Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

Morale is also low because the troops were told that they'd be welcomed. I think they're going to have a lot of troops surrendering.

Maybe the Ukrainians need to set up POW camps in Kyiv ?

toastfiend · 01/03/2022 16:43

@Inthesameboatatmo

Jesus christ I was only making a fuckin comment. Calm down will you .
If this was aimed at me then I don't think I'm the one that needs to calm down. I saw your comment re Belarus on the previous thread, too, hence I asked a genuine question - what further action do you foresee us taking or propose that we take that won't dramatically increase the risk of this leading to a nuclear war?
Alexandra2001 · 01/03/2022 16:44

The fact the column is not moving means it is not going as planned for the Russians..the fact it has not been attacked in a meaningful way means it’s not going as planned for the Ukrainians

Could be to do with peace talks? neither side wanting to up the ante? dunno just trying to take a positive.

anotherperson1 · 01/03/2022 16:44

@Alexandra2001

Can someone explain why Belarus feel they need to get involved

A key Putin ally and another dictator, probably worse than Putin.

Remember how he hijacked a Ryanair airliner and took away a dissident.. less than a year ago..

Yet again we did nothing.

Thanks for this. I must have missed that news a year ago, I have no memory of this.
dogfishman · 01/03/2022 16:45

Contrary to what letmesleep123 insinuates, the 2019 Ukraine election was about as free and fair as one of ours. It was attended by numerous international observers and almost all the votes went either to Zelensky or Poroshenko, both of whom support EU accession for Ukraine and advancing its NATO application. In the eastern regions and Crimea, the level of support for these policies may well be less than that. But no-one should doubt that the vast majority of Ukrainians support a western-leaning government and have done since 2014 or earlier.

ClingClingDin · 01/03/2022 16:49

Nuclear war “cannot be won and must never be waged”, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told UN diplomats in Geneva on Tuesday.
And Belarus said they'd not go to war with their neighbours. I wouldn't really believe any of them.

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2022 16:50

Reports that the situation in Kyiv is also getting worse. No food.

The discussion of a long strung out column of materiel isn't a great situation if you're invading. Might look good for the press but tactically it makes little sense.

Maybe this is the first instagram war ?

Did I hear some Ukrainians were helping stranded Russian tanks with fuel laced with sugar ?

Natasha Bertrand @natashabertrand (CNN white house reporter) Russian advance on Kyiv remains “basically…where it was yesterday” senior defense official told reporters today. "The Russians are not only facing “fuel and sustainment” problems, but are showing signs that they are running out of food, the official claimed. via @MichaelTConte

"...units are surrendering, sometimes without a fight," the official said. "A lot of these soldiers are conscripts, never been in combat before, some of whom we believe weren’t even told they were going to be in combat. So we’re just seeing evidence of a bit of risk aversion.”

There has been much said about putins motivation for invading Ukraine. There was an interesting lecture online by Jordon Petersen who is a personality psychologist. He was lecturing about hitler and made the point that if you find a persons motivations unfathomable then it can be worth looking at the outcomes of their actions as their motivation. This is logical but also pretty scary way of looking at putin. For example the outcome of putins actions is that Russian soldiers, Ukrainian soldiers are killed and civilians are killed and displaced and a country is in chaos.

Putin is nearly 70. He has been at the helm in Russia for 23/4 years in a autocracy. What has that done to him emotionally and psychologically? He looks unwell. His plastic surgery is inevitably starting to go south and yes he does look puffy and Ill.

It is not unknown for dictators to start to lose their sense of reality and moral compass after so long in power and at such an age. I know Russia has a very different culture to the west broadly speaking but the way he has acted in an arrogant and sneering way during these ridiculous set pieces is appalling and worth analysing.

What do Russians expect of him in terms of behaviour. Did they not expect him to behave in a statesmenlike way and say how sorry he was for any deaths and damage on both sides. Why sneer and smile. Do Russians find this acceptable that their leader shares no regret even if he is acting. Are they satisfied that their leader is openly uncaring about the plight of Russians and ukrainians and offers no moral leadership, regret, sympathy. Even if only on the surface. This is not a satisfactory response from a world leader.

Are Russians satisfied at putins personal response to them and their soldiers? If boris said the uk were willing to sacrifice 50,000 for the glorious aims in Ukraine would the British public think this was all fine and dandy…I think not.

Putin also addresses the Russian people by stating that he/I took decisions. Ok great where is the rest of the government. So if bojo hops up and says oh by the way I have just decided to fire off a couple of nukes. The British public would say how dare you make that decision and where are your advisors.

Russians are now more unsafe and worse of culturally and economically than they were. If putin wanted to liberate the east then where was the diplomatic plan to do so? Ukraine’s bigger more powerful neighbour could have come up with a plan to resolve that conflict peacefully in those regions. Why not even try. The east is being used as an excuse.

Can I put forward the idea that putin is acting from his own psychological and emotional need to create war and chaos as we have seen with every dictator that we have ever known and that that sadly is his motivation.

You need to calm down.

PP's comments were very valid.

Could be anything, unexploded ordnance from WWI or WWII, even. I wouldn't worry about it, particularly, and I wouldn't have thought it was remotely related to this war.
thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 01/03/2022 16:56

I get really confused with the news. Does Ukraine want to join nato? And also what does it mean for them applying to join the EU? Isn't that only going to pee putin off even more?

Greattimestroubledtimes · 01/03/2022 16:59

Yes to following both John Sweeney and Oz Katerji. There is also some really interesting military analysis going on in places on Twitter - @militaryhistori is straightforward and calm and informed

User12398712 · 01/03/2022 17:00

@DGRossetti

The convoy appears to be hampered in several places by broken down vehicles.

When the Nazis forced the French to build their vehicles, the French developed all sorts of invisible sabotage techniques. Like putting the wrong dipstick in a lorry so it would break down after a few hundred miles of service (with all the drain resources that would create).

Amazing what a love of history puts into your mind.

Corrie Ten Boom mentions doing similar when she was arrested by the Nazis and doing forced work in an aircraft factory.
BeyondPurpleTulips · 01/03/2022 17:01

Not saying it is the definite reason, but joining the EU gives something else to add to peace talks - eg: "we agree to cancel our membership request if you leave"

What's wrong with megalomania ? Seems as good a diagnosis as any.

But why should they ?

And for a country that has spent the last five fucking years having "sovereignty" rammed down it's fucking throat, the UK seems rather shy about championing anyone elses.

Probably dummy shells from Salisbury Plain. The town is not far from there.
