Trumplosttheelection · 10/03/2021 20:55

I'm not saying what this relates to and I'd ask everybody who knows not to say either for obvious legal reasons but I just wanted to post that I feel v sad about the news tonight.
I know there are posters who will be personally affected and just wanted to say my thoughts are with all who've loved and lost tonight. I wish it was otherwise.

ThanksThanksThanks

I agree entirely!

@Moonmelodies

*Drives it home, doesn't it. Naming dead women, counting them, finding the weekly average of femicide. Men kill women because they can. Do we still have to caveat with Not My Nigel, NAMALT?* They kill more men though don't they?
Oh sorry I forgot to centre men in my post about naming and counting dead women. I must try harder.

Alec

You have just linked to ‘Press gazette fighting for journalism’!

Haffiana · 10/03/2021 22:29
@Haffiana Is your desire for gossip and speculation so great that you don’t care that subsequent trials could be compromised by what is posted online?

The jurors (if it gets to that stage) will be made up of people who read the internet. Let’s not risk jeopardising justice.
They will also read newspapers, Twitter and the man in the pub.

The trial will be years from now.

Do you imagine that MN is somehow different?

Evening, everyone.

And our deepest sympathies to anyone reading who was friend or family to Sarah.

We understand that people will want to share their sadness and anger at a time like this. That's absolutely fine, of course. We would ask that people are careful not to post in a speculative way about events as they unfold, however, and also to bear in mind that people who knew Sarah have been posting here already in the last few days, so please do be sensitive to that and thoughtful in your own posting. Thank you.

Rest in peace, Sarah. Flowers

Thank you @HebeMumsnet

This is why BBC coverage has far fewer details then some other (less risk averse, shall we say) outlets.

No it isn't - BBC coverage is dictated by a set of rules that has nothing to do with social media or CJS.

Nicknacky · 10/03/2021 22:32

@Haffiana The newspapers will not be publishing anything that can prejudice a trial. Have you not heard of sub judice?

But you didn’t answer. Is your desire for gossip more important? The only people that truly matter and deserve to know what happened are Sarah’s family.

namechangerforthisconfessionn · 10/03/2021 22:35

My heart goes out to Sarah's family, friends and all who know her. Such devastating news Thanks

HeathIns · 10/03/2021 22:35

News coverage tends to go very quiet after initial reports and statements have been announced.

oil0W0lio · 10/03/2021 22:35

Awful and horrifying, my heart goes out to her and her family

ladygoingGaga · 10/03/2021 22:37

Just so desperately sad, for the friends, family and loved ones.
I hope somehow our collective thoughts can help in someway, know that women around the country stand together for her.

CP26 · 10/03/2021 22:38

Horrific news. Rest in peace Sarah.

alexdgr8 · 10/03/2021 22:38

@HeathIns

How is speculation on MumsNet or any social media damaging to an ongoing police investigation?

Defence often claim that press and social media gossip and speculation creates unfair bias at trial.

i wish people would read up on and try to understand the implications of strict liability under the Contempt of Court Act 1981. these forums are regarded as publications for the purposes of the Act. and any breach may give rise to criminal and /or civil proceedings, against the poster individually and/ or MN as publisher. also may impede the judicial process. whether you agree with it or understand it, or not, that is the law, and ignorance is no defence at law. once a person has been arrested the strict liability rule applies, until any legal proceedings are concluded. do you not want justice to be served in this case ? if so please exercise some restraint.

Have you also knowledge of a case that was stopped because of postings on MN?

Nicknacky · 10/03/2021 22:46

@Haffiana I have no idea if any trials have ever been stopped by mumsnet. Not a clue. But would you really want to take the chance?

Will you answer my question then?

Liquorishtoffee · 10/03/2021 22:47

A man and a woman have been named - at least 2 national online papers have done so.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2021 22:48

This is terrible news. My thoughts are with Sarah's family and friends.

HeathIns · 10/03/2021 22:49

Alex I agree! 👍🏻
The quote you used was from Haffiana who doesn’t agree and can’t be persuaded otherwise.

Haffiana · 10/03/2021 22:50

alexdgr8

Do you understand the difference between speculation on public media prior to, and an actual ongoing court case?

None of what you quoted applies to this thread.

chocolateoranges33 · 10/03/2021 22:50

Terrible news. Thoughts are with her loved ones

DeRigueurMortis · 10/03/2021 22:50

Please can people stop bickering on this thread.

If you want to start a thread discussing general/wider implications of social media posts in relation to ongoing investigations/arrests then do so.

My many condolences to Sarah's family and friends Thanks
