Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

@Papyrus

Just seen that four Russian fighter jets have apparently violated Swedish airspace. What are they playing at? It's like they want to provoke WW3.
They've been doing this in UK airspace for a long time and we send jets up to escort them out and it costs us masses of money and makes people edgy.

Who knows whether they're playing a different game with it now, but this isn't a new tactic for them.

LawnFever · 02/03/2022 20:18

@Bunnyfuller

So *@lawnfever* - how do we stop him? (Without triggering WW3 - and it’s no good saying ‘ah, but he caused it, by doing what he did, because there won’t be anyone left to say it).

Interested to hear how.

I have no idea, I totally agree it’s liable to end in WW3 but equally he can’t just carry on.

I have no answers, it’s just heartbreaking.

youhadmeatjello · 02/03/2022 20:19

@yoolia what kind of plane? That’s quite vague. Do you have a link? I’ve not seen that reported anywhere else.

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 20:20

Whereas are the Russian nuclear submarines!!

LawnFever · 02/03/2022 20:21

@Alexandra2001

I don’t think Putin will be able to go for other Eastern European countries

He will once he has Ukraine, why not, we wont risk war.

Exactly, if he gets what he wants with Ukraine why would he stop?

If nobody is (can?) stop this and he knows it then why would he stop there?

yoolia · 02/03/2022 20:22

The plane is a Mig 21.

toastfiend · 02/03/2022 20:22

According to Twitter, both a MiG-29 and the helicopter that was sent to find it. Supposedly they had reported poor weather conditions and had been told to return to base so it could be unrelated to the conflict.

Bunnyfuller · 02/03/2022 20:23

@LawnFever

Yes, heartbreaking is the word 😞😣

toastfiend · 02/03/2022 20:23

Sorry, MiG-21, brain didn't catch up with my typing there!

elephantmarchingin · 02/03/2022 20:24

@yoolia

Have seen on twitter a Romanian plane has gone down over the black sea. Romania is a nato member.
Haven't they said this was due to bad weather as reported by the search crew
youhadmeatjello · 02/03/2022 20:26

Hopefully it’s the bad weather (not that I’m wishing anything bad on them) and unrelated to the conflict.

kingat · 02/03/2022 20:27

Just reading the UN voting table, interesting bunch of allies.
I dont actually understand what UN is for. My questions are probably really stupid, but I honestly dont see the point of it.
They dont have any power over anything, do they? They just talk, is it basically a platorm where all countries in the world can meet up?
But what do they do everyday, seems extremaly expensive, who pays for it?
They had conference in NY and two days later in Geneva, are there two bases then?

Galdb · 02/03/2022 20:28

From what I read it will take a huge amount of money and military to actually occupy Ukraine as the Ukrainian people don’t want to be ruled by Russia. So perhaps Putin won’t have the manpower to attack anywhere else?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 02/03/2022 20:28

From: elephantmarchingin Are they in NATO?

Neither Finland nor Sweden are in NATO.

Bunnyfuller · 02/03/2022 20:28

And this is what you get when you warn about sanctions…

The same happened in Japan too today.

Theyve done this repeatedly over uk airspace for sometime.

Its not something new, but nerves are jangling.

Theres also a report of a MiG-21 having just disappeared in Romania whilst on patrol over the Black Sea and the rescue helicopter sent after it has been confirmed as crashed. But the helicopter pilot reported appalling conditions locally before the crash so its being regarded as an accident rather than something more significant at this stage. But again you can feel the nerves...

Postdatedpandemic · 02/03/2022 20:32

I thought the countries that abstained from the UN vote were indeed an interesting bunch.
Nice map of the vote in this article
www.axios.com/united-nations-ukraine-russia-141-55872481-a143-4423-9d3d-80450f01c754.html

Large Asian block - predictable
Africa - interesting

BeyondPurpleTulips · 02/03/2022 20:33

They've played "oops sorry, we accidentally flew into your airspace" for possibly as long as I can remember!

Tigersonvaseline · 02/03/2022 20:36

Alexander konachivy (sp) has put a bounty on Putin's head

yoolia · 02/03/2022 20:37

In more positive news, the US cancelled a long planned ICBM test that was meant to take place, so nothing could be misinterpreted in these high tension times.

Nice to have grown ups in charge, over there at least.

Alexandra2001 · 02/03/2022 20:39

What you say doesn't make sense.
So we wont risk NFZ because it risks WW3 and Putin is crazy enough to use Nukes.
BUT Putin is apparently sane enough to realise that if he were to attack a NATO country we would retaliate... risking WW3.

So the consensus in Europe/US is we allow (potentially) millions of Ukrainians to die now and after Russia takes the country and we do nothing to prevent it & the Russian will extract massive revenge on any Ukrainians that stay, they will be raped/killed/starved/imprisoned in terrible conditions - look no further than Russian recent history for evidence of what they will do.

CatAndHisKit · 02/03/2022 20:40

@MarshaBradyo

Contrary to what I've heard speculated elsewhere, people in China know exactly what Russia is doing and they are in overwhelming general support. Zelensky, considered here the best thing since sliced bread, is there viewed as an American puppet who has foolishly provoked Russia into an attack on his country

Strong words and very sympathetic to Putin. What did he do in your view that provoked the invasion?

just that - being a US puppet and trying to join EU and poss NatO, also not lettinng the separatists separate. Putin hates the US and to him it's intlorale that Ukraine (bu eright part of russia as he sees it0 is falling under the rule of US via the current govt.
CatAndHisKit · 02/03/2022 20:41

*intolerable

Well people can take their own views and that’s up to you

But I’m not hearing many commentators talk about going into Ukraine, and we’ve had statements re what will happen in Putin enters a NATO country
