We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

Not an easy commute to anywhere, lol, but nice house in a nice part of the country and waaay under budget

Pretty properly remote - but lovely, and nice area

Leicestershire or Lincolnshire. Look at Oakham or stamford

minnieok · 01/09/2020 10:41

Many places, away from the motorways and intercity trains that is possible but don't expect acres for that budget. Herefordshire, Shropshire, into Wales is an idea, parts of Somerset are still reasonable but others very £££. Otherwise Lincolnshire, Teeside, NW away from Manchester/Cheshire. NE but away from commuter towns to Newcastle. Much of Scotland. Essentially if you are within an hour of major employment areas prices are higher.

@Advicewouldbeappreciated yes it's a serious question .. it's not a massive amount for the south !! Why can't I have a nice house that I've worked hard for without someone being bitter !!🙄🙄

Literally the middle of nowhere, but look at it, and way under budget too...

ureterr1blemuriel · 01/09/2020 10:45

Norfolk - 2 hours from central London, miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches and country walks, a beautiful and old main city and often gets the best weather.

minnieok · 01/09/2020 10:45

@tabulahrasa

Wow, I want! Just sent it to dp and said change of plan I want to run a b&b but he doesn't agree so its back to the sensible townhouse and sensible job

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 10:45

@tabulahrasa that is amazing and special !! Not sure I'm ready for that much non estate though 😬😂

This place, it’s been run as an indie school but perfect for converting back

Pfft, I wasn’t going to let other people stay in it... just because it used to be a b&b... you know, in my imagination where I can afford it, lol

I was just going to wander in wellies, collecting dogs and maybe pet sheep?...

Oh, sod off. Are you jealous? Why should OP have to apologise for being able to afford a £700k house? Unless she has had a lottery win or an inheritance I’m guessing she has worked for her money.

Come to Worcestershire OP. Or Warwickshire, that’s lovely too.

tabulahrasa · 01/09/2020 11:02

Anyway... being serious, most of Scotland...

you’d not get anything amazing in a city centre for that much, but you’d get the right size and you get pretty damn nice by the time you’re into outskirts and fairly easy commutes...

And of course, go outside that and it’s mansions, rofl...

But there’s all sorts of in betweens too...

We’re just in the middle of buying a 4 bed semi, older property, character features, rural views but only a mile from a town and a very easy commute to Edinburgh for my work - £270k

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 11:04

No inheritance ever and no lottery win .. just old fashioned hard work and working up the ladder . It's not even that much in the south !!!

More likely benefited from far higher percentage increases in London/SE property prices than the rest of the country over the past few years.

Eg Small house or flat in London some years ago, was £50k now £750k, similar house in northern England was £20k, now £150k. OP sells £750k London property which is mortgage free or just about and has £700k to buy a very nice house outright in cheaper part of the country.

Ormally · 01/09/2020 11:07

Faversham. Just seen one online that might put me in a grumpy mood for the rest of the day as we'd rather like to look into that area.

Newsflash: lots of people (not just on Mumsnet) can afford a house worth that much money.

Stop with the competitive poverty. It's very tedious.

Pet8 · 01/09/2020 11:17

Wirral, Liverpool, Manchester, Cheshire, North Wales. Some beautiful places with beaches, countryside, motorways and airports in easy reach.

vapeinafleshlight · 01/09/2020 11:21

Need to know what you want really OP? Countryside? Coast? Cities?

That house in Buxton looks great......but, I could not live in Buxton. Ever. I find it seriously suffocating as a place. There is no logic to it, it's just how I feel when I'm there Blush

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 11:21

I don't live in London and aside from a jump of £150k equity in one house it's from working our way up the property ladder .. adding value etc.. not that I should have to justify it .. most of my friends have much more expensive houses because they have come from London 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 11:22

I wouldn't mind the coast but not a city as I like space and countyside . I would however want to be nearish a big town . I'm not ready for the good life just yet!

So for example this is near me and what I'd call special .
