@IcyWinterWonderland

Putin has just threatened to drop 'the father of all bombs'.
What was this on? It just gets worse.
Olden · 25/02/2022 19:25

@IcyWinterWonderland

Putin has just threatened to drop 'the father of all bombs'.
That's taken out of context - that quote doesn't come from putin but from a Mail article. Please be careful about what you say and where it comes from:

Putin prepares to use 'father of all bombs' as Ukraine fights advance

The Cold War was very hot in SE Asia, Africa, Central America.

I vividly remember us discussing Poland and East Germany. I mean the Wall coming down was incredible.

I also remember discussing nuclear war and me and my friends at school talking about who would hide and who would just climb a hill and watch.

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 19:27

It's in the Daily Mail on line but I don't see that Putin said it - it's how the Mail is describing a thermobarbic weapon that they are saying he might use.
Apologies if I have that wrong but it doesn't seem it's been said - just a description of a weapon.

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 19:27

Cross posted with you Olden!

ballsdeep · 25/02/2022 19:38

Please don't quote the fail as a bloody direct source

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 19:42

Balls. Covet asked where the quote came from.
It came from the Mail on line - it was not said by Putin.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 19:44

I've just seen a Russian rapper in NY has spoken out in disgust but has anyone seen condemnation from the likes of Roman Abramowitz etc? Or Sergey, who owned the independent?

workisnotawolf · 25/02/2022 19:46

I really think the UN Security Council urgently need to draw up some red lines, use of certain types of weapons (chemical/biological) and any further invasions of territory beyond Ukraine. If he crosses those red lines then Russia is deemed gone rogue and no longer recognised as a full member due to the government not having full capacity. They urgently need to find a legal way out of this mess.

ballsdeep · 25/02/2022 19:53

Sorry, i wasn't responding to you. I was responding to the poster who said it forst.
Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 19:54

No worries

alittleadvicepls · 25/02/2022 19:54

Can we just skip to the bit where he kills himself in his bunker?

AKASammyScrounge · 25/02/2022 19:54

@Ramalamadingdongs

They are utterly desperate for help and the world is just standing by watching. I am ashamed to be British.
Why ashamed to be British? We haven't invaded anyone. The temptation to go and help Ukraine is natural but that could lead to nuclear war. So Europe is trying the sanctions route. You'd better pray sanctions work because the alternative is horrifying.
cakeorwine · 25/02/2022 19:58

There was talk on Radio 4 about how this action will have a massive impact on countries who aren't NATO members and will force a decision.

Is that what Putin wanted?

PicsInRed · 25/02/2022 19:59

I'm aghast, he clearly wants a war with the West (NATO) and it doesn't look like we're going to be able to avert it.

Do those here who are crying out for us to get directly militarily involved want your own 17 or 18 year old sons conscripted? Or your 15 or 16 year old going over in 2 years? Your 13 or 14 year old in 4 years? This is a boots on the ground war, and so that's where we could end up if this goes continent wide - and that is why the leaders of NATO countries are desperately trying to stay out of the direct fighting. Though we may well not be able to stay out of it if Putin really wants us in it and attacks first.

We should support Ukraine in every way we can, but we should also try everything we possibly can to avoid this becoming a whole European conflict.

The horror would be almost unimaginable.

Phrenologistsfinger · 25/02/2022 20:00

Bombing a Ukrainian orphanage was a seriously low move. Poor Ukraine.

Putin needs to go, now.

workisnotawolf · 25/02/2022 20:06

The threats to recent (post 1997) NATO countries are worrying to me because he is hinting that he does not recognise them as legal NATO members. That is why the UN needs to come into this legally asap, in my non learned opinion.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 25/02/2022 20:08

Having experienced an actual war zone, having worked a refugee crisis before:

Taking any news with a grain metric shitton of salt right now. War propaganda is an actual thing. We all like to think that "our side" is in the right and that we have out facts straight. We don't. At least not fully so.

I'm worried and, above all, concerned for the people in Ukraine. News I do trust are people who work for me personally reporting that refugees are trickling into their home towns as of yesterday.

It's scary. And inhumane, as all war is.

If you have contacts in Romania looking to help: please reach out - looking to connect people.

@ITSupport

Just as an observation….

I’ve noticed a distinction amongst friends and family……those younger than about 45 are all oh shit the world is about to end….. those over remember the Cold War. Many remember bay of pigs. To the older group this is - here we go again.

Bay if Pigs was brinkmanship. Neither side actually launched their weapons. Putin has gone past brinkmanship to launch a full-scale invasion.
raspberryjamchicken · 25/02/2022 20:18

Agree. Its so frightening to think a crazy, barbaric madman is pushing this. First it was the small secrion of Ukraine ehich changed into the whole country..... And now hes talking about Finland and sweden!!!

Also, this!

I really worry about this!

There are some 50+ people working with and for me somewhere in Romania - a.k.a. "that NATO country around that region".

I worry about people in Ukraine right now and I empathise. But that's all still "abstract" level.

The threat of it being my very own employees? This hits home, emotionally speaking!

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 20:33

Medecins sans Frontieres have halted operations in Ukraine (BBC)

ITSupport · 25/02/2022 20:38

@raspberryjamchicken

But Ukraine is not a nato state.

He has effectively invaded a third country - For as sound a reason as we did Afghanistan and Iraq if you really want to push it.

If he actually invades a nato country then it’s a game changer but most people don’t think he’s stupid enough to do that.
