We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

East Manchester towards Peak District. Christ, I wish I had your problem. Awesome countryside. Good schools. Fab city nearby.

Old, big, quirky houses cost a fortune to heat and maintain.

Something like this isn't so massive, but it's in a lovely part of the countryside (Crieff).

Do consider that while in the middle of nowhere with lots of land is great when you're fit and well, it can be a pain in the arse when you get older.

I don't want an estate .. I think I worded that wrong .. great suggestions
Def 3 beds but ideally 4 as one needs to be an office .

Can get a lot of half decentish properties in the northeast for that kind of money and Newcastle airport isn't too far away.

I second Suffolk. This is a lovely village near to Southwold.

Knaresborough/Harrogate:

6 bedrooms for £610,000

Fairly straightforward journey to Leeds/Bradford airport, and trains from Harrogate run to London.

Have mine! We're about to go on the market - 5 double beds, double garage plus lovely garden and views over fields.
We're in the Vale of Belvoir in Leicestershire. Half an hour from Nottingham and 20 mins from Grantham (1hr 10 by train to London)

How do your DC feel about you leaving the area they grew up in? I needed my "old" friends both socially and emotionally during the long uni holidays. I was also able to pick up my old waitressing job to top up my finances. I would have coped (well I wouldn't have had a choice) if my parents had moved away from my home town whilst I was still at Uni, but am glad they waited until a few years afterwards

IntermittentParps · 01/09/2020 10:27

Advicewouldbeappreciated, can you expand on that?

shesellsseashells99 · 01/09/2020 10:34

South West in NORTH Devon you could get something amazing for that.

Divebar · 01/09/2020 10:34

You’ve really got to do your homework. I am from one of the places mentioned ( Midlands) and I’m now down south. I wouldn’t move back even though I could afford a much bigger house because seriously there is not the type of services that I like. ( and the nearby town has dozens of empty shop units) So think about the things that are important to you that you currently take for granted before you go falling in love with a gorgeous house.

worriedmama1980 · 01/09/2020 10:35

Sheffield/outskirts - two hours by train to London if needed, gorgeous countryside to explore. Beautiful stone houses - something like this? www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72692385.html

I will say though, most people don't spend their whole lives in their house. I would do a bit of serious thinking about the weather, proximity to shops, need to be in the car, friends, etc etc.
