The first ones that stand out for me were one which was a huge bun fight about piercing babies ears.

The other one was by an obviously depressed mum whose house was a tip and the social worker was coming to visit soon (there was no sympathy to be had)

OP posts:

Terry saying hi.

What were the first mumsnet threads you remember reading?
RosieLemonade · 16/05/2021 16:29

I googled something about warm baths while pregnant. I was so scared I would boil the baby! The first AIBU I read was about not letting children believe in Father Christmas.

MyGoMargot · 16/05/2021 16:48

Googled something about BF and came across threads by Hunkermunker and (?) Tiktok? Back in 2006 it would’ve been

Remember lots of threads already mentioned and agree there were some astonishingly witty posters back then... was a joy just to read the threads!

Mine was Fatballs! Still makes me chuckle.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/05/2021 17:24

It was a v sad thread from a woman whose family or ILs (cant remember which) were simply awful and abusive on so many levels. I think they lied about some family health stuff which caused the op extra stress whilst pg. She posted a few years later saying how much better she was doing after going NC which was really lovely to read.

ShutUpAlex · 16/05/2021 17:27

I think mine was Mexican house thief.

WestendVBroadway · 16/05/2021 17:41

The first thread I read was about a lady with triplet girls and only two were invited to a party. The OP thought there was a mistake as the other was who was more friendly with the party girl had been excluded. I was not familiar with DD 1, DS 2 etc. I got confused about who she was taking about, she accused me of not RTFT( I had no idea what that meant either. ) I thought DD 1 meant the the one she had mentioned first. She then argued with me about it being obvious they were in age order. I was a bit meh, as I stupidly thought triplets were the same age. Grin I didn't post anywhere on MN for ages after that as I was scared I would say the wrong thing.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/05/2021 17:43

The living room chairs that were listed on the M&S site for 50p, with sooo many posters placing orders just to see what happened when they realised the error.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 16/05/2021 18:02

Cod's threads with her terrible typos.
Mars Lady's recipes.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2021 18:15

I didn't really get all the lemon drizzle stuff or the pregnant cousin, it all went a bit too far I think.

Stratters was one of the first people on here I conversed with. About rubbish telly IIRC.

EastWestWhosBest · 16/05/2021 19:39

I started here when I was TTCing and never really left the conception area.

But when I did the first thread I remember was one where a woman wanted to extend her kitchen into the shared passage next to her house. Her argument, as I recall, was that she had the flying freehold over the top of the passage, also that the neighbours didn’t use the passage.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/05/2021 19:40

It's amazing that the one post about the Mexican house thief (which was on a thread about something else, not a whole thread in itself) is the first thread so many Mnetters remember reading.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2021 19:54

I have never known what Mexican house thief was about. Can you summarise? Will I wake the baby up laughing? If I had a baby that is.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/05/2021 19:58

I think it was a thread about general cheeky fuckery.

Someone posted that they had a second house in Mexico and they let another family go and spend a holiday there once. Some time later, they actually went to the house in Mexico themselves and the other family was there holidaying - they'd copied the key or something?

Or it was a third party this had all happened to.

Somehow it has become MN legend.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 16/05/2021 19:59

Hope you didn't spit tea all over your keyboard at that @Sparklingbrook.

My laptop is unharmed. Grin Sounds all very unlikely but classic MN.
YessicaHaircut · 16/05/2021 20:10

It was a really good CF wedding one, where the groom had sent out a mass email to lots of his friends who weren’t invited to the wedding or reception, asking them to contribute towards a new camera for the happy couple to take photos with on their honeymoon. It was hilarious as lots of the friends took this to mean that they were invited to the wedding, leading to lots of huffy messages from the groom and everyone getting very offended by his cheeky fuckery!

Howshouldibehave · 16/05/2021 20:21

The very first thread I remember reading was by a woman who was going to inherit some money or a property or something but her step son’s mum wanted her to sign it over to him?! They were knocking on the door in the end-I never found out if it was true or not!

There have been some good childcare ones as well. Usually at the end of August when some CFs decide that they don’t want to pay for breakfast club when their child starts school and tell some unsuspecting SAHM that they have selected her to provide them free childcare for ever more!

SarahAndQuack · 16/05/2021 20:52

I remember the one where a woman (I can't remember her MN name but know her RL name quite well!) went to the pool, removed her bikini bottoms and folded them neatly, and it took her about five minutes to wonder WTF she'd been thinking.

Also BoF and the Sean Connery 'shat upon' pouffe. That was fucking hilarious.

And the 'cutted up pear' thread. I joined MN a bit before I started to TTC and it's taken me a good long time to acquire my own toddler but OMG, the preparation was well worth it! Grin

I also remember Rhubarb and Custardo constantly baiting Dittany, and many, many, many FWR rabbit holes.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 16/05/2021 21:01

Years back there were lots about how working mothers were the devil.

But since I came back to MN a few years ago there have been a few that have caught my imagination:

Chester Zoo

the woman who worked in a garage and was the only one not invited to a colleague's wedding

the woman who was constantly getting her colleague lunch and not being reimbursed

the woman who was giving a friend's dd a lift to an activity - the "friend" didn't have a car and was totally unreasonable about the poster stopping giving a lift

more sadly, Jenny Wren

brittanyfairies · 16/05/2021 21:29

A poster called The Wilted Rose, she had a terrible story and I remember crying reading her story. She was actually just ripping off posters who were sending her money to try and help.

Cubes of poo had me crying with laughter.

I remember a poster called expatinscotland who had a terrible time and sadly lost her daughter.

A poster called Riven who had a seriously disabled daughter. It all got a bit complicated for her and I hope she still uses the site under a different name. Her husband wrote a science fiction book I really enjoyed.

I never like Cod she was nasty to people she didn't consider in the in crowd.

And posters like littlelapin really showed their true colours during melodies. Oh my goodness what a Christmas that was.

ViciousJackdaw · 17/05/2021 00:53

Mine's a sad one - Mrs Presley. Often referred to when posters complain about 'children on leads'.

FictionalCharacter · 17/05/2021 02:33

Cutted up pear was my favourite of all time.
Penis beaker was unforgettable- so preposterous - and there were some amazingly TMI replies about post-coital ablutions
There was a great childbirth story where the OP’s baby allegedly shot out like a cannonball.
Large clay cock
A thread about bra fitting that genuinely changed my life, because I discovered I’d been wearing the wrong size for years.

MoltenLasagne · 17/05/2021 03:28

The very first thread I properly remember was the dinosaurs and religion one but I think I found my way here looking up installing ovens of all things...

Honestly rereading these has made me realise how much the comradery of MN got me through some really tough, lonely times. I don't think I even started posting properly until five years or so ago, but there was something about reading women giving advice and supporting other women that just made me feel less alone.

mathanxiety · 17/05/2021 05:58

A series of threads posted by a poster called TheRealMe. Her husband was an arsehole. There were some great poetic contributions. I'd love to know how she's doing, twelve (?) years on.

I remember one posted by a pregnant woman who went to the US on holiday and ended up having her baby there. It all ended much better than it started out. Hope she's doing well.
