I wish that before the end of this thread, fighting has stopped and peace can prevail. I also hope that Europe permanently ditches NS2 and the captain who fired on the guards on Snake Island is prosecuted for war crimes.

Damnloginpopup · 25/02/2022 16:26

Original thread here. Unbelievable it's only a day old.

DS is in the navy. I hope so too gallop

Deliberateplanning · 25/02/2022 16:27

I want all the Russians to stop and decide they're not doing this anymore, turn those tanks around and go back to Moscow.

Inthesameboatatmo · 25/02/2022 16:32

Thanks op.

Damnloginpopup · 25/02/2022 16:48

I want a coup and a head on a stake. And a free Ukraine respected by all.

Thought I couldn't be any more speechless. He's now threatened Finland and Sweden, that if they get involved he will have to take action against them, military and otherwise.

They were both once part of the Russian Empire. Probably the clearest sign yet he has no intention of stopping with Ukraine.

dreamingbohemian · 25/02/2022 16:54

Thanks OP!

To bring something forward from the last thread why do I think diplomacy is not likely to achieve much? Mostly because whenever a permanent member of the Security Council that's the US, UK, France, Russia, China -- has invaded or intervened in another country, the UN has not been able to do anything.

There have been many examples of this: the US/UK invading Iraq, Russia invading Crimea and Georgia, the NATO intervention in Kosovo; you can go back to all the Cold War interventions in Africa, Asia and Latin America as well. There is literally no example of a P-5 state allowing the Security Council to impede its own aggression.

A P-5 member can veto any UN action. The practical result is that their aggression cannot be stopped by the UN. This is why so many countries have been calling for UN reform for many years.

So it is not that I don't wish there could be a diplomatic solution, I just don't think we should get our hopes up about the UN.

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 25/02/2022 16:56

I believe I've read they've been suspended from the, Security Council. I'll try to double check.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 25/02/2022 16:57

Russia now suggesting if Finland or Sweden join nato there would be some kind of action.

CovidCorvid · 25/02/2022 16:58

Sadly I think the fighting will stop soon, but not for the reasons we want. But because Ukraine have been defeated. Soldiers in Kiev is not a good sign.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/02/2022 17:02

Thank you for the thread 🇺🇦 🇺🇦🇺🇦

dreamingbohemian · 25/02/2022 17:07

It's the Council of Europe that Russia has been suspended from.

And Eurovision!

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 17:11

He's threatening Sweden?

I'm surprised that with all their tech And army, Russia has her able to get through quickly?

Tigersonvaseline · 25/02/2022 17:12

I don't want anyone too fight really but can't we just pop on Ukraine uniform And Go And fight.

Just watching passively Feel's so impotent when frustrating!!

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 25/02/2022 17:14

He's fucking mad threatening Finland and Sweden! He's proper lost it now 😱 We're going to end up in another war.

Is this really what the Russians want? Seriously?!

I mean some British men did it in the Spanish civil war. They volunteered to go.

Don't think you can put on a military unit though, some weird laws about not being able to join a foreign army, but you can be a militant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Natsku · 25/02/2022 17:22

I live in Finland, until now I was feeling a vague slight worry about possible repercussions to Finland (and Sweden, but at least they don't share a fucking long land border with Russia) but now this threat? Its terrifying. Its not a new threat though, he makes it every so often, but now with the Ukraine invasion the threat actually feels credible.

I think I read that the Ukraine army allows foreign volunteers.
dreamingbohemian · 25/02/2022 17:26

@Natsku I've been reading that polls in Finland show increasing public support for joining NATO. Do you get this sense yourself?

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/02/2022 17:27

Apparently the PM of Ukraine has called for foreign volunteers to just turn up there.

Ramalamadingdongs · 25/02/2022 17:30

They are utterly desperate for help and the world is just standing by watching. I am ashamed to be British.

I think the public mood is changing towards joining NATO but that might change with this latest threat. I really could not guess if we are likely to join NATO in the near future or not - yesterday I would have said we most likely would.

Damnloginpopup · 25/02/2022 17:32

No way to get there in time I fear. I'm starting to wonder if NATO should have stepped in anyway, despite no mandate and the threat as Putin doesn't seem shy in making open threats to other countries. I mean seriously? Finland and Sweden? Maybe he is intending to keep going after all.

You can also donate, either to Ukrainian army if you feel comfortable doing that, or to charities in Ukraine that will help people. That's something concrete you can do.
