We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

We all work hard. Doesnt mean its ok to moan about trying to find a house for nearly 3/4 of a million
Get a grip

The OP is not moaning, she's asking. Maybe do something about that chip on your shoulder. And grow up. That really isn't a huge amount of money for the south of England.

Sure, the OP could just look at a property site. Ad you could just look at another thread, if ones like this irk you so much.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/09/2020 12:42

Cornwall. You can have a sea view thrown in for that lots of areas.

reefedsail · 01/09/2020 12:44

Has anyone said Dorset? If not, the Dorset!

I keep looking at this place. Gorgeous views.

@Oblio

I always try to point this out on these threads but never get anywhere!

PickAChew · 01/09/2020 12:50

@Dontstepinthecowpat

I’m more surprised that someone who has ‘worked hard enough’ to have a £750k budget on a house wouldn’t be aware of housing markets and areas. Or be able to access that info without asking on mumsnet.
Rightmove doesn't give you the benefit of local knowledge, though. People on mumsnet have that and may surprise OP with an area they hadn't thought of.
gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 12:51

So many great links ..will look through them all now.

Or this one - fabulous location, and at o/o £370k, you could completely remodel it to your own taste:

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the Scottish Borders. Easy to get to the North of England the Midlands, an hour and a half from Edinburgh and the airport and the climate is much milder than the rest of Scotland. Low population and gorgeous countryside you have the right to roam, if you like outdoor pursuits.

reefedsail · 01/09/2020 12:56

Or this bad boy- but it looks like it might need attention!

Great for Bristol airport.

Atalune · 01/09/2020 12:57

Somerset I think is the place.

MsSquiz · 01/09/2020 12:58

In North East/Northumberland you would get the benefit of coastal and country, with towns and villages and Newcastle airport not hugely far away

Not normally a new build fan but this is lovely. Another agent that needs sacking for the lack of a floor plan, mind.

You can get a lovely house in Gloucestershire for that - 5 valleys area around Stroud is lovely, beautiful Cotswold villages without the tourists and lower house prices than better known areas. You wouldn't get an enormous house but definitely a good sized detached with a big garden

randomsabreuse · 01/09/2020 13:19

Scotland. Probably north of Stirling or in the borders.

These 3 are all nearish Stirling and accessible to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Closer in would be more of a "nice estate" and less space. Although there's some nice houses in North Lanarkshire too, close in to Glasgow but less good schools than neighbouring East Dunbartonshire...

Chicchicchicchiclana · 01/09/2020 13:25

Surely you can narrow it down a bit OP? You must have areas you really don't want to go to?

Do you have any friends you'd like to stay in touch with?

Where's your family?

When you say big, what do you mean by big?

In your position I would move to a small flat in central London btw!

ScorchioScorchio · 01/09/2020 14:04

Moffat in Dumfriesshire. A lovely little town just off of the M74/M6. An hour up the motorway to Glasgow, an hour across country to Edinburgh and 45 minutes down the motorway to Carlisle.
£600,000 would get you an enormous house - this one is offers over £310,000 and has five bedrooms (it's also on a very nice road).

@gubbbbbddaaaa
I suggested Buxton because

  • the properties are huge and cheap (as its got dire transport links)
  • it has an amazing community including many professionals who work like you
  • it has amazing scenery around the town
  • it has enough people that there are shops and restaurants and pubs and gyms
  • it is on the circuit for concerts and comedy and small bands

I guess the point is that you need to decide how big a town or city you want to live in and then start looking

gubbbbbddaaaa · 01/09/2020 15:05

A flat in London is my idea of hell .. I have 3 cats and would like a dog .. My family is here in the south but I jist was looking for ideas of nice areas that didn't have massive price tags .

CuriousaboutSamphire · 01/09/2020 15:17

Almost anywhere that is NotLondon, bits of Manchester and other expensive areas. Vast tracts of the UK as a whole are open to you - and indeed anyone woith half that much!

I offer you an entire forest full of houses, easy if a little distant travelling by rail, the M5 and M4, an hour from Bristol and 2 hours from Birmingham airports.

Big towns include cities of Bristol, Gloucester (maybe not), towns in the forest have all amenities, Monmouth is prettier.

fussychica · 01/09/2020 15:50

If you want to stay South much of Wiltshire, away from the M4 corridor, is good value for money. Not too far from Bristol airport. I've also lived in Derbyshire just outside the Peak Park. That makes it very affordable. East Mids or Manchester both doable.

thedaywewillremeber · 01/09/2020 15:53

Friend of mine has just got a lovely house in Yorkshire lots of land it’s beautiful there.
