I’m on my own (with the dog Grin) for the next few days. Happy to bore you, the most excitement I’m going to get this Christmas is opening my work Secret Santa present. If you don’t count starting on oestrogen gel, that’s the other thing I’ve got lined up.
Please join me 🤗

I, too, will be alone, apart from my chickens! As every year. Not a time of year I particularly look forward to, and try to view it as the lowpoint before the upturn to lengthening days and spring coming - the snowdrops will be coming out soon!
I am in the process of doing some renovation work on my house and Christmas Day will be spent plastering a couple of walls - my plastering skills are not to a professional standard, by any means, but my house is a wonky old cottage so my 'rustic' attempts will be in keeping!
But I will treat myself to fried kidneys for breakfast with roast guinea fowl for lunch and a glass or two of home made cider, which will make the plastering evem more idiosyncratic!
Enjoy your day @BuddahAtSea

Joy2TheWorld · 24/12/2021 12:13

I'll be by myself, not even any pets! Woke up with covid symptoms, loss of taste and smell, weird throat etc so won't be seeing anyone. Not really too fussed tbh, will try make the best of it with Christmas movies and an early night :-D

Tomanyhandbags · 24/12/2021 13:20

Also on my own going to have a nice leisurely breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs will have dinner when I am hungry and will watch loads of meaningless TV, but am expecting to have a little cry at some point as will miss late husband who recently passed away. No presents as don't want to open them alone.

BuddhaAtSea · 24/12/2021 16:28

@AsanteSana 😂 sounds brilliant! I’m partial to a bit of DIY, never tried plastering though. Is it something it’s ‘safely’ done in the winter? I was thinking difference in temperature and drying. How does that work?
I was walking the dog and you know something, I saw some buds on the trees. Not long now till spring :)

@Joy2TheWorld that’s pants about covid. What have you watched already and you recommend? I binge watched The Witcher, most delectable 😂😂. I got a pot of chilli and a very smelly dog, we’ve been in the rain for a long walk.
Do take regular paracetamol if you can, I had covid, it is a bit better with drugs 😂😂😂

@Tomanyhandbags sounds delicious! I got some IKEA frozen cinnamon rolls for breakfast, didn’t get any orange juice though. Oh well.
Sorry to hear about your husband!!! That must be really hard for you. How long were you married for?

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 16:58

Oh this is so cosy. I feel right at home.

I've deep cleaned the entire house. Got a lot of lovely food in but must mourn the TV offering...worst yet!

Planned to be alone but to go for some nice walks...sadly the noise the cat engine was making this morning has put me off going anywhere.

Tree looking lovely. Was given free mince pies in Waitrose too.

So a peaceful time. Rather fancy a sherry, though, which I haven't got...

BuddhaAtSea · 24/12/2021 17:37

@Yummypumpkin love the typo! 😂 I’m watching Dinner date. Because the remote is on the table and I can’t be bothered to get up. I waded through Waitrose yesterday, those mince pies looked nice!!! But I’m trying not to eat anything before 12 or after 6 pm, so I didn’t have any.
Are you guys dressing tomorrow, or is it a pyjamas day?

OP posts:
Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 17:55

A vital question. I was going to pyjama but then wondered about dressing up, closing the curtains and perhaps dancing to my Spotify list of the year (the one they do for you) and even putting on eyeshadow...which I haven't done in years.

I mean...there are no rules but the ones we make, right?

With WFH pyjamas no longer seems the rare treat it once was...in fact I've merely switched from one pair to another for the last two weeks...

LeQuern · 24/12/2021 18:02

I’m not alone alone but just me at my elderly parents. I’ll do all the cooking and they will pick like birds at the meal before retiring to watch the soaps.

I try to not be resentful of large families but my god, it’s a hard 48hrs for me. I secretly loved being forced to stay home alone last year and being able to spend the day exactly as I wanted. I went for a run, soaked in a bubble bath with drinkable bubbles, ate food I wanted, wore pjs, ate more food and went to bed at 10. It was lovely.

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas.

AsanteSana · 24/12/2021 18:21

Thank you @BuddahAtSea - I am using traditional lime plaster which needs to cure slowly and a cooler, more humid atmosphere is much better for it, but it takes weeks to dry out and cure properly, prior to painting.
Yes, some of the trees are starting to bud, particularly the Horse Chestnuts, and the hazels are covered in catkins, spring is coming!
What dog do you have? Would love to have a dog again, but, sadly, my work/life balance precludes it at the moment.
Happy, healthy, peaceful Christmas to all

BuddhaAtSea · 24/12/2021 18:27

@Yummypumpkin I actually had my hair cut today, and my eyebrows threaded, I feel half human. I’ll put some clothes on after parkrun tomorrow. No bra though 😂
@LeQuern have you seen Home for Christmas on Netflix? It’s a Swedish (I think) series. If I were you, I’d join them in the living room with headphones on and Netflix on my IPad , it’s got subtitles, it’s feel good without being nauseatingly cheesy 😂. Can you still do parkrun?

OP posts:
pastypirate · 24/12/2021 18:32

Can I join? Alone tonight and a bit demotivated.

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 18:47

@BuddhaAtSea the way you casually dropped in parkrun there was inspiring (although not so inspiring thatbI will do it). How bloody awesome that you got your hair done. Now that I will copy another year....

Welcome @pastypirate! Yes I was all set to get control of the remote for the fabulous Xmas telly and there is none!!

user1471511336 · 24/12/2021 18:53

Please can I join you?
Sorry for your loss @Tomanyhandbags.
I have no real plans for tomorrow as I'm really not looking forward to it.

Mumblechum0 · 24/12/2021 18:54

I love this thread, it’s an island of positivity in a sea of MN family Christmas angst 😊

I’m not alone, but just DH and I, and this has cheered me ip

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 18:55

@Mumblechum0 ditch him and join us!!!Wink

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 18:58

@user1471511336 it's funny isn't it that cycle of anticipation and deflation that starts as children (oh is there any torture worse than to be 7 and for Christmas to be a year away).

I don't know who here is on Twitter but Sarah Milligan is devoting all day tomorrow to chatting with people on their own...not in a sort of help the elderly way, but a joyful sort of, we can all do what we want and dip in and out joyous sort of way (but OP's thread is cooler!)

NMC2022 · 24/12/2021 19:01

I'm alone (well, except for the cat!)
Got a really bad headache tonight that won't shift annoyingly so I'm hoping the painkillers kick in as I want to make and eat nachos

Tomanyhandbags · 24/12/2021 19:04

BuddahaAtSea we were married just short of 18 years was going to have bucks fizz with breakfast but forgot the fizz head like a colander atm what sort of dog have you got?

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 19:06

@Tomanyhandbags I am glad to be on this thread with you
@NMC2022 I would pay anything for a cat this evening. Mine passed.

cissyandbessy · 24/12/2021 19:09

Ooh, was looking for a thread for people spending the day on their own. 👋🏼👋🏼 Me and the dog here, eating pizza and watching crap telly. Going to have a big walk tomorrow at the beach and then eat nice food. Might also do some house sorting and I have a piece of flat pack furniture to build if my mind starts feeling sorry for itself! Will put on Xmas carols and try and stay off social media too. Feels less alone to think there is a wee tribe of us in the same boat. I'm the only person I know in my circle spending the day alone.

Tomanyhandbags · 24/12/2021 19:18

It's nice not to be treated as elderly cos I'm not just widowed with no family or work colleagues as was a full time carer so it's lovely to be talking as just a normal person thank you everyone

Yummypumpkin · 24/12/2021 19:32

OK...no shaming, no judgment...what will you be eating tomorrow?

Erm...someone else go first?

nordica · 24/12/2021 19:35

I'm alone with the cats too, and have spent Xmas like this for years. Just had some M&S party food for dinner and now Bailey's Macarons (from Iceland) - they are so good! Now deciding what to watch on TV.
