We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

Gloucestershire... especially the 'other' side of the Severn.

I've heard (on here) that Norfolk is really unfriendly to outsiders, but I have absolutely no idea if that's true!

We're in Plymouth and just bought a large 4 bed character property with large garden for £500k in the city, but not an estate. You'd get something fab for that budget in the city and also surrounding areas.

Lincolnshire
Lancashire - possibly ribble valkey if you dont want a lot of bedrooms
Scottish borders

Pretty much anywhere in Scotland. You'd get a very nice house in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Rurally you'd something very big and lovely. In fact you'd struggle to spend that on just a house in the area I'm in. It would certainly come with a fair bit of land for that budget. Or you could but a plot and build something.... Possibilities are endless!

I was going to say Shropshire, surprised nobody has mentioned it already

Some rural areas struggle more than others with mobile connectivity and broadband reliability. Something to double check if you need to wfh.
With your budget you can find what you are looking for anywhere north of Herts or into the west. It's a good budget for anywhere but the SE and London.

justanotherneighinparadise · 01/09/2020 09:49

Suffolk/Norfolk.

This one needs some updating, but huge upside is train station to London for nights out! 😁

I agree some areas of Scotland are affordable and have good detached housing stock that can be quite special but that does not include Edinburgh. For example, this is in budget in an area to the outskirts, it's perfectly nice but not sure I'd move to the other end of the country for it...
