour, sugar, cocoa etc
eggs
breakfast cereals and oats
snacks and cereal bars
almond milk

I've never really had an issue with the fresh fruit, veg, meat and fish. I don't buy ready made sauces and I don't eat much dairy. The only thing I can't get there is soya yogurt - they do a small range but it's absolutely loaded with sugar compared to Alpro.

Sh05 · 08/03/2022 14:07

The chocolate chip brioche loaf, the Aldi hot chocolate, chocolate wafer bars and the wonky fruit and veg

Feelingthepinch22 · 08/03/2022 14:09

Their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc!
