We want to love when dd goes to uni and are currently in the south. I'd love a big ish detached house with a big garden and off an estate for £650-700k .. any ideas on areas that are nice ?
Jobs are irrelevant as DH works from home and only needs to get to an airport a few times a year .

Lincolnshire & East Yorks. Humberside Airport has 3 daily flights to Schipol (well pre covid it did anyway).
750+ 4 bed detached properties come up on rightmove within a 40 mile radius of the airport in the £400k-£700k price bracket.

PutBabyInTheCorner · 01/09/2020 22:47

Urghh. You have the 'smallest, cheapest house' in your circles?!
That's a huge budget and way off what most people could ever afford. I do live in the north though.

This is in a stunning village and close to the m4 and Cardiff it's 150k under budget but that will help renovating

Angliski · 01/09/2020 23:25

Shropshire, Liverpool - Sefton Park is lovely. Glasgow and surrounds.

Half hour and you’re in Manchester, loads of lovely scenery very close by but not particularly rural.

Friends house has gone to sealed bids in Somerset. They are being snapped up round here.

Bear in mind the weather differences between the north and south, if you move north, especially the north east or Scotland, there will be a marked difference in how much sun you are used to. I know someone who moved from Northumberland as, although beautiful, the constant cold and damp, even in the summer, was too depressing. In the north east, the air mass is influenced by very cold winds from the Arctic. Definitely something to be mindful of.

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 02/09/2020 10:44

Shropshire. Best county ever. Countryside and lots of little villages but near bigger towns like Telford and Shrewsbury. An hour or so travel to Birmingham airport by car or train.

That's somewhat of an exaggeration! We've had plenty of hot sunny weather in the north this year, not as much as the south obviously, but all of April and May was wall to wall hot sunshine and while there's been some wet days since then, there's also been some nice weather and a lot of people think London is too hot in the summer anyway.

Plus with the prevailing winds coming from the west, the influence of the arctic weather from the east is very much a minority of the weather on the east coast.

Are you open to moving to Scotland? You can get a lovely house with good gardens for that price.

Look at locations on the west coast if you want to live by the seaside such as Troon, Ayr, Skelmorlie, Largs - all within 40 minutes to Glasgow Airport.

Kilmacolm and Bridge of Weir is absolutely beautiful too (not seaside, more rural)

Or if you prefer the east coast look at places around St Andrews, Fife, Anstruther with links to Edinburgh Airport.

MargaretHooper · 02/09/2020 14:05

How about this, newly on the market, in Perthshire. Beautiful location, 5 bedroomed former manse (like a vicarage) with 1.27 acres and a jetty onto the river for boating and fishing, all for offers over £625k: www.galbraithgroup.com/property/per140260-logierait-house-logierait-pitlochry-perthshire-ph9-0lh

Woah - so much vitriol! MN is anonymous so bragging would be a bit weird - nobody knows who the OP is.

If people never moved up the housing ladder, there would be no cheap starter homes to buy. The OP clearly put her budget in the thread title, if it's not for you, just scroll on by.

There's always someone better off than you and there's always someone worse off than you. People can discuss what they want that's relevant to them and shouldn't feel ashamed to do so.

I'd be interested to know what people who have an issue with this thread deem an appropriate threshold for discussion. £200K? £400K? Or maybe, because some people can't own houses at all, purchasing houses should never be discussed. Where does it end? Just live and let live.

KenAdams · 02/09/2020 14:24

As an aside OP, I'd like the Peak District but I've read on threads here before that some areas of it aren't as nice as others, but you'd need the views of someone more local to that area for further info.

@gubbbbbddaaaa lots of people have posted Scottish links.

the house buying system is different up here. Prices are usually given as offers over (there is the odd fixed price).

Offers over vary between areas but around 10 -20 % extra is usual in Edinburgh. (I sold my last property in Edinburgh City Centre for 17% over. Friends have just lost out on a house despite offering 30% over!!).

Offers are made via a solicitor and they can advise you what is normal locally as it does vary by area.

So the house that are being shared o/o £625k will in all likelihood sell for around £700k.

Also be aware land tax (stamp duty equivalent) is more expensive for higher value house in Scotland and some council tax is much more expensive (I pay around half the council tax in London that I used to pay in Edinburgh).

BarbaraofSeville · 02/09/2020 15:09

Income tax is also different and slightly higher in Scotland for higher earners.

But if you have school age DC, you probably want to look into the rules regarding university tuition fees, which I believe are free in Scotland but there's got to be rules around residency for non Scots.

I think it's London council tax that's cheaper, not Scottish that's expensive. Having just googled, Edinburgh and Glasgow CT is less than what I pay in Leeds and includes water charges.
Or this one - fabulous location, and at o/o £370k, you could completely remodel it to your own taste:

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-72796156.html
You would have to do such a makeover! EPC rating G! Even the estate agent describes it as 'Creative enhancements'. Such a great location if you were brave enough it would be amazing but it is almost a collection on breeze block additions stuck together. Definitely an interesting find ! I keep looking at the photos and I'm not even looking for a house Smile

dazzlingdeborahrose · 02/09/2020 17:49

Re Northumberland - it's a huge county and much of it is pretty rural with poor roads, transport, wifi, mobile coverage. The two posted earlier were the arse end of nowhere. If you want to run a b&b it would be good if the guests could find you. So do your research carefully. It is stunningly beautiful though.
