I think it's important to remember that not all refugees want to go home. My Dad never did again, even when a democratic government was installed. It was too painful for him.

Cbtb · 27/02/2022 16:25

The claims about stopping people of different ethnicities are worrying to me as well.

However there does need to be clarification

  1. Are these Ukrainian nationals? If so they will be required to stay and fight like all other Ukrainian males
  2. Are they Indian or Chinese or from the UAE? If so they yes they will be treated differently unfortunately - their country is supporting the attack, why should Ukraine let them leave?. It appears British Indians have been able to leave that suggests this approach may be being followed.
Cbtb · 27/02/2022 16:26

As in the talk of black urkranian women and children not being Allowed to leave is horrifying. But I can see why Indian nationals are not being allowed to do so.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 16:27

I worked alongside a lady from Czech who readily admitted her home country was absurdly racist. We know from many documentaries that there is a problem with racism in many Eastern European countries so sadly it wouldn’t surprise me if the reports are correct.

@Goatling

Sorry for not rtft, I've been trying to avoid most of the news but I was wondering if the Ukrainian refugees would be allowed to come here and if so is there anywhere to register your ability to take in some of the women and children. I'm aware I'm probably being naive but I just feel so sad and helpless.
It depends where you are. There is charity doing this but they only want hosts in cities- they are called Refugees at Home
Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:29

But I can see why Indian nationals are not being allowed to do so.

Well I can't, it's hardly their fault what their government do, is it. Hmm

By your logic every refugee from Afghanistan should have been rejected because their country is governed by the Taliban.

Galaxyrippleforever · 27/02/2022 16:29

I've seen videos of black people stuck on the wrong side of the border, including babies and children.

There are local refugee support groups in many towns and cities. Try googling or looking on FB for one near you. If there are call outs for that kind of help, they'd know
Alisae · 27/02/2022 16:31

I understand (and share) the instinctual reaction to fling open the gates and welcome all Ukrainians with open arms.

I also understand the reluctance some might have. Not any nonsense about the country being ‘full’, BUT the government has severely neglected to invest in infrastructure in many places, usually already poor, leading to already straining schools/hospitals/gps.

Also, many Ukrainians may want to return home.

But what happens if Russia prevails? Are we going to send them back to live under a brutal regime? It is probably not a terrible thing that the UK is making sure that those coming can live/contribute here on a more permanent basis if needed to.

Firefliess · 27/02/2022 16:33

Liz Truss's comments worry me. I'm not sure she's very bright or clued up. She's not been Foreign Secretary for long. Is there not a risk that encouraging British people to go and join the Ukrainian forces alongside arming those forces would be seen by Russia as tantamount to joining the war? Was that her intention?

Cbtb · 27/02/2022 16:34

No it’s not the same at all. People fleeting conflict or oppression in their home nation is not the same as citizens of an attacking nations allies trying to leave.

Unfortunately for the poor Indian students, who I’m sure are blameless, their government is supporting an attack against the country they are in. It is not in Ukraines interest to let their enemies go - which due to the actions of the Indian government these people have become.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 16:34

I certainly don’t think ‘we’re full’ but do think we’re having huge problems processing economic and illegal immigrants currently and even when the application fails they are still in the country five years later appealing. This country should certainly open its doors to refugees fleeing persecution and war and we do have legislation to do that. We need to figure out a way to give shelter to those who require shelter and effectively process those who we’ve decided need to return.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:35

BUT the government has severely neglected to invest in infrastructure in many places, usually already poor, leading to already straining schools/hospitals/gps.

OK, and? These people have just left a war zone for crying out loud. Maybe the rich will have to pay more tax to properly fund public services.

Also, many Ukrainians may want to return home.

Ok, and? So what if they do - that's OK, isn't it?

But what happens if Russia prevails? Are we going to send them back to live under a brutal regime? It is probably not a terrible thing that the UK is making sure that those coming can live/contribute here on a more permanent basis if needed to.

No, they stay here as long as they need regardless.

Goatling · 27/02/2022 16:36

Kassle that sounds very heartless, makes me ashamed.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 27/02/2022 16:39

Thanks for posting that letter about Spanish Civil War prosecutions @Damnloginpopup - very interesting.

Goatling · 27/02/2022 16:39

Greattimestroubledtimes I live rurally so I guess I'm no use.

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:41

People need to get real and realise the threat Putin poses to the democratic world. We have to accept changes that might make our daily lives uncomfortable in order to stop him.

Greattimestroubledtimes · 27/02/2022 16:43

Yes me too which is disappointing as we could easily do it
Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 16:45

BBC reporting missiles fired from Belarus into Ukraine.

I hope this means sanctions will be applied to them too.

Alisae · 27/02/2022 16:47

No, they stay here as long as they need regardless.

A very noble but ultimately completely impractical sentiment.

Ukraine is a large country with a huge population, who knows what the final number of people fleeing will be in the end?

It is fairly likely that Russia will ‘win’.

It would be very reckless to promise 44 million people that they could enter UK with no restrictions, and that they will be supported indefinitely.

Certainly, nowhere near that number would arrive in the UK, with most of them wanting to currently stay nearby so they can hopefully return to their homes.

But if Russia wins, then Ukraine will be no more. It will be a part of Russia. However many people manage to escape will not be able to go home.

It’s probably a good thing that the UK is thinking ahead about what would happen in that case (though I agree that those with family already in the UK should be sped to the front if the queue).

Kassle · 27/02/2022 16:49

Yes, because all 44 million of them will definitely come here.

The world changed on Thursday. Our lives changed. This is bigger than covid.

Gingerwarthog · 27/02/2022 16:52

EU to begin shipping arms to Ukraine. BBC online.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 16:56

I’ve just listened to the EU press conference on the BBC and hid it was strong!! One step away from announcing war quite honestly.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 16:56

Well that’s going to really really upset Putin.

I’m not sure there’s much difference between that and boots on the ground but I can’t say I disagree with them doing it.

NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 16:56

Already done. Announced a few minutes ago.
