Hasn't he spent Christmas in Hospital before?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 20/12/2019 15:55

Hope he's ok and makes a quick recovery.

MrsFogi · 20/12/2019 15:55

He seems to make a habit of checking into hospital to avoid the family Christmas!

Think the article says he was there at Christmas a few years back.

Oh bless. Well he is 98 so something will happen sooner or later. However he may only be in hospital a couple of days if he responds to treatment. It would be sad for his family to lose him at this time of year.

Fucck · 20/12/2019 16:01

It says he walked in and it is routine, but i suppose if it is more serious they may try to play it down 🤷🏼‍♀️
They're both in their 90s, DoE is 98. A simple virus or knock could kill them at that age, unfortunately.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 20/12/2019 16:01

Why- if it was planned- has the Queen gone to Sandringham?

Why has he had to travel to a London hospital?

Not really adding up...

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 20/12/2019 16:04

Also why is there a need for an announcement?

JumpyLiz · 20/12/2019 16:06

The cynic in me suspects it’s a way to not have a Queen's Speech on Xmas day this year.

HoHoHoik · 20/12/2019 16:12

The Queens speech on Christmas Day is pre-recorded well in advance, it will have already been done by now.

HRH2020 · 20/12/2019 16:13

I also thought it odd that he left when the queen showed up in Norfolk - probably took one look at him and packed him off to hospital

Bluerussian · 20/12/2019 16:13

I hope you're wrong about that, JumpyLiz. I expected the speech is already recorded. If the Duke pops his clogs they may not broadcast, however I think he'll be out of hospital for Christmas.

It's not that long a drive from Sandringham to London and he favours the King Edward Vll hospital as do many ex officers. If it had been a dire emergency he would obviously have been taken to hospital near where he was staying, probably the Norwich and Norfolk. That in itself is a good sign but you never know at 98.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 20/12/2019 16:18

If he’s going to be in hospital over Christmas, I bet the consultant on call on Christmas Day will not be amused. Grin Depending on the speciality, they’d often be on call from home and not have to go in but would have to if HRH was a patient!

MakeMineALargeProsecco · 20/12/2019 16:19

Apparently he's not been seen in public since May.

I suspect he has many chronic conditions at his age.

SamanthaBrique · 20/12/2019 16:23

Yes he has been, he attended some event with the Queen in the summer near Balmoral and looked healthier than any man his age has a right to be!

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 16:25

Why- if it was planned- has the Queen gone to Sandringham?

Tradition, innit. She's a great one for sticking to tradition and the stiff upper lip. After all, she can get to the hospital pretty quickly if she needs to.

Why has he had to travel to a London hospital?

They always go to that hospital, don't they, unless it's an emergency? I assume there are benefits around the fact that the hospital is used to the security and other protocols involved and has experience in fending off reporters.

CoolCarrie · 20/12/2019 16:27

He probably wants to avoid Andrew!

JumpyLiz · 20/12/2019 16:28

I know the speech is pre-recorded, I'm thinking it's an excuse not to broadcast it.

TheQueensChristmasSpeech · 20/12/2019 16:30

@JumpyLiz The Queen's speech has to happen....it's tradition...oh dear 😢

KitNCaboodle · 20/12/2019 16:33

There have been rumours circulating for about a year now about him having prostrate cancer. His ‘hip operation’ was in relation to that.

PineappleDanish · 20/12/2019 16:33

Also why is there a need for an announcement

To stop leaks and rampant speculation. Although he's not in the public eye, the staff at Sandringham would obviously be expecting him at Christmas. He doesn't turn up, someone at the station notices his absence, or a member of the public, Tweets that the D of E isn't there, rumours start to circulate.

Far easier to make a statement.

JumpyLiz · 20/12/2019 16:36

It's been another Annus Horribilis (or whatever the hell it was called 😂), I just think this time it might be a tad too horrible. Not easy to reference all the crap, but even worse not to.

Hey ho, like I said, cynic.

PlomBear · 20/12/2019 16:38

He is 98 years old. He’s had a good innings and a privileged life. It’s sad for his family.

PolaDeVeboise · 20/12/2019 16:40

I have friends who work at the Beeb who are having an unusually hectic day for this time of year. Make of that what you will.

BrassicaBabe · 20/12/2019 16:41

I hope he is well. I might pinch his idea of buggering off to a catered hospital bed to avoid Christmas shit though Grin
