We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

I live in Derbyshire and there are lots of gorgeous houses here for that price.

You could have a stone built cottage in the Peaks or a modern non estate detached in a suburb or village near the city.

It's good for transport and central, so near to your DD's uni choice (as long as that's not St Andrews). Long way from the coast tho.

You can get a lovely
Home pretty much anywhere for that budget surely? I live in an expensive town, but you go a few miles out and prices drop.

I would go for in or around Malton in North Yorkshire. Half an hour on the train to both York and the coast, town centre heaving with independent shops and cafes/bars/restaurants, a monthly food market and on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty.

It is an expensive part of Yorkshire - there’s always a lot of talk on here of getting a mansion on acres of land in Yorkshire for pennies - but you could get a lovely house in one of the villages for that budget.

Whenever North Yorkshire gets mentioned on here the default always seems to be the Harrogate area, but in my (completely unbiased of course Wink) option, east of York is far nicer.

A quick search pulled up these houses -

North Yorkshire, or Derbyshire/ peaks. Manchester and surrounding areas are much more expensive. I grew up in North Yorkshire, lived in Manchester for 12 years and am now in Sheffield. Norfolk is lovely too- we visit there once a year for a holiday but no idea on prices.

Moving to Scotland from England, if it involves needing to sell your house to help fund it, isn’t as straight forward as moving within England & Wales. It’s a whole different system that involves solicitors right from the making an offer stage.
Lancashire isn’t always as cheap as many believe, there are some expensive areas.

garlictwist · 01/09/2020 18:12

Everywhere except London, I'd say. That's a huge budget!

qwertypie · 01/09/2020 18:22

You could get a huge house on the west coast of Scotland.

Loads of places that's significantly more than most can afford. Feels kinda braggy as a thread.

In the Southwest, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, West Dorset.

That’s our price range and there are lots of lovely houses.

Unfortunately, at the moment, all the bloody Londoners are snatching them up about 2 days after they come on the market, so it’s a bit of a nightmare time to buy.

We had a beautiful house with barns and orchard and 7 acres for about that, but sadly, vendors became ill and had to pull out before exchange. And now we can’t even get a damn viewing before an offer is accepted.

We put an offer in on a house a couple weeks ago, was only on the market 10 days before went to best and final offers, then last minute a planning issue came up that meant it wasn’t even mortgageable. Still went for at least 750k, which was 10% over guise price.

So Southwest but be ready to move fast, or wait a few months til everyone decides the really don’t want to leave London after all.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 01/09/2020 19:46

Another vote for South West.

NoRoomInBed · 01/09/2020 19:59

Have you thought about the highlands?

Don't be daft. Just because some people can't afford the same house doesn't mean the OP can't post looking for advice.
Girlyracer · 01/09/2020 20:09

North Yorkshire definitely.

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2020 20:19

Holmfirth, 5 beds, land and about 45-60 mins to Manchester airport.

Horehound · 01/09/2020 20:22

Scotland. Easy. Look up savills

Strange comment. People cannot pull out right at the last minute in Scotland. Like you can in England...
Tiggles · 01/09/2020 20:57

North East Wales (but close to Chester)

I just can't understand the appeal of the far South West. It's so cut off from the rest of the country and rammed with tourists and "grockles" most of the time. Everyone who lives there seems to resent outsiders.

Move to a place where you think you'll fit in, op, is my best advice. My inlaws live in a large but quite rural village. Lots of tied cottages from the nearby country Estate and then more modern bungalows and average sort of houses. I'm guessing the average house price is about £200,000 to £300,000. But there's one very expensive house in the village (former Manor House) period property with carriage drive, outbuildings and sizeable gardens. It's probably worth about £650,000. It was bought buy a family from London, the husband works mainly from home for a city firm but commutes in occasionally.

Guess who the most hated people in the village are? Grin

Neston, Cheshire. Bottom end of the Wirral. Close to Liverpool and Chester. 40 mins to both Liverpool and Manchester airport. Easy access to North Wales. Friendly people.

That said, if I had your budget I’d move to the Yorkshire Dales.
