We’ve moved near an Aldi (I don’t drive so have to walk to do grocery shopping) and I’m besides myself with excitement.

Can you tell me your top buys if you shop there? I’ve heard good things about the chocolate…

Orange and Lime Gin

britneyisfree · 08/03/2022 08:12

Can't think of any off the top of my head but I 1000% recommend you go in asap and check it out. It's bloody brilliant imo (only converted two years ago and have now moved away - now close to a Lidl which I am loving too!)

SoupDragon · 08/03/2022 08:15

Whenever these threads pop up you get people raving about something and then an equal number of people thinking it is rank. 😂

I love their chocolate - all of the chocolate. I found their toiletries were all very good. The flavoured olive oils are great. At Christmas the potted cheddar is delicious. Cheese in general is excellent.

SoupDragon · 08/03/2022 08:15

Basically, just try everything you normally would and see which things you like.

helpmum2003 · 08/03/2022 08:17

Norpak spreadable butter. Just like Lurpak but loads cheaper. Packets of rice to heat in microwave. Coffee beans.

OutsideVoice · 08/03/2022 08:22

Their microwave popcorn is far better than branded stuff.
I’m not a fan of their milk chocolate, but the dark chocolate is good.
Butter with salt crystals in is gorgeous.

BingBangB0ng · 08/03/2022 08:23

Thank you!!

The mamia baby wipes are better than brand name wipes.
The white chocolate mousse bars are nice.

collywobble · 08/03/2022 08:26

Crispy duck with hoisin sauce.
Ginger and soy stir fry beef is lovely.
They have just started doing innocent style smoothies too kiwi lime and cucumber is nice. Fruit and veg and meat are all good quality.

TottiePlantagenet · 08/03/2022 08:34

BBQ pulled pork or the ribs
Milk chocolate with salted pretzels
Gin in a blue bottle
Fevertree style tonic
Lacura serum (quite a strong accent though)
Garlic & sesame crackers in a tub (savory heaven)
Sweet potato pakoras
Antipasti selections

SummerOfComedy · 08/03/2022 08:44

Whenever I go into to Aldi, I buy one or two things that I think I would like but haven't tried before.
Don't think I've ever been disappointed with anything.

What I'm trying to get my hands on at the moment is the frozen hash browns. They look like McDonald's version. Supposed to be really nice, but they've always sold out when I get there!

I especially like the Jo Malone type candles and Reed diffusers. Number 14 is my favourite.

soupey1 · 08/03/2022 08:56

The biggest problem I have is that I find something that we love and then they discontinue it. Luckily we have an Aldi and a Lidl virtually opposite each other so I can do both in one shop.

GurtBusty · 08/03/2022 09:09

Things I always buy from ALDI:

Frozen peas
Tinned tomatoes
Passata
Orange juice
Sausages
Baking potatoes (not pre-packed)
Chocolate
Crisps
Squash
Parmasean
Cereals - oats, wheatabix, branflakes
Flour, sugar, dried fruit, etc for baking
Norpack spread
Wine
Frozen fish (the sea bream fillets are good)
Fish fingers
Eggs
Jam
Deodorant
Candles
Shampoo/conditioner
Bin bags, cling film, foil
Dishwasher tabs and washing up liquid

Things I avoid:

Pre packed potatoes (often terrible quality)
Not keen on their chicken - fairly tasteless
Coffee beans/ground coffee - better elsewhere (eg Lidl summatra and mandehling)
Tea

collieresponder88 · 08/03/2022 09:16

Ladies pink grapefruit shower gel and Aldi day and night cold and flu tablets are brilliant !
All the Almat washing stuff is good including the so soft softener
Washing up liquid fab
Their giant bag of fake wotsit crisps are to die for
Earl grey tea bags
Face wipes are good
Cotton buds
Basically everything and it's so much cheaper than the other supermarkets

Marmite27 · 08/03/2022 09:19

There’s not much we don’t like to be honest.

DH doesn’t like the fat free yoghurt, and we don’t like the family lasagne ready meal (too much white sauce). Also, not keen on the gravy granuals.

I now prefer Aldi’s stuff to name brand - particularly Nordpak and Moser Roth Sea Salt dark chocolate.

Marmite27 · 08/03/2022 09:20

Oh and the big bag of ‘British apples’ are good. 2kg for £2 ish and they’re massive!

Branleuse · 08/03/2022 09:23

They do some great eyeshadow palettes and mascaras that dont smudge.
Their vegan turkey dinosaurs are much nicer than the quorn ones.
Their thick and creamy strawberry yoghurts.
Tbh most things are absolutely fine and no different to other supermarkets food-wise

DockOTheBay · 08/03/2022 09:24

The chocolate is great and most of it doesn't contain palm oil so even better.

The potted desserts are great - the chocolate mousse with a black lid and the ganache desserts in ceramic pots are delicious. Skyr yogurts with fruit layer very tasty.

All the antipasto stuff is nice. Parma ham, salami, olives, stuffed peppers etc.

BeeandG · 08/03/2022 09:36

We get a lot from Aldi but favourites are:
Dried mango
The low fat creme fraiche
Diet coke
Frozen prawns
Stir in pasta sauces

Probably best just trying things and seeing what you like!

Christmas1988 · 08/03/2022 09:36

The only thing worth buying is the ‘Dairyfine’ chocolate buttons, 33p for a bag and so much more creamy than Cadbury, the ‘Titan’ bars are fake Mars bars which are nice too but very small 85p for 6. Stay away from the fruit and veg and vegan products they taste old and not fresh at all.

trying29 · 08/03/2022 09:47

i disagree - the fruit and veg is brilliant, great value. the brioche buns they do for burgers are the best on the market hands down.
their wines are also pretty good

cherrytopcake · 08/03/2022 10:43

Ready, Set…Cook! Thai Green Curry Kit. It's amazing and costs £1.59. We add frozen prawns & fresh carrots (or green beans or peppers). Cook the rice. Quick dinner. Tastes amazing. I prefer this to a takeaway thai green curry (or at least just as good).

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 08/03/2022 10:43

I like Aldi coffee beans and they’re much cheaper than main supermarkets. I’m sure the fruit and veg quality depends on the local store management. Our nearest store opened in October, so their fridge and freezer cabinets are very efficient.

Brioche buns, sandwich thins, wraps, muffins are good. I recently had a ready meal lasagne that was as good as Charlie Bighams.
Anything Lacura, wipes, Almat stuff, cleaning products all good.

Obviously, the range isn’t as extensive as the big supermarkets, but we manage without all the extra stuff and an occasional trip to Sainsbury's for things needed for a recipe.

cherrytopcake · 08/03/2022 10:46

Spanish style grains. In the rice and pasta section (with the microwave rice).

cherrytopcake · 08/03/2022 10:48

Oh yes and the wines are good. I love their Languedoc rosé and the NZ Sauvignon Blanc. They aren't expensive.
