Thanks @Natsku -- this is what I'm wondering, whether Putin's threat today would make Finns more or less likely to want to join NATO.

Reddershoes · 25/02/2022 17:35

I'm watching with dread. My son is in the forces, and yes I know this is what we sign up to, but I have fear in every cell of my body.

EsmaCannonball · 25/02/2022 17:36

Whoever drove that tank at a civilian car should also be prosecuted for a war crime. The whole thing is just thuggery.

HelpMeHiveMind · 25/02/2022 17:37

It's all fine folks - Russia are sure to back off now that the ultimate sanction has been rolled out. They've been ousted from Eurovision. (Heaven help Ukraine, and whichever other countries he goes for next)

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 17:46

@BoreOfWhabylon

Apparently the PM of Ukraine has called for foreign volunteers to just turn up there.
Yes - just heard this reported on PM (Radio 4)
Ohmnomnom · 25/02/2022 17:48

How have we (the west) let this madman amass over 6000 nuclear weapons and then use them as threat to invade and bomb innocent countries? Why are we so fucking spineless that we fawn and cater to him and give in to his ridiculous demands and ignore his spiteful threats?

I'm so angry at him. I knew he was evil, but always thought he was a smart and calculating man. But he's shown the world exactly what he is, a bitter and twisted, small-dicked, deluded, shit stain of a man. I hope they kill him soon and I hope its painful.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 17:51

It may seem insignificant And I know there's lots of jokes about Putin stooping his Madness because of this.
However!

It does matter.
It's humiliating. It's " another" thing that will upset people who enjoy it. Many Russian's would have been looking forward to hosting the f1. Cancelled.
The football, cancelled

The Idea we want nothing to do with them will sink in.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 25/02/2022 17:52

I was just reading about the EBU's u-turn on the Eurovision participation. I suppose it all builds up to a cultural and sporting boycott running parallel with economic sanctions, but it's hard to care particularly about a kitch song contest.

PerkingFaintly · 25/02/2022 17:53

Yes, there's been concern for some time about Russians buying property in Finland as preparation for any future invasion.

Much Russian aggression is conducted through private individuals and companies, rather than through openly government organisations, so it would fit the pattern.

2016:
Finnish government 'suspects Russia of buying property to house soldiers' in case of future invasion, tabloid claims
www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/finnish-government-suspects-russia-of-buying-property-to-house-troops-a7392841.html

2019 (I haven't read as paywalled):
Finland introduces checks on foreign real-estate purchases a year after raids on Russian-linked properties
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/11/01/finland-introduces-checks-foreign-real-estate-purchases-year/

Hi Natsku, thinking about you and your family. You'll know a great deal more about this than me.

1forAll74 · 25/02/2022 17:53

I would like dour faced Putin to be kidnapped, and taken to a place far away, a place for the mentaliy ill. and never be released.

BobbieMeserole · 25/02/2022 17:55

Can you please post a link to the first thread, the link up thread just brings me to this thread. Thanks!

maplemom · 25/02/2022 17:57

@Inthesameboatatmo

Thanks op.
We all wish the same, no one want this war. I reckon that Russian people also in oppose with this decision, there is only one man who is responsible for this situation
Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 18:00

Stoltenberg on BBC News says we must be prepared to defend every inch of NATO soil

My wish for him is far less civilised! Angry
Natsku · 25/02/2022 18:03

@PerkingFaintly they made a law that non-Finns wanting to buy property have to apply for a special permit to try to counter the Russians buying property thing. Also placed limits on what dual nationals can do in the army for instance to limit Finnish-Russian dual nationals getting too much intel or power, not sure exactly, but it even affects things like being a plane mechanic if you work on military planes even as a civilian.

GallopingHighRoad · 25/02/2022 18:06

It does not make sense to buy property to house soldiers. The properties would be worthless following an invasion and they could just be occupied anyway. It would be a complete waste of money and offer no advantage.

Ohmnomnom · 25/02/2022 18:11

I'm so curious what is happening behind the scenes. What Nato are doing on the ground to assist Ukraine (if anything).

Mochudubh · 25/02/2022 18:12

Same here.

@Ohmnomnom

Stoltenberg has just held a news conference stating that NATO will defend every inch of NATO territory. He did not say NATO troops would be sent in to Ukraine.
Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 18:16

They are trying to get him on BBC news

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 18:16

I'm actually wondering if people just sitting en mass might be the best things to do to stop them.

That poor old man in the car.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 18:18

The footage of that old Man being run over in the car should be used in Putins human shields speech.

" This is what Putin calls Ukraine evil human shields" !!

Poor old man accidentally getting in the way of a tank??

Maude6565 · 25/02/2022 18:19

My concern for more than a localised war has grown since the threat today of military action against Finland/Sweden if they were to join NATO. I know he has made this threat before but now I’m wondering if he would actually go ahead with it? And even if they didn’t join (and I have read there isn’t huge appetite for joining), has the invasion of Ukraine shown you do not have to have even join for him to invade.

Absolutely lose lose for everyone and my heart already goes out to everyone in Ukraine already suffering Sad

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 18:20

Stoltenberg is on the news now - stating that Putin needs to stop the attack before talks can be held. He is emphasising that Ukraine is an independent state and has to make its own decisions.
He says he understands that the Ukrainian people are in a desperate situation and they are better armed than they were in 2014. They will not send in NATO troops.
