I’m trying a really odd diet and hope it works

So, with the lockdown and stress and being with DH, I slowly started eating more sugar and bread. And wine.

I feel I could do with losing 3 kgs and detoxing my body. But I have no motivation to diet. I really don’t.

I couldn’t keep up with 16:8, 5:2 or calorie counting.

So I did a random search on the net hoping for a miracle, easy solution.

And I found this somewhat wacky diet I am trying out. I’m only in the second day. Five more to go!

First day was unlimited fruit (but only one variety). I slipped up in the morning and had a croissant and a sweet. But then stuck with watermelon all day. And took a brisk walk.

Today is veg in any form. Had tomato soup and beetroot salad. I’m feeling a tiny bit hungry. But much better than yesterday.

I feel less foggy and bloated. I can’t wait for tomorrow when I can have fruit And veg (except for potatoes and bananas). 😃

I have a strong suspicion that this diet is a poe.

Earlier today I assumed the OP was just having fun, but have now discovered it's got a name and history on Google.

It was apparently claimed to be backed by USDA and FDA and Johns Hopkins University, but this was found to be false...

But come on, the General Motors diet? I mean, I know chronic dieters are used to ignoring common sense and scientific evidence, but surely that must have given somebody pause?

I further suspect that the creator was so horrified by the scale of its success that they've gone into hiding Grin

Is this the GM diet? I have done this once (when I was younger and didn't cook) and did lose a couple but I gained it all back in weeks. :(

Polkadots2021 · 24/06/2021 20:57

@Gorgeouslilgirl

😂

Each day so special
Day 1 - Fruit day (but only one type of fruit if your choice). So easy and no decision fatigue
Day 2 - all veg except potatoes (can have one in the morning). A bit harder as this veg or fruit debate here illustrates.
Day 3 - fruits and veg. So easy again!
Day 4 - is jackpot. Six big bananas and milk. I’ll have yogurt instead. Maybe some cream too.

Day 5- unlimited eggs and 6 tomatoes

Day 4 is making me laugh. OP I love your thread Smile

Is it really called the General Motors diet? This is all so brilliantly mental.

gonow · 24/06/2021 21:01

Oh @DobbyTheHouseElk I remember that diet! The ritz crackers! A woman at work photocopied it and most of the office did it 😁

bookh · 24/06/2021 21:09

Op this is lovely, really made me smile. Type of crazy thing I would try.

I am giggling away at

No my tomato soup was just veg, tomatoes and water and salt. Oh and black pepper, and basil, and lemon juice, just veg!

DH wanted to try eating just meat. I smiled and nodded. First night, three beef burgers, with cheese, and relish, and buns, and chips......

Seesawmummadaw · 24/06/2021 21:18

Watching with interest! Your got this op. Dh will help you!

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/06/2021 21:19

@Kentuki brilliant 🤣🤣🤣

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/06/2021 21:22

What's Day 6?
A bottle of Prosecco, a family size (literally) bag of crisps, a block of cheese, five ginger nuts and anything else that 'needs finishing up'?
I could do that! Grin

I remember it had ice cream as well every evening. I think you were meant to lose 10lbs in a week or something. By eating grapefruit, ritz crackers and peanut butter.

It didn’t work for me. Really odd combination of foods. Possibly sponsored by Ritz and Sunpat. Grin

TreeSmuggler · 24/06/2021 22:27

Well I know when I want nutrition advice I always go to General Motors.

Right now I'm doing the Madza diet, it's where you go to drive thru in your Mazda.

KarmaViolet · 24/06/2021 22:42

@DobbyTheHouseElk I did that one in the 90s too - you were meant to lose 10lb in 3 days. I was temping at a hospital, and it was called the British Heart Foundation Diet, it went round on on the fax machines.

Turns out it was nothing to do with the British Heart Foundation who have disowned it.

You can find it here for some nostalgia for ritz crackers, beetroot and hardboiled eggs (this one says carrots but my poorly photocopied fax said beetroot) blog.slimmingsolutions.com/all/three-day-diet-free-meal-plan-aka-heart-foundation-diet/

Fozzleyplum · 25/06/2021 00:50

There are some very helpful ideas for this sort of diet here.

groundcontroltomontydon · 25/06/2021 03:56

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad
As you were

AwkwardSquad · 25/06/2021 04:49

Has anyone else succumbed to the watercress soup diet? As I recall, it’s basically fasting + watercress soup. Unsurprisingly, it does work - temporarily.

OP, I second the pp who said that a lot of cherries can have an unfortunate effect on the digestion. I once happily ate my way through a large bag of delicious fresh cherries whilst in the car on the way to see my grandparents, and spent most of the visit in the loo.

OP please tell us how your diet goes today Grin

Gorgeouslilgirl · 25/06/2021 06:56

I managed to stick to only vegetables yesterday. Yay!

I was very thirsty all day. I downed mugs of herbal tea.and had lots of water. Probably double the amount I usually have.

Still feeling mighty thirsty. With a bit of a headache this morning.

We usually go out for coffee on Friday mornings. And there is a lovely bakery right next to the cafe. It will be a test!

I can’t deny that I am thinking of buttery, flaky croissants. Or a deeply satisfying Jesuit with an almond custard hidden delicately between folds of pastry topped with toasted nuts. Just the right amount of sweetness to accompany an espresso.

But I cannot face your mirth, so hopefully I’ll hold out 😂

OP posts:
itwa · 25/06/2021 07:00

I don't think I've ever had a 'deeply satisfying Jesuit' Grin

BikeRunSki · 25/06/2021 07:19

I had to stop reading this last night, as I was laughing so hard I kept waking DH up. It cheered up the end of a 5:2 fast day.
Good luck with the crazy do we today OP.

YesClemFandango · 25/06/2021 07:23

Ok I kept a straight face all the way through but you got me with deeply satisfying Jesuit

Keep up the good work OP!

WineAcademy · 25/06/2021 07:28

This is my next diet.

I’m trying a really odd diet and hope it works
Crowsandshivers · 25/06/2021 07:31

This is bonkers!! Does it repeat the following week?

picklemewalnuts · 25/06/2021 07:43

@Luckyelephant1

I love that your DH seems to eat half the stuff you wanted to eat 😂
Yes your husband is really supportive! Kind of!
