Those who volunteered in the Spanish civil war were not prosecuted if they returned, but the issue was the wives and children left behind as none were eligible for a war widow's pension.

I get a war widow's pension hard to believe in my 30's but it is what it is, but it is isn't much I'll be honest but better than nothing.

The government's stance that "they are supported" means not even a inkiling of prosecution unlike those who joined the war with the Kurds. I'd imagine though still no qualification for a widow's pension. However what's interesting is the encouragement to go by a government official. This was not the case for the Spanish civil war.

It wil start with the Ukrainian men here, but it will trickle out like it always does.

I've seen some upsetting footage of black people in Ukraine not being allowed to board trains to safety Sad

@NobodysGonnaKnow

We have an absolutely HUGE problem with immigration right now. We have no control over the people coming and I can understand not wanting to fling the doors open to more. Hopefully there is something being organised at the moment abd this is just a temporary visa situation.
This is absolutely absurd. Trying to get legally to the UK, in a way that would give your dc access to schools, family access to healthcare and the paperwork to legally rent a house is very controlled and pretty difficult.

No we do not. There aren't masses of Europeans trying to move in, and there are not masses of middle Eastern people banging on the door to get in.

We have the ability and space to help Ukrainian refugees, especially those who have family whose houses they will move in to/with. And the population will come out in its masses to support it, same as we did with children during the blitz, people will simply say "I have space, they can come".

daisychain01 · 27/02/2022 16:07

Can't someone give Putin a massive dose of COVID and finish him off.

Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 16:08

Found out. There were no prosecutions of British volunteers for the Spanish civil war. Not relevant to the current situation in Ukraine (but of interest to those with an historical interest in conflict), this letter indicates quite how astonishing this announcement from Liz Truss us, especially as Brits fighting against isis were most definitely not treated sympathetically.

Foreign Office, S.W.1.
19th January, 1937

Sir,

I am directed by Mr. Secretary Eden to inform you that since the issue of the statement regarding the application of the Foreign Enlistment Act of 1870 to the present civil war in Spain, he has had under consideration the question whether action resulting from this statement should be retroactive or whether only persons who volunteered for service subsequent to its issue should be liable to prosecution.

  1. Although the law was in force before the issue of the statement Mr. Eden is of opinion that its actual enforcement should not at this stage be made retroactive, on the ground that the fact of its application may not have been generally realised by the public in general. He considers, therefore, that the date of issue of the notice should be made the starting point for any measures against recruiting agents and volunteers, but that the right should be reserved in certain eventualities to prosecute persons who enlisted before the issue, and continue to serve after it.
  1. This latter suggestion is made in view of the possibility of it being necessary at some later date to endeavour to persuade persons serving in Spain to return to this country. It might, in order to achieve that end, be necessary to promise immunity to volunteers who return by a certain date, and in the case of those who did not do so, to base any prosecution on original enlistment and not exclusively on subsequent service.
  1. Mr Eden will be glad to learn the views of Secretary Sir John Simon on this question, and presumes that the latter will eventually inform the Director of Public Prosecutions of the final decision.

I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Walter Roberts

That is fake news. The video shows the ukrainians trying to stop the people on the platform getting crushed as the train leaves.

daisychain01 · 27/02/2022 16:10

There's plenty of room for them in all those luxury Oligarch West End properties - they don't have a use for them any more.

Wouldn't that be a schadenfreude moment!

Natsku · 27/02/2022 16:10

Do you a link that clarifies that Kassle because that rumour was worrying me and I'd like to be reassured

It's literally all over Twitter and you can clearly see what's happening in the video, for a start. I'm not even convinced that video is recent.

There's a lot of that stuff floating about, be careful with what you believe.

MarshaBradyo · 27/02/2022 16:11

It’s good the talks are happening

I’m holding onto that atm

Does anyone else feel a bit jumpy stressed?

Need to calibrate how I feel, maybe the highest alert thing got to me too much

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:12

I'm not saying there hasn't definitely been a lot of racism in the rhetoric around the "other" sort of refugee (i.e. the ones from iraq/afghanistan/syria), and we all know why that is (hint: racism), but that video is not what the people sharing it online say it is.

Oh yes.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 27/02/2022 16:14

@Laiste

A solicitor on twitter is reporting that: *@ukhomeoffice* is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa.

Apparently they are being advised to apply for the same visa used for seasonal fruit picking Hmm

If this is true i am ashamed.

I saw this too. But we know Priti Patel is a nasty piece of work. Her family came here themselves as refugees, but yes, draw up the drawbridge behind you.
Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 16:15

Let's halt the 'uk immigration issues' discussion before it grows please, if it's ok to ask, different issue for different times; the info of the issue at Gare du Nord is of course very relevant (and a typical govt fuck up!). UK said the other day Ukrainians are welcome, I guess it's just about getting some scissors into the office to cut the red tape. Quite honestly the way Ukrainians are standing tall in their country I'd expect most refugees turning round and going home as soon as they can.

Fferny2 · 27/02/2022 16:15

@Natsku it's not fake news. The. Bbc were reporting this today. Black & Asian looking individuals were not being let through the border controls and were being treated differently.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 27/02/2022 16:16

@TheSillyMastiff

Only because Ukraine borders the south to the black sea, but if Ukraine is taken and the Moldova you get another transport route, you also push up against the Romanian Border.

So you'd see Russia expand to border a significant part of Romania. Putting Romania in a similar position as the Ukraine with 3/4 of its land border connected to New Russia.

Well yes, if you're of the opinion that he wants to move into these countries one by one then that makes Moldova a possible next target.

It most certainly isn't a target because it gives any better access to the Black Sea though. A glance at the map should tell you that.

spleencoffin · 27/02/2022 16:17

Why the hell would there be nuclear war? Putin knows Russia would be destroyed. I'm doubtful anyone would actually 'push the button' anyway. It's all just a fear making exercise and posturing

I'm so sad for Ukraine but heartened by some of the great sides to humanity that have been shown

[quote vera99]Edwin Hayward 🦄 🗡@ukdomainnames·18hThis is remarkable. Priti Patel is accusing David Lammy of spreading misinformation, using as evidence a link to the official UK Gov webpage that proves him correct.

For Ukrainians in Ukraine without British connections, the normal complex UK visa application regime applies.

Priti Patel has never been the sharpest knife in the box (or a decent/ reliable one)

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:20

The. Bbc were reporting this today. Black & Asian looking individuals were not being let through the border controls and were being treated differently.

The fake news I'm talking about is specifically the video of people trying to get on a train, not anything else.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:21

I’m someone who’d like to get a better handle on immigration (specifically asylum claims) but I would open my arms and my home to any Ukrainian who wants to come. It’s not the time.

I'm the daughter of a refugee (the "wrong" sort!), so me too.

Goatling · 27/02/2022 16:22

Sorry for not rtft, I've been trying to avoid most of the news but I was wondering if the Ukrainian refugees would be allowed to come here and if so is there anywhere to register your ability to take in some of the women and children. I'm aware I'm probably being naive but I just feel so sad and helpless.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:23

Our government has decreed they can only do so with a visa (i.e. if they have family here, if they can do a job we need or if they are happy to pick fruit etc).

Laiste · 27/02/2022 16:24

These are people either hoping to (re)join their families here, or seeking shelter. The majority are going to want to go home to rebuild what's left of their homes when this is over.
