What were the first mumsnet threads you remember reading?

The first ones that stand out for me were one which was a huge bun fight about piercing babies ears.

The other one was by an obviously depressed mum whose house was a tip and the social worker was coming to visit soon (there was no sympathy to be had)

OP posts:

The one were a school mum fully expected another school mum to childminder her children without even asking! I'm sure it had WORK in the title.

I loved Anyfucker's comments to anything!

TeenMinusTests · 15/05/2021 07:25

The one that got me hooked was I think from MrsDeVere and it was about her neighbours building a 'gym' in their back garden which was actually a fully functioning bungalow.

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 15/05/2021 07:26

Lemon Drizzle cake.

I miss Marmalade Twatkins. She was very funny.

I joined while pregnant in 2011, and for a long time was only on Childbirth threads, which had some excellent advice about CS and inductions, so I thought of Mn as very serious and well-informed.

Then I clicked into a thread by a woman who regularly passed her friend driving in the opposite direction at roughly the same point on the school run or her commute in the mornings. Then one morning she passed her friend and drove on, only to see her friend driving towards her again slightly further along the road. She was absolutely certain her friend had passed her twice, and that it was impossible for her to have done so — no turnings, nowhere to u-turn.

The thread got very exercised about time slips and Doppelgängers and deja vu and whether it was a premonition of death, and people having visions of their granny the moment she was dying 100 miles away, and everyone was wooing the hell out of one another.

Then the OP came back hundreds of posts later and said her friend had pranked her by taking a short cut down a tiny farm track to race around and ‘reappear’ on the same stretch of road, and everyone was most disappointed. Grin

@DandelionRose* There was also a regularly annoying poster who once filled up 40 pages or 1000 messages of nonsense one after the other, just so they could get to close the thread when a thread was not going their way early on.*

I remember her and that thread!

When I joined, as others have said, MN appeared very cliquey, lots of in jokes. Posting on a thread just to be ignored, or worse still kill the thread. That doesn't appear to happen as much now.
It seemed back then a much smaller world, there were lots of regulars. Much more inclusive feel about it now.

The first thread I remember very clearly was a long running thread about a cheating husband - it turned out to be a troll and was discovered by posters meeting up with her to offer support!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 15/05/2021 07:37

I remember arguments about Fruit Shoots and Pom Bears. About ten years ago, IIRC.

Baboutheocelot · 15/05/2021 07:50

One of the first I remember was the one where a poster had bought a house with some land but, a woman was keeping her horse on the land and she was being really difficult about moving the horse somewhere else. It turned in to loads of threads where everyone was planning a mumsnet festival on the field once the horse was gone.

Trumpton · 15/05/2021 08:26

The one that I remember the most was EarthMotherImNot’s thread on the drug dependant baby she fostered.
It’s Here
Heartbreaking and heartwarming.
It ran for three years and sadly Emin died later that year.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 15/05/2021 08:38

When I first joined Cod was very much Queen Bee and it was very cliquey. She stopped posting when she was outed and I did miss her.

TheMerryWidow1 · 15/05/2021 08:39

Softzilla is the one I always remember, Op had to stop posting as it was going down the legal route, often wonder what happened

Tangledtresses · 15/05/2021 08:50

I think this one was around the time of penis beaker

It was about lube and a fish slice?

But I first came into Mumsnet back in 2005.... it was mainly about Gina Ford back then

altiara · 15/05/2021 08:55

The threads that got me back into mumsnet were- OP kept having her lunch stolen at work and she was about to set something up to find the criminal and I lost the thread
-the other was a thread on making cakes in sandwich toasters
My friend sent a link to penis beaker so I got hooked back into mumsnet and never left!

Councilworker · 15/05/2021 09:02

Shiny and the penguins thread. That must have been about 12 years ago. Her boyfriend didn't realize she was texting from a new number but replied to a flirty message and proceeded to arrange a date with what he thought was another woman but was actually Shiny. The date was to meet at a zoo outside the penguins. It went on for many threads and he did turn up and was subsequently dumped

MoesBar · 15/05/2021 09:05

Cutted Up Pear

I was in the throws of serious depression at the time and that thread had me howling with laughter, and I’ve been here ever since.

I think it’s in Classics? It was on AIBU when I read it.

snowone · 15/05/2021 09:07

Penis beaker 🤣 husband though I was daft sat laughing at my phone!! 🤣🤣

CandyLeBonBon · 15/05/2021 09:08

Been here since 2009 I think.

I think the first 'big' thread I remember is the booble plate down the back of the toilet one. I participated in 'cancel the cheque', and I and the Maui bridezilla wedding saga.

I'm sure there are more but I've been here so long they all merge into one!

DottyDoom · 15/05/2021 09:10

The one where the OP’s DH ate a fat ball.

This was magnificent

CandyLeBonBon · 15/05/2021 09:10

@Bluefinger

Luckymcducky did you not get baby centre boards recommended? They were my training grounds for mumsnet lol
I remember babycentre! I won a tumble dryer for my babycentre blog with my eldest! He's 19 now!
cnversation · 15/05/2021 09:10

Dear Cattheifkeith. Remember her threads well

CandyLeBonBon · 15/05/2021 09:12

And I loved the spangran safa with her paella pan even if it was a load of old guff!!!

mogtheexcellent · 15/05/2021 09:33

I can't remember the first threads but I was pre Penis beaker. I moved over from hitched after I got married after aibu was recommended by a fellow hitcher.

Threads I remember: a lady who had to eat pizza from the food recycling bin for dinner. She was being financially abused. The parking on Isle of Wight one. This is where penguin bollards first made an appearance I believe.

There's been a lot of laughter but also some sadness and hope. I've learnt a lot from various boards legal, feminist, Sporner corner...Grin

TotoAnnihiliation · 15/05/2021 09:35

@whoisyennefer the stunt pineapple and stunt washing up area area was the thread that converted. I found my way here after having a miscarriage and decided to look at the rest of the site. That thread made me smile at a time when I was really sad and I decided I had found my people.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 15/05/2021 09:39

The one I remember and eventually joined mumsnet for was the woman who was taking her son to an outdoor party and he wanted to take a massive water gun but he wasn’t going to use it on people

She even said he was a bit of a handful!

Thread full of people going ‘no 😱’ and her going ‘but....’

taxi4ballet · 15/05/2021 09:40

I can't really remember, but it would probably have been something about the age young ballet dancers start to wear pointe shoes. Searching online for help on that topic is how I stumbled on MN in the first place.

HazeyJaneII · 15/05/2021 09:44

Lots of Breastfeeding/Bottlefeeding threads which would explode
The Wankers threads
