I'm not saying what this relates to and I'd ask everybody who knows not to say either for obvious legal reasons but I just wanted to post that I feel v sad about the news tonight.
I know there are posters who will be personally affected and just wanted to say my thoughts are with all who've loved and lost tonight. I wish it was otherwise.

ThanksThanksThanks

RECLAIM THESE STREETS MARCH

SATURDAY MEET AT 6PM CLAPHAM COMMON BANDSTAND.

Please wear a mask. For all us women threatened on the streets.

HeartsAndClubs · 10/03/2021 21:24

Organising a march for what exactly? Confused

When something like this happens it’s inevitable that people will talk about it because A, it’s not actualy a common occurrence hence why it makes it into the headlines. And B, When someone who is meant to be enforcing the law is at the centre of suspicion it creates a new culture of fear and mistrust which shouldn’t exist.

OhCaptain · 10/03/2021 21:24

What’s with all the grief hi-jacking?!

I'm so sickened to think of the latest update. I've lived for many happy years and walked all the streets that have featured in the news all week, day and night. I'm haunted by this story -just cannot imagine what this poor family must be feeling right now. Just horrific. A few friends who live locally still have been "certain" for days this would be the outcome but I'd cling onto hope.
I can't fathom how this was possible in such a dense area 😔

grandpacificpineapple · 10/03/2021 21:26

@lljkk

Why were other threads deleted, what was so worthy of speculating on?
They speculated to an extent that they could have compromised legal processes and proceedings jeopodaes
Brunt0n · 10/03/2021 21:27

I’m sad. And i’m also fucking furious

grandpacificpineapple · 10/03/2021 21:27

I am a man, who lives in the same area. I've been utterly shocked and left speechless. I was actually running on the common at the time.

My heart goes out to the family. I can't even imagine the hell that they have been through. It makes you question the whole of society. Women should feel safe.

Tonight I will find a few minutes to think of the family

Trumplosttheelection · 10/03/2021 21:27

It's not grief hijacking or being a grief vulture or rubber necker to simply be sad about an awful event and to say as much.

It is sanctimonious cant however to come on to a thread like this and post your criticism. It's really not about you.

Awful news.

Are all female abduction and possible murder cases so high profile though? Most don't make headline news. They happen all the time. Not to downplay this, obviously, but the way the case is being reported makes it seem like the event is a rarity. Would men still be getting away with this shit so easily if each instance were so heavily publicised?

augustusglupe · 10/03/2021 21:28

My DD is in London. I'm constantly getting on her nerves telling her to be careful getting home and to get an Uber after dark.
I've been praying for some kind of good outcome to this news all week. I've just read the headline now. I'm so so sorry for that poor girl and her family.

scalphelp · 10/03/2021 21:28

It’s chilling that everything was fine literally a week agoSad

The statement from Cressida Dick tonight was incredibly upsetting. The fact that it will take “considerable time” to identify the remains is horrifying

I work from home and couldn’t even concentrate as I was just refreshing the news all day! i can’t imagine how her loved ones have been feeling as the past day unfolded

grandpacificpineapple · 10/03/2021 21:29

Oh ffs!
Posing a risk to current legal proceedings

Dingleydel · 10/03/2021 21:30

HeartsAndClubs I suppose you are correct because most women who are murdered are killed by partners or family and most don’t make headlines. If only we could end male violence.

PurpleDaisies · 10/03/2021 21:30

It’s absolutely awful. Thinking of her family.

HeartsAndClubs · 10/03/2021 21:30

The thing is, we don’t know anything, and anything we need to know will come out in the trial.

People are rightly furious and upset that a woman could be in danger walking home at night, but we don’t know that the suspect or their partner wasn’t known to her. We don’t know that she was actually taken from the street. So while it’s obviously incredibly sad for her family, and chilling that the suspect is someone who should be the very person upholding the law, other than that there is very little that can be said.

bumblenbean · 10/03/2021 21:31

Utterly awful; poor woman. Abhorrent and depressing that (some) men think they have the right to snuff out someone’s life. I lived in Clapham for years so can picture her route all too well.

Some really interesting posts on Twitter about the usual victim blaming claptrap that has predictably been spouted too. Same old tired cliches

Yes, the response has been spectacular. The met have had a significant amount of officers out simultaneously at several locations etc. I don’t think this is standard fare, I guess the publicity and one of their own being involved has spurred them on to be as thorough as possible
willibald · 10/03/2021 21:33

So sad.

Dave would you read this article and share it with your male friends. Men need to know how women feel. Thank you. GUARDIAN article women tell men how to make them feel safe
HeartsAndClubs · 10/03/2021 21:34

Not to downplay this, obviously, but the way the case is being reported makes it seem like the event is a rarity. Would men still be getting away with this shit so easily if each instance were so heavily publicised? actually random disappearances/abductions and murders are incredibly rare. 96% of women who are murdered are killed by someone they know.

And I would say that the case hasn’t actually been that high profile. Obviously the locals put up posters and the local news were aware, but it never really made it to mainstream news until the weekend when the police were out in force. And more recently because the searches branched out to a different area of the country and a police officer has been detained it was impossible not to keep it out of the news. Doing so would have sparked allegations of a cover-up or “protecting their own.”

OhCaptain · 10/03/2021 21:34

@brokenkettle I agree. I’m a bit bemused by this reaction.

I’m not in the U.K. so maybe that’s why.

@Trumplosttheelection it’s not about you either. That’s the point of the perceived criticism.

GappyValley · 10/03/2021 21:36

@Supersimkin2
After that hideous creative writing victim blaming post by you this morning on the thread got pulled, I’m surprised to see you suggesting a March in support of women in the area
You were saying the area had nothing but ‘a pram and lorry and a Rottweiler’ 12 hours ago

Haffiana · 10/03/2021 21:37

@DavidsSchitt

Just leave it for goodness sake. There's a reason these threads get pulled, what is to be gained by starting another
What reason?
