Putin is going to argue that this is a war with Nato by proxy

Igotjelly · 27/02/2022 15:20

I see that Russia has supposedly dropped any conditions ahead of talks with Ukraine. Any idea what this means in practice?

JuergenSchwarzwald · 27/02/2022 15:23

I just read the Wikipedia synopsis of Threads. I won't watch it! I can see why people say it was traumatising. Not surprised if it was written by Barry Hines though - we had to read Kes/A Kestrel for Knave at school and that was miserable enough.

No idea but if I were Ukrainian I wouldn't be agreeing to meet on Belarussian soil! Wouldn't trust their president at all.
NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 15:25

You get the wrong side of the Russian regime and you end up dead. It’s as simple as that. I’m sure most of his cronies are terrified.

Protesters in Minsk, 'Glory to Ukraine'

@Damnloginpopup

We watched that at school. Seems incredible to imagine that. I remember the F111s hitting Libya from our local bases in Suffolk too. Putin needs to be made to watch that and Nena singing 99 Red Balloons (not being glib, that reached everyone). Watching the wall breached that night in 1989 on TV marked the ending of the cold war and effectively WW2 (that kind of being the remains of it in many ways). Now...I'm waiting for a Berlin wall breaching moment. A proper full stop to this.

Liz Truss, has used the word 'absolutely' in regards to a question about support brits going to take up arms in Ukraine. The foreign secretary. That is the stance, then, of the government. In case the magnitude of this is not appreciated I believe it is unprecedented. Visible support, almost encouragement to do privately what we cannot do officially no matter how much we want to. Short of giving the British Army a month off to go on holiday "see you later lads, don't worry about rushing back" I can't imagine a bigger response. Is there a precedent for this in the UK? I don't recall that happening over the spanish civil war for example but there are some very knowledgeable posters on here who may be able to confirm Orr correct.

I read that 2.5k British were part of the International Brigade that fought in the Spanish Civil War.

God this makes me emotional. Not in the name of the Belarusian people.

TheSillyMastiff · 27/02/2022 15:38

Yes we have a big bronze statue and memorial to them in our city of all the local men that went to fight.

It says "to the brave men who volunteered to fight for liberty in far lands"

And then all their names.

Enough is enough, one of his inner circle needs to novichok his toothbrush now.

vera99 · 27/02/2022 15:42

In the Road, I remember the wife killing herself first because she didn't want to live in the world that was coming just leaving the father and his boy to find the path to the ocean and hopefully salvation.

Great movie btw but a bit grim you have to find human hope in a post-apocalyptic world. This thread is a bit bonkers in places.

Since Putin is a mafia overlord amongst a mafia government who seems to have single handedely blown up the party I can't see him lasting too long and there will be zero chance of nuclear war.

Damnloginpopup · 27/02/2022 15:43

Yes, a large contingent went but I meant were they allowed with govt approval? I seem to recall not but not sure.

Absolutely wowed by the demonstration in Minsk! That link above by @DuncinToffee is something very important, thanks for posting it.

A solicitor on twitter is reporting that: @ukhomeoffice
is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa.

Apparently they are being advised to apply for the same visa used for seasonal fruit picking Hmm

If this is true i am ashamed.

MarshaBradyo · 27/02/2022 15:45

I recall watching Contagion a couple of times during pandemic, it lost all its fear factor

I haven’t seen Threads but have read One the Beach which was an incredibly sad and powerful take - not ready to go back there yet for a revisit

Hope all will pass. Bit stressful

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 15:47

@Laiste this has Priti Patel's mucky fingerprints all over it 🤨

vera99 · 27/02/2022 15:49

This is Chelsea Fucking FC's official statement. £1.5 billion asset right there Boris.

"Yes, a large contingent went but I meant were they allowed with govt approval? I seem to recall not but not sure."

It was illegal to fight on behalf of a foreign power so the volunteers were not helped - but I don't think any prosecutions were brought.

Riot police in central Moscow at the moment fending off demonstrations.

That is absolutely awful. :(
Ncwinc · 27/02/2022 15:55

Putin has his Russian critics imprisoned, poisoned or murdered. He’s had people poisoned in the U.K. Why would anyone who opposes him meet him in person?

Immigration minister Kevin Foster tweetet that 'fruit picking' comment last night and then quickly deleted it.
vera99 · 27/02/2022 15:56

Edwin Hayward 🦄 🗡@ukdomainnames·18hThis is remarkable. Priti Patel is accusing David Lammy of spreading misinformation, using as evidence a link to the official UK Gov webpage that proves him correct.

For Ukrainians in Ukraine without British connections, the normal complex UK visa application regime applies.

Think it's unprecedented (Liz Truss's statement). Those fighting in the Spanish Civil War could have faced prosecution on return but (and please let me know if I have this wrong) I don't think any were prosecuted or imprisoned.

That is disgusting, definitely not the time for visas for Ukrainians right now, most other countries in Europe realise that I think.
NobodysGonnaKnow · 27/02/2022 15:59

We have an absolutely HUGE problem with immigration right now. We have no control over the people coming and I can understand not wanting to fling the doors open to more. Hopefully there is something being organised at the moment abd this is just a temporary visa situation.
