@GallopingHighRoad

It does not make sense to buy property to house soldiers. The properties would be worthless following an invasion and they could just be occupied anyway. It would be a complete waste of money and offer no advantage.
They were buying properties near important areas e.g. near military bases and other strategic spots
MushMonster · 25/02/2022 18:29

I have the sunking feeling that he will not stop in Ukraine.

I think that is a very real possibility.

It wasn't just about using existing houses.

Once land has been bought, buildings and other installations can be built on them. People, supplies and equipment can be accumulated there before an invasion, without needing permission from or attracting the attention of an ordinary Finnish landowner.

It's cunning.

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 18:33

Yes. Baltic states are worried but Germany and Italy still concerned about imposing the toughest sanctions as they are so reliant on Russian gas.

Choccy21 · 25/02/2022 18:34

NATO Forces , including the British are already getting ready to defend neighbouring NATO countries.
I doubt Putin would be stupid enough to take on NATO. But the mans a maniac.
No NATO troops will fight in the Ukraine, as I understood it.

Blinkingbatshit · 25/02/2022 18:35

I so wish more of the Russian population had the courage to stand up and say stop. I totally understand their fear and reasons for not doing so though. Hopefully enough high rollers can be effected by sanctions that might influence Putin but I doubt it. All so sad.

Natsku · 25/02/2022 18:36

I think the Baltics have a bit less to fear at the moment as they are already in NATO (I think they all are?), Moldova could be a possible next move if Putin doesn't stop at Ukraine.

Dinosaurs1994 · 25/02/2022 18:37

How far could he actually go with this?

Invading and taking over an entire country uses a hell of alot of soldiers, weaponry, morale, resources etc.

Does he readily have the means to overtake multiple countries without stopping, if he chooses not to stop at Ukraine?

Lots are protesting in Russia which is amazing considering the risk to them. Quite in awe of them.
Choccy21 · 25/02/2022 18:43

Seriously, what would happen if Putin was “ taken care of”?. Why are the Russians allowing one man to cause so much misery to millions?
Even those closest to Putin, are they afraid of him? What would happen if there was a military coup? Unlikely I know.

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 18:44

Yes - have watched so many Russian protesters being whisked off into Police vans. Those protesters knew that would happen and they still protested. That is brave.

Choccy21 · 25/02/2022 18:45

If Putin invades another NATO country, wouldn’t NATO simply kill Putin with air strikes?
He would have to be insane to take on NATO.

wishtotravel · 25/02/2022 18:45

@Natsku
Yes, I too felt they were really brave to protest, good on them!

Which is why he will not set foot in a NATO country.

But today he has called for all countries that allied with NATO after 1997 to be de- registered. This would be places like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary.

NATO will obviously not de-register theses nations.

I'd be worried of I was Moldova though....very worried.

Interesting point. I suppose it destablises the property market for locals?

Unless Putin is trying to emulate the Roman army (wouldn't surprise me) where the legionnaries were given a 'pension' after 20 years' service which was their own farm, usually in a conquered province. The promised rewards buy loyalty.

Going off on a tangent, there an amazing book called The Power of Images In The Age Of Augustus, and it makes me think of Putin a lot. Augustus wasn't born Emperor - he was the first, and founded a monarchic dynasty on the bones of a squabbling, rancid Republic. He used images and ideology to promote his own personal power - he made himself larger than life.

I wonder how Putin sees his legacy? Is he interested in 'dynasty'? If not, why not?

ITSupport · 25/02/2022 18:55

Just as an observation….

I’ve noticed a distinction amongst friends and family……those younger than about 45 are all oh shit the world is about to end….. those over remember the Cold War. Many remember bay of pigs. To the older group this is - here we go again.

Ohmnomnom · 25/02/2022 19:00

Can NATO provide other support besides boots on the ground? Weapons, tech, intelligence?

Gingerwarthog · 25/02/2022 19:01

Yes and individual members have.

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 19:05

Has anyone seen the film " death of Stalin" it's wonderful and pretty much sums up why people close to this maniac will be scared to.

I'd love to know what actual military help the world has given to Ukraine.
Apparently some special equipment is going... but only now??
Too little too late??

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 19:06

Tiger - if you Google House of Commons Library / military assistance to the Ukraine there are several documents there and a lot of info that answers your question.
IcyWinterWonderland · 25/02/2022 19:20

Putin has just threatened to drop 'the father of all bombs'.

Juno22 · 25/02/2022 19:20

ITSupport that's an interesting observation. I'm in my mid 50s and don't remember the Cold War feeling like this. But I wonder if it's because we didn't have rolling 24 hours and social media so we were able to listen to the news, digest it and process it.
