Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

@CatrinVennastin

Just saw on the bbc news website that there was a strike on the main TV tower in Kyiv.

Thank you for the new thread, have been following the other very informative one today.

Interesting strategic target to disrupt the very successful communications that Ukraine has been able to sustain with its own people and the wider world.

Less than 90 minutes before the attack, Russian forces said it would carry out strikes against Ukraine’s capital and warned residents in Kyiv to leave their homes.

According to the Guardian :

The ministry said some Ukrainian channels will not work for a while but backup programmes would be broadcast in the near future.

Can't believe how quick these threads are filling up, really informative - thank you to all the posters

Seen the tv tower bombed now, but has anyone noticed how close it is to Babyn yar? Not good optics
I have been thinking about Babyn Yar too. They only launched the memorial project last October (how long ago that seems now)

Placemarking. Thanks all.

From BBC live reporting

Some clarity on that massive Russian armoured column heading south towards Kyiv.

Close analysis of the latest satellite images by McKenzie Intelligence Services reveals the following:

The convoy is not 40 miles long, it’s a series of logistical ‘packets’ strung out along a major highway from the Belarus border, aiming to link up with Russian units on the northern outskirts of Kyiv.
The convoy appears to be hampered in several places by broken down vehicles.
The column consists of some armour (tanks) and infantry fighting vehicles but mainly logistical vehicles, implying plans for more than just a brief battle.
Separately, the imagery examined by McKenzie Intelligence Services shows a Russian parachute battalion dug in to the area of Hostomel airfield - Ukraine's most important international cargo airport and a key military airbase near Kyiv.

But their artillery is assessed to be outside the range of most of the capital.

The analysts say they have noted very little Russian progress over the past 24 hours.

ClaudineClare · 01/03/2022 16:35

Also placemarking.

DGRossetti · 01/03/2022 16:35

For those that recall the (alleged) fate that befell the Valkyrie plotters, pictures of Putin playing the piano have a slightly deeper resonance. (Or they would if you like Dan Brown).

The biggest development of the last few minutes has been China commenting. Anyone remember "Enter the Dragon" ? My way of fighting is not to fight

@vera99

One guy I’m following on Twitter is the freelance journalist Oz Katerji. He has remained in Kyiv even though many other journalists have already left Ukraine.

His latest tweets are showing people queuing for hours to buy bread, supermarkets with empty shelves and the destruction of the Kyiv television tower 😢

UN are saying 660k refugees have left Ukraine and over 1 million displaced but still in Ukraine.

I hope the UK will take as many refugees as required and will become part of the EU resettlement scheme.

MissConductUS · 01/03/2022 16:35

The Russian column advancing on Kyiv seems to be stuck for a lack of fuel.

Stuck

Another US defense department official has indicated that some Russian units have run out of food.

Morale is also low because the troops were told that they'd be welcomed. I think they're going to have a lot of troops surrendering.

anotherperson1 · 01/03/2022 16:36

@Inthesameboatatmo

With Belarus now sending in troops I have absolutely no doubt we will have to get involved further.
Can someone explain why Belarus feel they need to get involved?
CaveMum · 01/03/2022 16:36

Going to tag @FatherBuzzCagney as the contributions you have made on other threads have been very informative, but if you don't feel like posting on here I apologise.

BREAKING: U.S. believes Russia has committed more than 80 percent of pre-staged troops into Ukraine: senior U.S. defense official. Russia has not been able to advance on Kyiv due to fuel & sustainment problems. "Not only are they running out of gas, they're running out of food"

DGRossetti · 01/03/2022 16:38

The convoy appears to be hampered in several places by broken down vehicles.

When the Nazis forced the French to build their vehicles, the French developed all sorts of invisible sabotage techniques. Like putting the wrong dipstick in a lorry so it would break down after a few hundred miles of service (with all the drain resources that would create).

Amazing what a love of history puts into your mind.

Tbf tv tower is a top strategic target. Does suggest they are starting to get their act together.

For ignoramuses like me who looked at the map of the tv tower and thought "what's the big deal, Babyn Yar looks like a nice park?"

Jesus christ I was only making a fuckin comment. Calm down will you .
Was that to me? I was just asking a question as I don't have any knowledge of Belarus and wanted to understand more.

Is this Russia throwing their last in?

Is it wishful thinking that Ukraine could hold off?

Alexandra2001 · 01/03/2022 16:41

A key Putin ally and another dictator, probably worse than Putin.

Remember how he hijacked a Ryanair airliner and took away a dissident.. less than a year ago..

Yet again we did nothing.

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2022 16:41

Moscow franchise government. Not independent.

Thanks…I saw some succinct analysis on this at lunchtime:

The fact the column is not moving means it is not going as planned for the Russians..the fact it has not been attacked in a meaningful way means it’s not going as planned for the Ukrainians.
