Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

China now claiming they would like to play a part in negotiating a ceasefire. The statement says they respect the territorial integrity of all countries. I wonder if Taiwan will find that reassuring.

Just saw on the bbc news website that there was a strike on the main TV tower in Kyiv.

Thank you for the new thread, have been following the other very informative one today.

CatrinVennastin · 01/03/2022 16:21

@BeyondPurpleTulips sorry cross posted with you regarding the tv tower.

Surely that is a civilian target?

John Sweeney's Twitter handle he brings cussedness, and old sea dog and like you said doesn't give a fuck anymore about offending his masters and has been hounding Putin and his nefarious links at great risk to his safety for many years and he's on the ground in his mismatched winter wear in Kyiv.

Also from the FT. Interesting comments from the Russian Foreign Mnister

Nuclear war “cannot be won and must never be waged”, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told UN diplomats in Geneva on Tuesday.

Speaking via video link because of a Swiss travel ban against him, Lavrov’s remarks came two days after President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia’s strategic forces on high alert, in an act of nuclear sabre-rattling that sparked widespread condemnation.

Lavrov delivered his remarks to a largely empty room: more than 100 diplomats from the US, EU and allies walked out as he began addressing the UN’s conference on disarmament and the human rights council.

His comments marked an apparent step back in rhetoric from recent thinly-veiled threats about Russia’s nuclear strength — including that made by Putin in his televised address announcing Russia’s armed intervention last week, that foreign interference would lead to “consequences such as you have never experienced in your history”.

It is unclear how much Lavrov reflected his president’s thinking, however.

The foreign minister’s speech was peppered with unsubstantiated claims that Ukraine posed a threat because of its nuclear knowhow.

Lavrov repeated Russian demands that US nuclear weapons should be removed from Europe.

Maybe some Russian ministers are starting to see the writing on the wall?

Do you? Why? They pretty much announced this as their intention days ago and we've made no movements. It won't be a surprise to many, really, will it? I suspect they'll become subject to the same economic sanctions as Russia and their people seem to be putting up a resistance, but there's no Nato appetite for a nuclear war, thankfully, and talks are apparently still set to continue on the border. What other (rational) action do you propose?

Reconvening tomo 2nd March apparently, little progress made so far.

Really hope some common ground can be found.
